Penski Files

To be repetitive – it was another Wednesday at O’Briens, as usual not a lot of people but some good music. The Penske Files (funny name see - def. in Urban Dictionary) are from Canada. They put out an immediately appealing rush of pop punk. The singer had a harmonica brace a la Dylan which is odd in this context but did add a different sound into the mix. They were overflowing with energy. The small stage seemed like it barely could contain them.

I feel for these touring groups playing for small crowds as far as money and attention goes. They put in a lot of time, money and effort and someone like me gets to hear some worthy rock mid-week and I appreciate that. Check out their Bandcamp page

Joanie Lindstrom played "Gunslinger" by The Digs this last week and I loved the vocal in it and added it to our Top Ten Songs list. They were at Great Scotts on the bill for the When Particles Collide CD release show so I headed out.

I saw The Digs at Club Bohemia before their Rumble appearance this year. The performance at Great Scotts was similar to that but much tighter in the segues and amped up a bit more. That produced an attention getting wave of rock that won over the crowd immediately. They never dropped the momentum for the whole set.

The songs are somewhat riff based but always develop into something more complicated and the melody lines are strong. "Gunslinger" was a favorite live also. Another song I loved last time called "Laces" was again a highlight. Andrew Dedousis (ex Drunk Nuns) is a chameleon on bass. He plays whatever the song needs at the moment. He’ll sit on the tonic, play a figured line, play a melodic line or rattle the strings - whatever. He rewards close listening.

These guys are just starting and it'll be interesting to see them develop. Check out their Band webpage
