The BGN News Archive
The Billy Ruane movie Road To Ruane filled up the Somerville Theater. Billy’s legend is still growing!! Kenne Highland along with Gee Julie and Larry Newman have their song “Billy Ruane” up on YouTube now. And you'll also find Rest In Peace Billy Ruane a really nice photo montage. And if you weren't one of the sold out crowd at the film showing at The Somerville Theater here's the Road To Ruane trailer and check the BGN archive page for Miss Lyn's brief write up about the film. Then there's Varsity Drag's song “Billy Ruane.” It's on their For Crying Out Loud album in 2006. We loved hearing that song when we saw them live at TT the Bears or All Asia back then. There so many good lines in the song! Here’s some:
“You know the dance is never ending...
But the place just ain't the same without Billy Ruane
Keep it loud, keep it raw... It also mentions the Channel, TT the Bears, The Rat and Kenmore Square. The lyrics are on the Bandcamp page
DJ Peter Choyce had a heart attack and had open heart surgery this week. We found out from a FB post by Bob Dubrow. I know we have many FB friends in common, so with Peter Choyce's permission, I am letting you know that he suffered a severe heart attack, admitted himself last minute on Sunday to a Knoxville hospital, and had open heart surgery yesterday. He will be convalescing for a few months, but is already making some calls (weakly), so that bodes well. I got the OK for the sending of any cards to: Peter Choyce, 2222 McClelland St., Knoxville, TN 37921 Peter had decades of radio work from WZBC, WBCN, WMBR and WFNX. Always on the edge he was scooted from one station to another and has been in Facebook jail so often that he has new pages under different pseudonyms. That’s our sort of guy!
Hi Fi Way website has a short interview with Dave Vanian about the new tour with the early line up with Paul Gray and Rat Scabies. There are two good videos of “New Rose” and “Neat Neat Neat” also. VIDEOS...... There’s a new split EP from Trust Records called You Got Your Descendents In My Circle Jerks out with The Descendents playing some early Circle Jerks songs (“Red Tape,” “I Just Want Some Skank,” and “Beverly Hills”) and the Circle Jerks playing early Descendents songs (“Kabuki Girl” and “Hope.”). The EP which is only on vinyl is already sold out!! But they have a very cool ad for the EP that's worthy of a watch. The two groups did a tour in March/April but never played Boston. Here's an article about the EP in Sterogum ... and in Punk News Trust records also released SSD's Kids Will Have Their Say and How Much Art Can You Take? ..., there's lots of awesome stuff to be had on the website. We found the doc The Story of the Descendents from 2013 on YouTube. This version has Spanish subtitles. It’s well done. David Grohl is interviewed. See it above right. Mach Bell continues the music part of his career with a new song/video by the Mach Bell Experience. “Can’t We All Be Bad” is the musical question Mach poses. The sound is modern hard rock/metal and done well because Mach has ace players in the group. Mach gets a hook in the chorus. Mach also has his persona and production qualities that he brings to the game. The video has some of Mach’s humor in it too. He’s in stocks singing the chorus. Some of the live shots are from the Square Root in Roslindale. It seems like Lollapalooza has been around so long it’s hard to peg its start in 1991. The festival did things different than those before. Now there's LOLLA: The Story of Lollapalooza a three part series on Paramount TV starting on May 24 that tells the story of the festival. It started just to give a final good bye bow to Jane’s Addiction but turned out to be a permanent summer festival fixture. RADIO..... On this weeks Skybar on the Rising show on Tuesday
5/21 at 8pm on WMFO 91.5 will have Carissa Johnson.
She should have some interesting insights into working with the Nervous
Eaters by now. She will also talk about an upcoming Cure-Alls
album and she'll do some live songs. We always seek out Monday’s Late Risers Club for Ron Spangler’s punk music finds. Like this week where he played “Don’t Leave Me Now” by the Real Losers. It’s a bit of a messy noise fest but has a wonderful garage feel and we like a messy noise fest. The shocker this week was at the end of the show Ron divulged that he was leaving the Late Risers Club and this was his last show! He did a fast goodbye at the end of the show. He said there was some problems currently at the station and that accelerated his leaving. He wrote a few lines on the end of his TrackBlaster playlist: “I've played this a lot over the years, in the context of whether the Late Risers Club is still relevant. You, dear listeners, trend on the older side - averaging in the 50s. We love you, but if you're all we've got then this is just a big exercise in nostalgia, and that's not what LRC was ever meant to be. Younger listeners generally don't do radio or synchronous streaming. I tried to recruit younger LRC DJs. I failed. The kids don't want no rock and roll…I'm pushing 60, and I'm not going to be part of the problem. I'm out. Thanks for your support these past 10 years!” Ron’s replacement will be the recently retired and former LRC DJ David Greene. Ron’s bow out song was “The Kids Don’t Want No Rock
& Roll” by The Sharp Lads.
To hear Ron’s final show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Monday 5/13. On Friday’s Late Risers Club Mook did a big service to all by playing a whole show of Steve Albini productions. He lined them up in chronological order from the group Dark Arts in 1983 to The Breeders in 2008. He said he was going to play as many as he could till time ran out. 2008 is as far as he got. Some of the groups he played were Urge Overkill, Pixies, Slint, Screeching Weasel, Veruca Salt, The Jon Spencer Blues Experiment, The Stooges (“My Idea of Fun”) and more. We didn’t know Steve recorded Man or Astro Man? Look at the Albini discography on Wikipedia
To hear Mook’s show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Friday 5/17. PODCASTS....... This week Blowing Smoke interviewed Linda Viens of Girl With A Hawk this week. Linda came to Boston from Connecticut to go to Mass Art. She had a job at the Inn Square Men’s Bar (for 6 years) and she saw Robin Lane and the Chartbusters and seeing a female lead to a rock band inspired her to follow the lead. She talks about the Inn Square Men’s bar for a while. That was such an essential part of the early scene. Linda talks her friendship with Asa Brebner. Later Steev gets the conversation to the Backporch Carousel which was created during the Covid shutdown. Steev mentions that the project gave all the musicians a boost that has lasted till now. They talk about the transition from Linda’s previous group Kingdom of Love to Girl With A Hawk.
There’s a NEW Mungo Jerry song? That’s what Elastic Glam Breakfast Show played this week. “That Is Why” is the new song. Here’s it is on YouTube They played two Beck collaborations one with The Black Keys and one with Spanish indie band Hinds. Local cuts were by Girl With a Hawk and Jennifer Tefft and the Strange. Jennifer Teffts new album Strange Beginnings is up on Bandcamp The classic faves included NY Dolls, Suzi Quatro and VU doing “Pale Blue Eyes” which was a Patti Smith live cover favorite for years.
Elastic Glam is doing a "Elastic Glam 4th of July Best Glam Rock Tournament". It’s done in elimination bracket style and you can vote now. Al Quint also focused on Steve Albini this week. Al has the knowledge here so this is the show to go to for some Albini appreciation. Al started with a Big Black song and then played some whole sets of bands produced by Steve. That was followed by Jesus Lizard “Mouth Breather”(1991), a great recording job there. Albini recorded Cheap Trick. The group tried to re-record their first album that they thought was too slick sounding and got Steve to do some songs. Al played “Hello There”. Al ended with a set of seven Big Black songs, two Shellac tunes and one Rapeman. He also played some Jody Foster’s Army in tribute to Mike "Bam-Bam" Sversvold, the drummer who died this week. We loved hearing “Lights Out “ by the Angry Samoans and Teenage Head and 999. You can hear the whole show on the Sonic Overload web page NEW MUSIC/CDs...... Steve Albini died just as the latest Shellac album was to be released. That album was posted on Bandcamp on Friday. The Shellac sound is here; Bob Weston’s pronounced bass and Steve playing on the low strings with a very treble tone. The drums don’t snap, they pound, there’s a distinction there. We give you that last song “I Don’t Fear Hell” which is the longest. They use the time to good effect by letting the bass riff work dig into your mind. There’s not many lyrics but one good line sticks out, “If there’s a heaven I hope they are having fun, ‘cause if there’s a hell I’m gonna know everyone.”
The Hollywood Stars started in 1973 and are having their moment now. They had Kim Fowley’s help in 1973 now it’s Rum Bar Records that's giving them a push but it’s the group itself that deserves all the credit for coming up with some nice tunage. “Can’t Do It Right” is a charming rocker that’s right in the pocket. It’s just a few chords but they do the work. The guitar sounds are so satisfying. The arrangement is simple and effective. The lyrics are so relatable. We can hear ourselves singing the chorus when we flub something up…”can’t do it right”. This is the second single from Starstruck in what should be a dynamite album. We have the song on our Top Ten Songs
Condition Baker are a punk group from Holbrook, MA south of Boston. They’ve been together since at least 2018. Their new song “Sweet Nothings” clicks on all levels. The arrangement, the pacing, the band sound and the slightly emo vocals all are pitch perfect. The most important thing is that the emotional core of the lyrics coupled with the singing ring true. We have the song on our Top Ten Songs
The Chelsea Curve just came back from playing the Mod Mayday in the UK. Now Heavy Soul Records has an album with a neat collection of Mod groups that played the fest. Chelsea Curve aren’t in there but Sharp Class is, along with The Chords, The Purple Hearts, Secret Affair, Squire and Nine Below Zero. List of groups and songs on Discogs You can order the album at Heavy Soul Records website. The CD version will cost you $18.00. The Secret Affair’s “Walk Away” is on the album.
