The BGN News Archive

March 25, 2024

The newest dark dance craze from Screw Cart.

The Woggles new album Time Has Come   is out this week on March 31. We’ve heard a few promo cuts (“Flesh Hammer”, “Hole In My Heart”, “Mr. Last Chance” and “Nothing More To Say”) and they are boss.!! That Woggles sway   that is their signature thing. If you’ve ever seen them live you have been moved by that Woggles sway. The songs make you yearn for that live Woggles experience. You can pre-order the album on the Record Store Day site

Danny Hargrove, the bassist of the Joe Perry Project   died on March 14. A lot of us learnt about bassist Danny Hargrove from Mach   Bell’s diaries with the Joe Perry Project. You can see photos of Danny and read some memories on Mach Bell’s two facebook pages Rock Survival and Mach Bell

Speaking of Mach Bell...We are up to the fourth annual Cowboy   Awards. It’s full of the glitter, the pageantry and the   Bell! Our very own Captain Easychord won Rock Writer of the Year! Brian Young of Crash Course for the Ravers got close for interviewer of the year but alas the golden statue went to Joey Suto of Rock Show Critque   .

VIDEOS......

Shang Hi Los

The Shang Hi Los released the video for their song “Op-Operator.” They've gotten copious coverage with the song release and it seems like even more with the video. It makes us feel so good to see a talented group like this getting attention from all over. We think other groups should pay attention to the radio shows and podcasts and blogs where the Shang Hi Los are getting played and submit their own material in turn.

And the video is has the perfect location at Stereo Jack’s!!

This Town is a new 6-part BBC series that is set in the two-tone/ska scene of the early ’80s. It looks like gangs and a potential life of crime is going to be worked up for drama sake. The Two Tone music in the trailer sounds persuasive enough to check it out.

The Wikipedia entry says: "This Town tells the story of an extended family and four young people who are drawn into an explosive and iconic music scene. Set in a world of family ties, teenage kicks and the exhilarating music of a generation, This Town tells the story of a band’s formation against a backdrop of violence, capturing how creative genius can emerge from a time of madness"

The series will premiere on March 31 on the BBC. More about this on Brooklyn Vegan and on the BBC site

RADIO......

On Skybar's Rising show (WMFO 91.5 FM Tuesday 8pm) he will be interviewing Dan Kopko. Dan has a lot going on with the Shang Hi Los. There is the sinple "Op-Operator" and it's video. We assume this is the first material from an album, maybe he'll talk about that. He has his solo release too. Dan also sings a song on Sal Baglio's alien rock opera They Came To Rock.
If you miss the Tuesday broadcast you can hear the show on the WMFO Archives. To hear the show go to the WMFO schedule page. Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday, then hit the 'archive' button.

On Joanie Lindstrom’s Late Risers Club this week she played “Stay” by the UK band Fallen Leaves. It sounds like an early mod tune to us although the band doesn’t use that description on their Bandcamp page. It’s from their upcoming album Simple Songs for Complex People which is not posted yet on Bandcamp, at the moment   only this single is.

The other song on the single “Rosalina” sounds like an early garage tune. It sounds like the chord progression from "Little Latin Lupe Lu". These guys are good!!

We talked up the Coffin Pricks from Chicago. Joanie picked a song we didn’t mention and damn it was good, so here it is. The song is “Right Kind of Loot”.

To hear Joanie’s show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Monday 3/18.

It’s less than two weeks to The Rumble. In this week’s Boston Emissions Anngelle Wood revealed that Halfcocked will be the guest band for the finals. Halfcocked were around from 1997 to 2002.  To mark their return they've released two 2002 demos. They're two hard rockers. Anngelle played them both. We will give you “Into the Spotlight” to play/hear below.

Anngelle also played Stars Like Ours, Shang Hi Los, Canyons and Locusts and Taken By Vultures.

One song that stuck out because it was so different was “Cosmic Surfin’” by Fates of Furies. The group has members from several Boston bands. Some fuzz guitar outlines some singing in an eastern style that is dreamy and mood inducing. The other two songs on this EP show that this is their general sound. The only other band that comes close to this that we know is Sundrifter.

“Albatross” by locals Sorry, Ma is another song that got our attention. We checked out the band’s Bandcamp and found this song “Girl In A Band”. There is a satiric edge to the lyrics that makes it seem that they are maybe making fun of those that make so much of a ‘girl in a band’ like it’s so odd. We love the amped up guitar solo.

Hear the whole Boston Emissions show below.

PODCASTS.........

This week on Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico there were two podcasts. First was Carissa Johnson. Carissa grew up in Andover. Her father was in the group The Bones that existed from the late 80s to the early 90s that played the Rat and Channel.

Once Carissa had a car she was in Boston and the clubs all the time. She went from a fan of the Beatles to the Ramones. Carissa was in a group called Left   Hand Blue that was playing in clubs around 2014. They recorded five albums.

Steev does a good job showing how much Carissa has done in the last ten years. Not many have logged recordings and stage time at so early an age as Carissa. She explains how she writes through emotion. She talked about the boost she got from winning   the 1977 Rumble. There is a lot in this interview.

Then Steev interviewed Chris Pearson who was in Green Magnet School and is now in Spiller. We’ve featured them the last few weeks in the BGN.

Chris grew up in Harwich down the Cape. He went in to buy a Police album in   1979 but Cliff Hanger from the Freeze put the Ramones album on the counter and told Chris to buy it.

Green Magnet School got signed to Sub Pop but then didn’t get enough support to further their career. The group got together for the Bob Dubrow’s Pipeline anniversary shows in 2014.

In February of 2023 the band that became Spiller slowly formed. The band was mostly together by the time Chris was called in. They played a few shows included Denstock, Faces and the Midway. They have three shows coming up including Koto Salem on April 12, June 1st in Plymouth at the New World Tavern with the Wynotts and then a show later with Moving Targets. Get more info by scrolling down to the Gig Listings.

People are paying attention to Spiller!! See them early and get bragging rights.

Elastic Glam Breakfast show had a Threefer madness format   going on this week. That way we get three T. Rex songs. “Mad Donna” was a live cut that we never heard before. Then there was the great “Children of the Revolution.” This was a good fit to play three   Cockney Rebel songs in memory of Steve Harley who died last week.

It was also a good chance to hear a few from an Electric Glam standby Starbenders.   Then three by Roxy and David Bowie.

The You Don’t Know Mojack podcast discussed Roger Miller’s No Man album Whamon Express from 1990 on SST. The podcast is dedicated to reviewing all SST Record releases. Roger himself is not a big fan of this album which has preprogramed drums. The hosts go over the situation surrounding the album. Then talk about each track, while reading comments from Roger about the tracks. We think the analysis is very interesting and should trigger a listening to this album, which is what we are going to do.

They start talking about the No Man album about 30 minutes into the podcast.

Songs include a cover of Bowie’s “Man Who Sold The World.” The song “Red Ants” was the name of Roger’s first Boston group.

Rogers upcoming gigs are listed on his website

We just came across the podcast Punkcast it's It’s connected to the Punk Museum. The podcast is done by Jessica Schwartz, Associate Professor of Musicology at UCLA. So we expected it to have an intellectual edge to it ... and it does in the initial episode which we have below. Right now they have 39 episodes.

They have a Suzi Quatro episode And a Clem Burke interview

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

The Stroll was a harmless dance craze in the late fifties. The Screw Cart song “Stroll” is the HP Lovecraft version of that. The single cover illustrates the scenario that you envision when you hear the lyrics. The guitar screeches and the drums have a primitive air (there are congas and bongos in the mix). There’s always evil lurking in the Screw Cart world. That’s why we love them.

Listen to the uninhibited garage madness by Lysol at the beginning of the song “Sonic Thrill”. Lysol are from Seattle, WA. The other three songs from the Down the Steet EP are just as raucous and all under two minutes. Awesome.

Rum Bar released a 1977 album by The Hollywood Stars   and then a live album. Now, we have this single “Taxi Driver” that is newly recorded this year, which is 47 years after their last studio album. The stars are with the Hollywood Stars because glam is back with new bands jumping on the bandwagon again. “Taxi Driver” has the guitar hooks, sweet   vocals and the stomping beat of classic glam. What’s not to like? A full album will come this summer.
