You can’t say the artists are taking the closing of the Sound Museum lying down. Some very vocal artists and musicians were at City Hall on Tuesday March 11 giving city councilors an earful. WBUR had the story. There were two dozen speakers. “You won’t get rid of us. You may as well work with us.” Max Seltzer said plainly. We thought this statement by Elliott-Ortega said a lot: “We see time and time again that developers file their projects with no mention of what's being displaced, no acknowledgment of what is on site and what that site means to people.” That’s a great example of how the process ignores the community. Duncan Wilder Johnson spoke. Dave Tree ... well, try to stop him from speaking ... said: “Everyone in this room loves this city. Now, they want the city to love them back. You take away our practice space rooms, our rooms that we make art in – it’s gone, gone. No culture, no songs, nothing. Cultural wasteland.” Read the article on the WBUR website Please visit SAVE THE SOUND MUSEUM for info on what's been happening and they explain how they were "scammed by the city of Boston and ArtStaysHere" AND please SIGN THE PETITION!!
John Keegan was at the I Am Not Gone / Asa Brebner Memorial this past week. He talks about the "vibe" at the show and who performed, and has a slide show of photos for you to check out! Jonathan Richman had a tour scheduled for the Pacific Northwest in March but he cancelled the tour until June because of the extreme weather happening in the area. Meanwhile, Jonathan has a new EP on Bandcamp! If you haven’t been following him you might be surprised to find out that the songs have an Arabic influence. The EP is titled Yatasamaroun an Arabic word meaning “lovers talking softly together in the moonlight.” In the end you still get the Jonathan feel no matter how musically afield he goes. That’s true with “I’m In a Dancing Mood” by reggae artist Delroy Wilson. It sounds like a song off of one of Jonathan’s early albums. You can see that Jonathan is searching and keeping himself creative. He continues to be innovative and unique.
Ralph Fatello (Vinny Band, Nor’easters and BGN button logo creator) got featured on the New Hampshire Chronicle TV show. The story is all about surfing in the New Hampshire winters, something Ralph is an expert on. The five and a half minute clip can be seen on the WMUR website. You get to see Ralph’s son Max in the feature too. Max is a surfer ... of course. Ralph has been doing his surf blog at www.ralphspic.com
for almost 20 years. On the blog he says: "Next year my Blog will be 20
years old, I plan on Walk away from it? We don’t think so!
In our ongoing series of Johnny D's Allston Closing Night ... we have this week Installment #SEVEN with The Unattached from Bob Martel (aka Bob Cellar) - Ten bands and Bill Tupper as MC....those were the days folks and these are never heard before audio recordings of Johnny D's closing night! Let this be a history of Boston punk for you if you were not there!! The seventh band: The Unattached (Jamie Sever (vocals), Simon Ritt (bass), Michael Zadroga (drums), Mark Frazier (guitar) - - Listen to it here. For some visuals here is the BGN photo coverage of Johnny D's closing night and the BGN coverage of the 2010 Johnny D's Reunion at Church. VIDEOS...... Miracle Blood have a new song and vid called “Pomeranian”. In an article on the Everything is Noise website they say it’s about wanting to jump species and become a pampered Pomeranian…but then they acknowledge that real life means doing “whatever pays the bills.” The song has the powerful vocals that are the calling card for this group. It’s hard to hear that throat shredding vocalization and not be moved. If you are a hardcore fan the NYHC Chronicles is a must. Drew Stone has it going on. This week Drew interviews movie maker Danny Garcia whose latest is Nightclubbing, the story of Max’s Kansas City. The Chronicles begins with a two and a half minute clip from the movie and even that is something you want to see. Garcia has also done films on Johnny Thunders, Clash, Sid Vicious, Brian Jones and Stiv Bators. The Dogmatics have a video from a 1985 show in Washington DC at the 9:30 Club. The song is “You Say.” This was done up by Rudy Childs who did the ’Dogumentary’ that’s at the Film Festivals now. Short clips of this performance are in the documentary but here you get the whole thing. Jeff Connolly with local back up musicians just finished a Lyres tour (March 12 is the last day) in Spain. There are videos of the Barcelona and Madrid shows on YouTube. It’s nice to see Jeff in action. Here is the Madrid vid - Check it out at the three minute mark – the song stops abruptly, then continues after 10 seconds. It’s a fake out – genius. See some more photos and a version of “Don’t Give It Up Now” on the Lyres Mania!! Facebook page Spain must be the place to be. Besides Jeff touring, Kurt Baker moved there, Kid Gulliver had a great time there .... and Brad Marino was in Lugo, Spain on Feb 24. Judging by the video, he drove the locals wild playing “The KKK Took My Baby Away”. Spain we salute you! Smitt. E. Smitty & the Fezztones have released a new video for “Rebel Rebel”. The Bowie original was released 50 years ago in February. The Fezztones version has been out for a while but is getting some notice again. It was played on the Rodney Bingenheimer Show and getting a lot of play as compiled by the Radio Indie Alliance chart. It got spotlighted on The Whole Kameese website The Fezztones’ version begins slowly, they make you wait for that classic riff. With Smitty you know the video graphics and editing are spot on. The graphics are mixed with a live performance at the Magic Room.
Rum Bar’s Streetwalkin’ Cheetahs have a vid for “Bad Vacation,” a song off their current album One More Drink. The guitars have a nice crunch in this tune. The video is an office situation. The band members are the creepy co-workers who drive out the secretary. Read some more about it on the New Noise magazine website RADIO...... This Tuesday (3/21) Skybar has Linda Viens of Girl With a Hawk on his WMFO Rising show. Linda and GWAH have been very busy these days. Skybar will also feature some new songs by State of the Union. Last Tuesday he played Hammered Saint's new song “Dirty Work”, that's another group that's been doing a lot of gigging and recording. It's a stomping group performance topped with Emily Doran’s vocals. We’re so glad to hear her again. Skybar has that single early. We don’t see it on any music platforms yet.
Listen on Tuesday at 8pm on WMFO at 93.5 fm or after go to the MFO archive page and hit Tuesday at 8pm then hit the archive button.
On this week’s Boston Emissions Anngelle Wood talked for a few minutes. The subject was the radio business. She said what we all know but it was still hard to hear. The things we loved about broadcast radio in its heyday are dead and gone. Anngelle says that neither she nor any DJ she knows can make much of a living at radio anymore. So we have what we have now…college radio holding down the fort, and a patchwork of podcasts and online radio shows that you search around for. Anngelle made the point that radio was the social media of its day and we miss having that too. You can hear her comments one hour into this week’s Boston Emissions.
Al Quint started his Sonic Overload podcast this week with some Minor Threat. It's the 40th anniversary of the Out of Step EP. It’s also the 40 anniversary of the Government Issue Boycott Stabb EP and the Necros Conquest for Death. Al's first set had songs from them too. He played the Soft Boys “I Wanna Destroy You” one of our faves. Robyn Hitchcock just turned 70 years old!
You can hear the whole show on the Sonic Overload web page NEW MUSIC/CDs...... The Downhauls just released a cover of “Hazy Shade of Winter.” It sounds like they had fun doing it too. This song will be on their next EP out in May. They nail all the elements, the guitar riff, the big drum sound, the close vocals. One difference is we notice is Ivahna Rock's bass playing. It’s more pronounced on their version and it’s better for it!! It’s hard not to like this. See them for their EP Release Party on May 19th at The Lizard Lounge (FB Page) Check out their website The Downhauls their Bandcamp page and their FB page and Michael Marotta's write up on Vanyaland.
We first heard of Goon Platoon from their connection with Shred City in Wilmington. They have a new album: Keep On Rotting In the Free World. In the group is Anal Cunt guitarist Mike Mahan, writer Nate Homan and former-Full Blown AIDS/Larry Lifeless Project drummer Josh Randall. They play some intense hardcore. A good example is “Five Percent Is Nothing” where they pack a lot into a minute and eleven seconds. They prove that’s all you need. Even with that they take it low for 20 seconds. The lyrics start with: “Why waste your vote/you’re party means nothing/it’s only five percent/five percent of nothing.” It powers up and super heats as they repeat “five percent of nothing.” You can just imagine that was said to someone and then, what’s the reply? There’s actually a lot to say if you dig into it. This got us thinking. “Jefferson Scud Missile” also is a standout. Angelle Wood played it this week on Boston Emissions. It has a nice guitar riff using open string pull offs that does a fast trade off with some hardcore blasts. Oh ya, that’s what we’re talking about!! It’s crazy raw with some refined bits, that is so satisfying. Then it ends with an audio clip of someone reciting T.S. Eliot’s’ Hollow Men. Guys, you're killing us! “Jefferson Scud Missile” is linked below to hear. We have “Five Percent of Nothing” on our Top Ten Songs
