Steve Albini RIP
Steve Albini RIP

Steve Albini’s death this week was met with universal acknowledgment of the loss. There’s just no denying his talent/gift. It can be heard on everything he recorded. The albums In Utero by Nirvana and Sub Rosa by the Pixies quickly come to mind. When you look at his output you can’t just peg him as a simple rock/punk guy. Look at this article in Far Out magazine that gives their Top Ten produced Albini albums. You can see Albini’s wide reach here, something that many may not know of.

Let’s get local – Albini produced local band Sunshine Riot’s Bright Loud and Violent album that was released just a year ago. “Man on the TV” sounds like Nirvana. In “Room to Moan” the phrase “we don’t want to die alone” comes across as a real moment. The bands previous album Electrical Tape was also engineered by Albini.

Let’s get a little obscure - we saw a group Sex Snobs from Oklahoma at O’Brien’s in 2017 whose then current album Emotional Stuffing was engineered by Albini and is much worth listening too.

Steve was even interviewed by Lil Bub on the Lil Bub show. You can watch that here. The video below/left is Albini in his studio showing the tools of his trade. Some may think it’s a bit boring but it shows the flat-out real world he lived and worked in
The video to the botton/right is Steve talking in front of an audience for two hours. Both of these videos show Albini talking with substance.

We loved that he identified with the independent scene. MSN quotes him, ‘”That’s where I cut my teeth, in that independent scene full of punks and noise freaks and drag queens and experimental composers and jabbering street poets. You can thank punk rock for all of that.”

He wrote about the problem with the mainstream music business in 1993 on The Baffler. Probably every band should read that.
We get this far and we haven’t even mentioned his enormously influential groups Big Black and Shellac. Here’s a link to a bootleg of Big Blacks’ last live show in 1987. They do a cover of “The Model” by Kraftwerk in the set.

Many musicians have come forward to give tributes to Steve. There are two notables David Grohl and Jimmy Page in this article
If anything, Steve could be blunt and it was all to the service of cutting through the bullshit. That his life was cut at 61 by a heart attack is a tragedy. There would have been a lot of great records in the future.

Porchfest SomervilleThe Somerville Porchfest was on Saturday 5/11. Somerville started the whole porchfest phenomenon in 2011. It seemed like this was the year it grew up. It seemed like every street in the city was overflowing with music loving people. People who had been to other years remarked on the difference this year.

This was a visual proof that the arts are an economic engine - all those people ate and went to stores in those areas. Parking was just about impossible. We circled for a long time before we had to give up.

Dennis Thompson the drummer for the MC5 died this week. He was the last living member of that group and the only one to see the band get inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

It’s hard to grasp a thing like that!! It’s like all the original Ramones have gone also. We owe so much to these people that had the talent and the courage to do something at a time when it met resistance. It’s a lesson we should all hold and remember. Here's an article on MSN.

Deep Cuts The Boston Globe 5/8 had a piece on Deep Cuts in Medford. It’s been a year since the club has opened and it’s going very well. You can also go to the Deep Cuts Facebook page and click on the post there (there's a paywall, sorry!)

Jan Crocker who filmed some prime moments in Boston punk, which you can see on his site Kinodv, has moved to environmental issues in later years. He's has been involved with Climate Change documentation on Cape Cod. Check this link to see a film, directed by Jan, about the Cape Cod shoreline and how it’s changing already from a warming world.

VIDEOS......

Pat McGrath

Chronicle had a story on disinvesting yourself of records. We shudder to think of it! It was a well done segment. Pat McGrath of Looney Tunes was the main cog in the story. Barrence Whitfield was in there too as a vinyl buyer for the Record Exchange in Salem. Then there were the poor souls letting go of their whole collections. The horror!! ... the horror!!!

RADIO.....

WMFO will have a day of live music on Saturday June 1. They will have 10 bands playing one after the other. Happy Little Clouda and Sal Baglio will be two of the bands. WMFO is 91.5 FM. And them being a radio station have a radio promo for Live Day.

Upcoming on Skybar's Rising show on Tuesday's at 8pm on WMFO - The Wynotts will be interviewed on Mary 28. Bob Cenci says: "We were.. we weren't... we're back...stay tuned for an in person radio appearance on Skybar Rising WMFO on May 28th. live on the air songs, single releases, added tracks from the late 00s! "

On Monday’s Late Risers Club Ron played a rare (for him) indie rock song rather than all punk. “Merch Girl” by Fresh was a worthy spin. The lyrics tell the story of a woman who wants to be onstage and is pushed into being a ‘merch girl’.

Ron played a new one by The Darts from Phoenix. They played the Late Risers Club 45 anniversary (which was also the 60th Anniversary of WMBR). “Are You Down” shows them lurching the garage chord progressions like they own them. The new album is Boomerang.

To hear Ron’s show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Monday 5/6.

Joanie Lindstrom started her LRC show with “Who Is Innocent” by the Out. Wow, we used to go crazy for that song!!

Joanie played three songs by The Dicks to remember singer Gary Floyd who died this week. Story in the Austin Chronicle. Here is “Hate the Police” on Youtube

To hear Joanie’s show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Thursday 5/9.

PODCASTS.........

The Radio Warfare podcast began with The Wynotts doing “Hey, Sharon” and it sounded so good. Later it was some more Rum Bar Record action with “Rollers Show” by the Glimmer Stars. Then double Kopko action with “Skateaway” by Danny the K and “When the Party Ends” by Watts

Tim Livingston played “Merry Go Round” by the Replacements.... The Replacements always sound like the right thing to play. Then for something different listen to “Athens and Rome” by John E. Vistic (English). It takes its time to build and has a combo of acoustic guitar and kettle drums. The new Ian Hunter song “The 3rd Rail” has some tasty Jeff Beck guitar fills.

The Elastic Glam Breakfast Show starts with "Metal Guru" a fave. This week there's a long live Slade cut that shows you what they did live. There's always some we haven't heard before. This week it was Chicory Tip with "Good Grief Christina" which was terrific glam. Then it was Yungblud covering Kiss with "I Was Made For Lovin' You" and glamming it up a bit. That's on the movie soundtrack to The Fall Guy.

NEW MUSIC/CDs.....

J Prozac LP Color Killer

We’ve been waiting on Jay Prozac’s new album Obsession to be released. Now we have the second single titled “Lost” and we've jumped on that to hold us over.

For us, Jay just can’t go wrong ... He has the knack for writing punk songs, no doubt about that. “Lost” is another example where he is expanding his pure pop punk sensibilities.

The fill-in guitar lines are more melodic and less drilling here. The vocals sound bigger and have an expansive reaching higher quality to them. He does these things while still keeping his pop punk song tricks going. This bodes well for the album too.

We have it on our Top Ten Songs.

Oh, what do we have here? A 16 cut album by Killer Color! They've been doing video feeds of their practices all during the Covid years. They have also been out gigging this last year.

Now we have Home Schoolin' ... Overall the album shows them to be full of fire. They're putting some good punch and fast tempos in the songs that show their driving spirit. The lyrics are funny and they don’t mind getting rude to make a point.

There are some songs we've heard them play live on video streams and are glad they have them on the album - like “Nate Fuck Off” and “California, ” which was a single earlier.

When you compare the new version of “California" to the 2019 release you can immediately hear the difference in the voices. They sounded like children in 2019, not any more. They have transitioned and sound all the better for it too. The playing is sharper too.
You can get the vinyl album in five different colors too. Order on Bandcamp.

Hammered Saint song The Yum Yums are yummy

Hammered Saint’s new one is “City People.” There’s a narrative in the lyrics. Emily Doran gives it some drama with her singing style. There’s not a lot of groups that could get a vocal take like this one. Curt’s guitar intro is the coolest too!! This feels like it’s one song that’s been taken from a bigger project but we know it probably hasn’t.

Oh yes, a new album by The Yum Yums! This group from Norway comes into our purview because Rum Bar Records has them in their growing mountain of releases.

To write a perfect pop punk song is one thing, to write as many as you want at will is another level up. That’s where The Yum Yums operate. Right now there are seven songs out of seventeen released on Bandcamp. They are so good it’s scary.

Just stop and get in there and listen up.

Cull the Band ultra Bomb

You don’t think you are getting through a week without some Aussie sounds do you?

Here we have the new song by Cull the Band from Adelaide titled “I’ll Be Your Navigator”. This is a band at full tilt. There is some hard rock AC/DC style in their punk. We think we hear shades of the NY Dolls too.

Once we caught our breath after that song, we had to check out their last album Punk Traumatic Stress Disorder (2022). That’s another eleven songs all revved up in the same fashion. The song “Burn in Hell” is an undeniable raver but really they all are. Don’t you want to hear “I Live To Fuck You Up”?

Go to their Bandcamp page to hear the whole album

Greg Norton bassist of Husker Du has been in a new group called Ultrabomb for a few years. Greg was diagnosed with prostate cancer and the group was waylaid for a while. Now, there is a new album titled Dying to Smile on the way.

There's a prerelease single titled “Rage Bomb” that's out now. The song has a wall of heavily amped guitars sound, much worthy of a Husker Du veteran. It’s nice to see Greg back in action. Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico had an interview with Greg. recently.
