The BGN News Archive
There plenty of shows out there, which is great ... but there is still Covid out there too. There was a rash of show cancelled lately. The Rockwell and a few others are back to proof of vax and masks on attendees. We know of many people who have gotten Covid and some definitely at gigs. All cases were on the mild side with no hospitalizations. Now we're hearing that people are getting it twice...ugh! it's not over folks. But ... check out our Gig Listings in the link above or scroll down, after the 'news' .... ...and speaking of shows our Captain Easychord went up to Lowell's Thirsty First for Gnarnia, Kid Gulliver, Baabes and The Only Things Friday May 6th. It was quite a show we hear!! Check it out in the link below. Red on Red is starting retail sales ... in record stores. First one is with Somerville Grooves. (Conveniently located in Union Square) Now, you can buy Red on Red products there!! Art rockers Native Tongue were the cool band on the scene for a few years. They now have a four song demo from 1981 on YouTube posted by "blackoperations". The sound will definitely take you back!! Link to Native Tongue demos Blackops has good taste! the playlist is well worth a look and listen!! Hometown legends The Dogmatics have a gig in Milwaukee on July 16 with Beebe Gallini and Fun Bois. We’ve been watching and listening as The Dogmatics write and release new material and grab more gigs than ever. That they're taking this road trip is another level we didn’t expect ... but maybe we should have. They are back in the game!! Milwaukee will get some Boston punk vibes both new and old with the likes of The Dogmatics' hit Drop That Needle The Somerville Rock + Roll Yard Sale returns on Sunday September 4th, Union Square Plaza in Somerville, MA. It will be filled with locally sourced indie vendors selling a fun mix of records, vintage + DIY handmade goods. admission is free. there will also be live music and an all-vinyl DJ to entertain you while you shop. So mark your calendars. John Peel’s records and memorabilia are goign up for auction on June 14th. It seems like selected items not his entire collection which must be massive. There are signed records by Nirvana and John Lennon, letter from David Bowie etc. This is probably the first auction and more may come later. The article about the auction is in the Guardian. The Police are re-releasing a concert film from 1982. The material comes from a world tour they did in 1980. Originally it was only available on Laserdisc. The film shows them in Mexico, Japan, Australia, Greece, Hong Kong, Egypt and India. In the article about this in Forbes Stewart Copeland talks about how the tour came about. He also talks about his current tour with Police Deranged for Orchestra where he plays new arrangements of Police songs with an full orchestra. VIDEOS...... Two Red on Red artists put out videos this week! Nightspell’s “Phonebooth” starts out with a low-fi recording sound but then the smooth close harmony vocals come in that bump up against that low-fi rawness. Those vocals and melody harken back to the sixties or even earlier like the Andrew Sisters. It’s a mind bender to hear them in a current effort with the modern backing. The guitar solo is doused in effects and is memorable. This song is cleverly written and well executed. The video looks retro. Most is shot at an abandoned motel. The phone in the video is decades old. There’s a drive in speaker shot against a car windshield , all multicolored from a mid-car wash wax job. See video above. The other Red on Red group is Canyons & Locuts, a drum/guitar duo. In “Trapped in the Rapture” they keep to just the two instruments, resisting the temptation to overdub. Both the song and the visuals are trippy. The more times you replay it, the more trippy it gets. The repeated reference to eyes and some of the images give us a Blade Runner vibe. See video above. Color Killer have a new album coming out in the near future. They have a live version of “Didn’t Make It” - one of the tunes they recorded during practice. . Razors in the Night and Tijuana Sweethearts have been
doing promo for their upcoming reunion show at Sonia on May 28th. This
is a video podcast called On the Nod with Dave Koop.
Troy gives a good rundown of Razors in the
Night history. He also tells why it all ended. The notable movie The Decline of Western Civilization Part I is on YouTube. Sometimes these movies are only posted for a short time. So get in there and see it if you haven’t yet. They also have Part II posted - and Part III from 1998 is in there too!! RADIO...... It’s always a chore to keep up with Rum Bar Records’ releases. This week you get help with Lou Mansdorf calling into Skybar’s Rising show on WMFO 91.5 FM on Tuesday at 8pm. Lou will talk about Diablogato’s Party on the Porch show coming up this weekend on May 28th. On Joanie Lindstrom’s Late Risers stint this week she did an interview with Razors in the Night and Tijuana Sweetheart on the occasion of their dual reunion show. They revealed that the reunion show will be videotaped by a professional company so there will be a good looking vid at some point. The interview starts around 35 minutes in. You can hear the show on the WMBR archive page
While your there you can check out the song “Payday” by Yard Act. They are an English group sounds like the art rock groups of days gone by. Here is their latest album on Spotify.
Another ear catching song Joanie played is “TCR” by Sleaford Mods. It’s mod and electronic ... what a weird combo. They played the Sinclair on Friday and it sold out. Joanie also played the punk version of “Time of the Season” by the Ergs that sounded good to us.
Angelle Wood on Boston Emissions did a five song set in remembrance of David Mirabella of The Rationales who passed away a few weeks ago. She also did a set for Mike Gill of the Damn Personals another loss for the Boston scene. Lots of other local music on the show too: Baabes, A Bunch of Jerks, Michael Kane and the Morning Afters and Black Helicopter. SO worth a listen!!
PODCASTS......... Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico has three guests in the studio for a Punk Round Table: Chris Doherty of Gang Green, Rev. Hank, and Keith Bennett. It’s a loose discussion. They talk about their first songs that got them into punk. Chris reveled that he tried to get some original Gang Green players together but said it wasn’t going to happen. He also said that they are still are making money from Jerry’s Kids Is This My World. He said the band just got $10,000 from Curtis at Tang. Chris talks about Eddie’s Saloon the animated film that has a Boston punk hardcore soundtrack. That project has fund raising campaign now on Indegogo
We found the podcast Born to Lose with a Brad Marino interview, from August of 2021 ... but it's new to us. We were interested in Brad’s early days. Brad’s first band was The Rydells, a Ramones sounding group. The Connection was his second band. He also talks about The New Trocaderos. We always wondered what the story of that was.
NEW MUSIC/CDs...... Paper Tigers released I Wish Someone Would Have Told Me This Sooner, a new five song EP out in time for their big Boston Calling gig. They released “A Portrait of a Scene” earlier. That was one hard hitting song. The rest of the EP is similar to that. The group has the ability to write lyrics that have emotional weight and they fashion music that is the same. In the end all these songs will hit you hard if you give them a close listen. There are so many moments that grab you like the chorus of “L’appel du Vide” with the lyrics, “You said you needed someone badly”. A lot of stuff sounds like fluff next to this music of consequence. This is a serious band we should all be paying attention to.
