Linnea Herzog
Linnea Herzog from video to "Choatic Bisexual Summer"

Linnea’s Garden has some big summer plans. They have a tour that starts right at home here at The Jungle on June 14 then goes to Rochester, Toledo, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, Chicago, Columbus, Reading and New York.

Choatic Bisexual Summer They also have a new song “Chaotic Bisexual Summer” ready to be released on June 14 also. You can preorder on Bandcamp

Linnea says the song is about coming out as bi to her parents 10 years ago and how her life experience has helped her since. These sorts of songs are needed since there's steady stream of negativity coming from predicable sources.

The lyrics are confident and joyful, as is the song. Linnea’s Garden can shoot for different genres but this is mostly an indie sound with a quote of disco in the middle. The upcoming video comes across as celebratory.

Sapling will release their new song “Eris Worship” with a video. This is their first new recordings since the album amor fati that wowed a lot of people, including us. “Eris Worship” has much of the elements of the album. There are a lot of allusions in the song    much of which come from the Tom Robbins book Jitterbug Perfume. The book can be seen in the video.

Sapling new song cover Ask About My Damn Band cover art

The song and video will be released on June 1 as part of the Ask Me About My Dumb Band project. There will be a show for that at the Midway at 3pm on June1. Sapling will be on first at 3:30. The Ask Me About My Dumb Band is put together by Dave from Jamaica Plain’s ska band Double Shot. The album is posted on Bandcamp now with just the Double Shot song free to play.

MSN had an article from Fan Sided titled Eight 1980s Garage Bands That Deserve More Attention. That got our attention!! On the list is the mighty Lyres. Also in there the Fuzztones, The Fleshtones, The Chesterfield Kings, Miracle Workers, The Tell-Tale Hearts, The Steppes and Tav Falco’s Panther Burns.

VIDEOS......

It's been so great seeing The Dogmatics: A Dogumentary doing its film festival rounds. We see that there's also Born Innocent, a Redd Kross documentary doing the same thing. Both docs should be in streaming services soon.

The Redd Kross film has a five minute extended trailer which we have above. Redd Kross is everybody’s favorite unheralded band. The story in Variety

Now Redd Kross has a video for “Born Innocent” with footage from the documentary, see that above to the right. The double album Born Innocent will be out June 28. The band is going on tour and will be at the Brighton Music Hall on July 27. Here’s a good article on the Broadway World website

Tree rock band

TREE has a new video/song. It’s titled “Happy”. OK, you know it’s not going to be ha ha happy that way .... it does have a sort of bounce to it at the beginning with a metal riff that rolls smoothly along. Then you hear the lyrics: “I’m happy. Why don’t you kill me, so I can die happy” which is sobering. Soon enough Dave Tree is singing “kill me” and the light touch is gone. Then it goes back and forth. We love this messing with your mind.

The video has someone being chased by their demons.

Their last song was “Cheat at Golf” so that’s two great songs in a row for the group.

NYHC hardcore video

The New York Hardcore Chronicles had Steve Hansgen of Minor Threat and Government Issue (and many other bands) as a guest. Steve is a DC guy as you would expect. He recalls the DC scene from the very beginning with the Slickee Boys and then the Bad Brains. Seeing early Minor Threat inspired him to get playing. When the Minor Threat guitar player left to go to school, Steve filled in. You learn a lot about the background of the band at the time of Out Of Step.

Upcoming shows for New York Hardcore Chronicles are Dave Smalley on June 30 and Springa on July 7.

RADIO......

Carissa Johnson was on Skybar’s Rising show this week. She talked about her new position as bass player for the Nervous Eaters. The way she tells it, it seems almost inevitable not the surprise it was for everybody else.

She also talks about the situation of her original group the Cure Alls. She has not one but two releases on top of her work with the Nervous Eaters.

To hear Skybar’s whole show go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.
We have the interview section below.

Joanie Lindstrom played Hand on Heart, the latest Cock Sparrer album on her Late Riser Club show on Thursday. This is Cock Sparrer’s eighth and final album…they say. Joanie played “Mind Your Own Business” and that’s the one we would pick too. That’s the one that has the sing along chorus. The group has some songs that are more emotional than usual like “I Belong To You.” It’s a nice piece of work for the group to end with.

On the Elastic Glam Breakfast Show we got our weekly glam fix with T Rex with ”Motivator”, Sweet “Action” and live Slade playing “Gudbuy T’ Jane”.
We got introduced to BZN from the Netherlands doing “Sweet Silver Anny.” They have a long history starting in 1971. Then it was a new Nashville glam group Royal Sugar playing “Animals” that caught our ear.

There’s still time to vote in the Elastic Glam Best Glam Rock Tournament for the top songs to be played on the July 4th weekend.

PODCASTS.........

Tom Baker is interviewed on Blowing Smoke this week. Steev made a good point – to sum up Baker’s recording career would take a big boxed set.

Baker grew up in Topsfield and attended Boston College. Tom listened to main stream rock on WCOZ. He got at guitar when he was about 13. His first band was the Rubberheads in High School. His later group, Smokeshop, played Johnny D’s in Allston and Channel afternoons. His next group Pouch had a few singles. Then more bands. Tom has been actively at it for decades. Then he started Dirty Truckers and Tom Baker and the Snakes and his habit of recording with Dave Minehan. He has always surrounded himself with those that could help like Minehan and later Lou Mansdorf of Rum Bar Records.

Tom has a wide range of music he listens to and Steev gets into that. They talk about the “You’re Still Standing There” duet with Justine Covault and how that came about.

Donut Monoxide has a radio show on the Berkeley College campus. This week on the show was a very revealing interview with T-Boy Sonet of the French group Les Lullies. We know that group had a Real Kids fixation. They were in Boston in 2019 at the Midway and did a version of “Do the Boob”. We covered that wild show in the BGN. The video of “Do the Boob” is on the page.

In this interview we find out it’s not just the Real Kids (and they always mention the Taxi Boys) but other Boston groups like DMZ, Le Peste and Nervous Eaters. T-Boy says the ‘Boston sound’ is characterized by raw, straight to the point songs and the groups all have good singers. He even goes back farther and checks The Remains as an early great Boston band. It’s wonderful hearing this knowledgeable rocker give his French point of view.

Donut Monoxide then plays some Real Kids, Dawgs (then the Dogs from France) and some Les Lullies of course. The version of “Do the Boob” that Donut plays is from the Cincinnati group The Dents (not the Boston Dents – gee things get confusing!)]

To hear the show go to the KALX webpage. The interview starts an hour into the show, so hit the time and a drop down menu will enable you to go to 7pm and right to the interview.

Donut Monoxide clued us into the Trash Flow Radio show with Ken Katkin. This was a 2022 show about drummers who had recently died and that included Randall Lee Gibson IV.

Ken plays a nice line up of tunes from 21645, Scruffy the Cat, The Flies and the Hummingbird Syndicate plus one real obscurity The Coputators which was Randall’s first group. The Randall section starts about a fourth of the way through.

Bay State Rock is back! They have been on hiatus since February. Carm and Tez said they needed the break to catch up with things.

They started the show with a superior pop tune “Screaming at the Sky” by Glowbox. The news from the band though is sad. Their bass player Shawn Sullivan died after a short illness. Tez stopped to mention that his nephew died in a car accident and that was an emotional moment. They went on to play some of their favorites like Classic Ruins and The Dawgs along with new ones by Salem Wolves, Adam Sherman and the Wynotts.

Welcome back Bay State Rock!

Emma and Abby of Evil Felipe were on the Part-Time Rockstar podcast this week. Evil Felipe began in 2016 and are all currently students. The band has a very democratic set up. There’s no dictator in the group.

They had a good story on the background to the song “Summer Rain.” They said that they give out disposable cameras at shows and post the photos that people take with them.

The band hasn’t done a lot of gigs lately and they spot work and school concerns to account for that. They also have one member who is not of drinking age so they don’t play clubs where they can’t be admitted. They do have a house show in New York.

They also have a direct to vinyl session at Lessta Vall on August 10.

The Rat Tales podcast has added a 2011 interview with Kenne Highland. Kenne’s father was in the Marines and moved around a lot so Kenne’s early life is all over the South. Just as he joined the Marines he simultaneously discovered the Ramones. In 1977 he communicated with Miss Lyn (of the BGN) and came to Boston and saw the Real Kids. The punk days followed. Kenne has fantastic recall and puts dates to the shows he’s seen in Boston. Although he says he’s recorded so many records he doesn’t know them all.

The interview is an hour, and for Kenne that’s just warming up!!

Tim Livingstone had a killer first set on his Radio Warfare podcast this week.

He started with The Peawees from Italy and their new song “Plastic Bullets”. It’s a seventies style pop tune.

Then he played Tuff Darts' “Whose Been Sleeping In My Bed” and we realized that it had too long since we heard that early NYC group! The Yum Yums from Norway with the new pop delight “Poppin’ Up Again” was in there and even locals Amplifier Heads with “Dark Star”.

You’ve Got Me” by JW Paris has a lot of power coming through the playing that makes it appealing. “Draw Blood for Proof” by The Heat, Inc. is two years old but we never heard this slamming track from this London group. You can hear it on Bandcamp

NEW MUSIC/CDs......
Screw Cart Salem Wolves The Courettes

A new song by Screw Cart this week! This is part psycho, part history. “Smallpox Blanket” is about the true story of giving free blankets contaminated with smallpox virus to Native Americans.

One of the sickest nastiest things one can think of ... and of course perfect subject matter for Screw Cart to vent angst. They fuel themselves with dark matter like this and we love it!

The song has a nice head long steamrolling rhythm that kicks in immediately. The group is sounding better than ever. It seems like sharper recording and more elaborate arrangement. There’s a neat ethereal background vocal and then some cello…did we just say cello? Yes, it’s right in there with the wha wha guitar fills.

Salem Wolves' new single “So Desperate” is the leading song from a new album called The Psychotron Speaks. “So Desperate” spins a dark and moody web. The band’s name is so appropriate for material like this. The song has loads of atmosphere. The pace is slow and the drums emphasize the idea of fate marching you along.

The Courettes get a lot of love out there. Their latest is a series of older songs done in collaboration with the original artists.

They do “Hold On I’m Coming” with Sam and Dave singing with them. Dave (Prater) died in 1988 so it must be from recordings, which is what they did with “Can’t Put Your Arms Around a Memory” with Johnny Thunders.

They have some Flamin’ Groovies on “Shake Some Action” and “Never My Love” with the Association. The Courettes do a good job on their end and with that the concept is a guaranteed crowd pleaser.
