With Thanksgiving in the works we didn’t make it out till Saturday this week. O’Brien’s had a bill of hard rocking bands that drew about 40 people.
We caught Hamhocker from Boston. They were riff based metal. Most of the time all three were pounding the same figure, “Old Phone” on their Bandcamp page shows this style. It all got our head shaking. The guitarist had a fantastic slide sound. You can hear it at the beginning of “Where’s the Money” They had some self-depreciating humor in between songs that was amusing.
The 007 Hundred Club played a few years ago under that name and eventually became The Black Cheers. Dan O’Halloran who played guitar and sang in The Black Cheers, was on drums in this group and Chris Brat was on bass. They also had two members of Darkbuster in the band. They played some fast punk. This was just what we wanted to hear. They drilled down into the music and had the conviction to make it all matter. Dan on drums was hitting every accent with staccato slams. Our ears kept going back to him. He was doing a lot. They covered “Mystery” by the Wipers. It’s been a while since we’ve heard anyone cover Wiper. Very cool. We need more music like this. They should play out more. Again anything with Chris Brat in it will be something to seek out.
And in other news ..... The highlight of the last few Little Steven’s Underground Garage shows lately has been “Can’t Go Back" by Kurt Baker Combo. It’s primo Baker stuff. Stop Calling Me Frank is having their yearly Christmas show at the Midway on Dec 13. The cool think about SCMF is that they don’t just cover Christmas songs, they actually have a whole bunch of original Christmas songs. Like Santa Buy Me A Beer Hopefully they will all end up recorded at some point. The Midway Christmas show includes: Dirty Truckers (new album soon) , Ex-Avenue , The Grommets (old school punk). of great shows) is going to start a new club on at The Norwood Space
Center with the start up date around the new year. Based on past experience
