Nervous Eaters at the Burren

Both our roving reporters John Keegan and Captain Easychord, went to the Nervous Eaters, Girl With a Hawk gig at The Burren a couple of weeks ago. They worked together to bring us pics and words for the well anticipated show.

Nervous Eaters

Hey what's this??? Spin did a Day in the Life profile of Carissa Johnson. The BGN had very popular A Day in the Life photo essay page. Here's one page of a few: Oedipus, Johnny Angel, Jimmy Dufour and Frank Rowe. Different from ours, Spin has a a music video and a short "Day in the Life" vid but mainly has 20 leading questions for Carissa.

There’s one line that might catch your attention when she says, “I think my desire to leave my hometown has brought inspiration, too “ It leaked out on Skybar’s Facebook page that Carissa is thinking of relocating to Brooklyn. There’s a lot of attention on Brooklyn groups, so that does make sense for her career.

The Spin article is here

HAWC The 6th Annual Rock for HAWC is happening in Salem March 18th & 19th in Salem. And it's a good cause!! HAWC (Healing Abuse Working for Change) is a non-profit that works with domestic violence survivors.

Night 1 is at Koto with Muck and the Mires, SkyTigers, The Downhauls, Wired for Sound and Carissa Angelo and hosted by none other than Marianne Toilet.

Night 1 is at OPUS with Bad Larrys, The Devils Twins, Radio Compass, Coffin Salesman, Salem Wolves and is Hosted by Angela Lee & Friends
Here 's The Facebook event page

So Blondie and The Damned are touring together and people are going crazy for it. They do Europe first with Against The Odds then come to the US in August. The second stop on the tour is the Boston Leaders Bank Pavilion for August 14. Boston tickets are here and more tour dates here

Manray In one way it’s another night out for the Manray crowd: The Cambridge Public Library’s "Cambridge Room Lecture Series: Central to It All: A Look at Central Square, the Nightclub ManRay, and Twenty Years of Change." John Driscoll, author of We Are But Your Children will be there along with a “rich panel of speakers”, for a look into Central Square during the years of ManRay’s existence. They'll explore the years of 1983 to 2006 and witness the growth and dynamic change within the square, through the lens of ManRay and its twenty years at 21 Brookline St.

It’s happening Wednesday, April 27 from 7 to 8:30pm. Registration is required and there are 72 seats available. Registration and some info on the Cambridge Library website.

VIDEOS......

B;acl Helicopter

A cover of “World” by the Bee Gees is definitely not something you'd expect from Black Helicopter. But it was part of an invite from Pipeline host Jeff Breeze before he passed away.

In some ways the performance seems straight forward. The melody and song structure are intact, it’s the sonority of the Black Helicopter sound that transforms it.

There ‘s a little about the song here on the If Its Too Loud website.

Billy Shang Hi Los

The Shang Hi Los have another attention getter with “Billy”. It's kind of like a song in an old spaghetti western. It harkens back to a time when a “Ringo” (1964 hit by Lorne Greene. Video here.) would crop up the hit parade. It's great hearing Dan Kopko have fun with the guitar licks and he rises to the occasion here.

Since people were telling the band the song sounded like a song from a Tarantino Soundtrack…they went along with that idea for the video.

Pixies

“Human Crime”, the new Pixies song/video captures some of the old Pixies magic. If this return to form carries over to an upcoming album, that would be something to hear.

The Pixies will be touring though the summer. You can find the dates in this Brooklyn Vegan article.

RADIO......

On Friday’s Late Risers Club Mook played all Ukrainian punk songs for the whole show. He went to Bandcamp and searched for Ukrainian groups. The result was a very good punk show that is worth checking out.

He played a song from a Screeching Weasels Tribute album from the label The Baseball Bats. Check that out here. Looking at that we see the Baseball Bats have a whole bunch of tribute albums. Like Black Sabbath , Nirvana , Mr T. Experience and The Queers.

You can access the show on the WMBR archive page

There were also songs like “She’s the One” by The Drops that had echoes of Green Day.

There were all types of punk styles that were indistinguishable from domestic punk as you would guess. Like the song “3ro” from Kat.

More WMBR news. Sue Safton celebrated her 39th Anniversary doing Aural Fixation. We’ll do the math for you…she started the show in 1983 (on March 3). She took the opportunity to play some of her faves through the years: X Ray Spex, Cynics, Le Peste, Pylon, Kinski, Flaming Lips, The Chesterfield Kings etc.

You can get to the show on the WMBR site here.

PODCASTS.........

Blowing Smoke With Twisted Rico get Joe Milligan on the show to discuss his book Let’s Go! Benjamin Orr And The Cars. This is a chance to hear about Ben’s after Cars career. It’s so sad that Ben died when he was 53.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Magic Shoppe’s new album Mono Lake comes in orange vinyl, the same shade as its cover. The album hits with heavy reverb and distortion and stays there. They don’t use the word psych on their Bandcamp page but it all seems very trippy. If you're listening you are in their world. This is not retro music either; it has a newness to it.

Every song is dense without any sharp sounds. You feel like you are getting drawn in…and down. That’s the case with the song “Paranormal”…give that a listen.

Linnea’s Garden’s new song is “Cut & Paste” (that’s how we did the BGN at the beginning, back in the 70s). It's about how a love affair screws you up because, as she quotes, “half of every relationship is in my head” .

There’s a paragraph on the song and its style on the Bandcamp page. It also has a video on the page.

The Dirty Truckers have two songs out that are the leading edge of an upcoming album release.

All the best Dirty Truckers material has a mood of being late night at the bar. “I Feel Nothing” has that magic. It’s all in Tom Baker's voice. It’s a gift. Listen to how he pronounces ‘realize’ in this song. He owns that word.

As usual with the Truckers the songwriting and playing is quality.

Perennials

Rum Bar has reissued the album Tina and the Total Babes which originally came out in 2001.

There’s two song out now and the rest of the album later. You can see what attracted Rum Bar when you take a listen to “Why Do I Like You” as it slams out the power pop.

It looks like Rum Bar has also scooped up The Gypsy Moths. “Effortlessly” has the full band sound with horns that marks the group. They write rave up songs that make you hit ‘replay’ a few times. That’s what we did with this one.

Allston Pudding published an interview with Western Mass band Perennial. They call them genre-defying and we guess they are but they sound like an artist from Slovenly Records a lot of the time. They go to other places. The average song length is a minute and a half, which we love.

This should be an exciting band to see live. The article is here.

“Tooth Plus Claw” quotes T.S. Eliot with “this is the way the world ends. Not with a bang…”. That song gets very intense. We're directing you to that song.

Tijuana Sweetheart

Tijuana Sweetheart posted all their albums on Bandcamp for Bandcamp Friday last week. Reviewing the albums we had another appreciation on how good they were. Every song has energy and attitude. All the tempo are brisk and the guitars licks sharp.

The occasional cover songs are surprising. Like “Always on My Mind” with some “Oi Oi Oi“ yells in it. “Angels of the Morning” survives with some dirty power chords and some raw phrasing here and there.

We like “Trash Candy”. It’s a good example of their upbeat attack and how they don’t take themselves too seriously. You feel like having fun is part of their mission.

and lastly ... You can preorder the new Baabes album in hot pink vinyl. There’s only 250 being pressed. It comes out April 22. You can order here
