Jordan
Jordan

Jordan Mooney (Pamela Rooke) was the face of punk in the 70's. Even if you didn’t know her name you would see her in so many photos through the years that you would recognize her. This past week Jordan died from cancer at the age of 66. Tribute abound!!

She was at all the Sex Pistol shows, she managed Adam and the Ants during their early days, she was in the movie Jubilee by Derek Jarman, she worked at Vivian Westwood's and Malcom McLaren's Sex boutique. Here she is in the movie on YouTube . Video below

Above right is a YouTube interview

Jordan (Pamela Rooke) is even depicted in the new Pistols series on Hulu! She would have to be!

Forty-five years later there is still a fascination with punk and especially London in those first years. There were a handful of people that would change the culture… Jordan was one of those people. Time hasn’t diminished their accomplishments. It wasn’t easy, they were met with violence, as we were in Boston. People don’t like it when the status quo gets upended.

Jordan said men didn’t know how to take her, they didn’t understand why she looked like she did. She said, “ I wanted to be a living piece of art”.

The story on Digital Spy and in the Gardian and her obituary in Vogue – she would have loved that!! And here's another great article on Jordan from the Guardian.

And speaking of the new Pistols series on Hulu!.....

Pistols Poster HULU showPistol, the FX/Hulu limited-series about the Sex Pistols based on Steve Jones' great autobio book Lonely Boy will premier on Hulu on May 31st!!

But ... the Official John Lydon posted this:

"We were originally led to believe “Pistol" was a Steve Jones story, not a Sex Pistols story. Going by the trailer it doesn't seem to be the case. John’s “likeness” is clearly being used to sell this series, a series he was not involved in, and was put together behind his back. Putting words in John's mouth and rewriting history. A middle class fantasy. Disney have stolen the past and created a fairytale, which bears little resemblance to the truth. It would be funny if it wasn't tragic."

And locally......

Congrats to locals Lady Pills for getting into the print issue of New Noise magazine!! It covers new and edgy rock. Lady Pills aka Ella Boissonnault was in the New What Next section. Ella has a talent that could lead anywhere!!

You can hear the latest album What I Want on Bandcamp.

Todd Bananas Also congratulations to Todd Purple for graduating from barber school!!...and he's got a gig doing it with Kevin Patey at Jack's Barber Shack in Manchester by the Sea!!! Come on boys get yer hair cut and those Covid beards trimmed!! Todd doesn't stop their either...he's got a Todd Bananas DJ gig April 27th at Notch Brewery Brighton Tap Room. Check gig listings below for links etc.

Once has got dates booked for their outside Boynton Yards gigs this summer: June 11 and 25, July 9 and 30, August 13 and 27 and September 10 and 17. More info later.

Also mark your calendars for the Henry M's Annual Dunes Tunes at White Crest Beach in Wellfleet. The date: Saturday June 25th.

We recently came across a interesting site that lists local punk shows from that last several years- Massachusetts Punk Flyers and check out the band Secret Miracle too.

In the "Seriously??? Why??" department: As the smaller clubs struggle to get back on their feet even there seems to be more and more large venues opening up! Ther newest, the MGM Music Hall will seat 5,000!!! Will you ever go there? Who knows ...its next to Fenway Park and is hooked up with Live Nation and Don Law who run Crossroads booking. That gives you an idea of what to expect. It opens on September 3. Here’s the article in Vanyaland

VIDEOS......

Wake Up Punks

Wake Up Punk is a new documentary from England that takes another look at the beginnings of punk. At its center is the story told by designer Vivienne Westwood and her two sons (by Malcolm McLaren.) Jordan, who died this week, is also featured in the film.

In the film "Westwood also charts the decline of punk through the music, politics and fashion that drove the movement to its eventual commercial demise, while the film addresses voter apathy, climate catastrophe and the rapidly evolving social context, as it calls for a resurrection of the energy of the “no future” generation."

And "It culminates in Joe Corré (another off spring of McLaren), burning an estimated £5M worth of punk memorabilia on the anniversary of the Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the UK” release." (Read more of this at Deadline.com)

Nigel Askew, the director says the film “was ignited because of the establishment’s misappropriation of Punk, a fightback from the heart of the movement… I thought I knew what Punk meant, the journey of making this film revealed to me a whole new insight to the movement, more complex than I could ever have imagined.”

Bands Beer and Banter

It was time to listen up, and drink up, with the new episode of Bands, Beer and Banter. Tim, Ron and Chris's beers of choice were: Brightside IPA from Longpine from Portland ME, G Fresh IPA Fort Hill Brewery, and ApuckaLips Wow from Berkshire Brewery from Deerfield MA.

The videos are: The Shang Hi-Los doing “Billy” – which is just made for a show like this, Linnea’s Garden latest “Cut & Paste” , Billy Dodge Moody “Wildlife”, Smitt E. Smitty and the Feztones scores with “Buzzkill Baby”, and “Arms on the Table” by Canyons and Locusts.

Born because of Covid the show lives on and we are glad about that. It’s just homemade low key local appreciation and done intelligently rather than Wayne’s World cheesy.

Willie Loco

There never seems to be enough Willie Loco these days. We were glad to run across this video from a Paris show in 2019. It’s Willie doing “Radio Heart”.

RADIO......

SkybarWe are very impressed with the new Michael Kane & the Morning Afters album Broke But Not Broken. Skybar is too. He’s going to play 5 songs from the album on his Rising show on WMFO this Tuesday 4/12 from 8 to 9pm. The rest of the show will be filled with local music too.

Ron on the Late Risers Club on Monday 4/4 did a show with lots of music from Scotland because Wednesday was National Tartan Day. There’s a ton of great punk on it, both new and old.

While listenign to Ron, we learned that Midge Ure of Ultravox was in a group before that called PVC2. Ron played PVC2's “Put You In The Picture". Here it is on YouTube.

Ron also played our longtime faves The Jolt with “You’re Cold”. Here it is on YouTube

WMBRHe ended with “Heartbreak Girl” by the Offhooks. It’s one of those new psych efforts that sound like it’s off a Nuggets compilation. The song is on YouTube

You can listen to the show on the WMBR Archive page

PODCASTS.........

Blowing Smoke With Twisted Rico interviews drummer Mike Piehl. Mike has played for a wide range of acts over time and he has stories that go with that. His latest effort was 2019 album by Reverse. Here’s their Bandcamp page There is a lot of drum appreciation talk that you usually don’t get.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Tina and the Total Babes Kane and the Morning Afters

One of the many things Rum Bar Records does is to release an old album that needs more attention. That’s the case with Tina and the Total Babes album She’s So Tuff, which originally came out in 2001.

It’s not just that it has a 90’s girl group lyric feeling but that it’s been refashioned via the early seventies pop group sound with a dash of punk sensibilities, that makes it so damn good! The guitar tones alone are Hall of Fame worthy. The singing brings every lyric to life.

The group is pumping in every song. The beginnings of the songs burst with energy. “Tragedy” brings the Shangri La’s sound back, seemingly effortlessly. “Tell That Girl To Shut Up” is the Holly and the Italians song. “She’s So Tuff” is an old cover by The Demons https://youtu.be/XbcRATEdQ9U .

Michael Kane & the Morning Afters have their new album Broke But Not Broken out now.

You always have to start with Kane’s voice. It’s got a world weary gritty tone. He could sing anything and it would have a certain gravitas to it. On the record they cover the old blues tune “Bring It on Home” and it sits equal beside any other version because of Kane's voice.

The lyrics of all the songs also share a outlook that life is hard, good luck is scarce and you have worry because, “it’s a long way down”. There’s no sunrise just ahead.

One bright spot occurs a few times – the radio. That’s the only salvation. The characters in the song don’t give up, they have resilience and determination.

But the album is not a downer. There is the Springsteen gloss to it all and that should bring more listeners. All the songs will sound great on the radio.

The album is on Bandcamp here. The Record Release Show is a Midway Matinee show (3-7PM) on April 30th with Michael Kane & The Morning Afters, Stray Bullets, Coffin Salesman, CE Skidmore!!

Here’s “Like John Wayne” which shows how Kane can summon up a scene and attitude.
