The BGN News Archive
The shocking news of the week was the last minute cancellation of the Channel 42nd Anniversary show at Roadrunner with the Del Fuegoes that was scheduled for Saturday 5/28. Dan Zanes sounded angry on Facebook. He blamed ‘corporate show biz’. He didn’t give any specifics. The Channel Podcast Facebook page also states the show was cancelled because of “unforeseen circumstances over the last 24 hours” but didn’t get more specific than that. It turns out it was a last minute insurance problem. Irresponsible!! They added that they’re working on rescheduling the show and that ticket holders should hang on to their tickets. People traveled here for the show and booked hotel rooms etc....These big venues suck ... and it sucks that there are more of them opening and less and less smaller clubs. Speaking of which....... Cambridge Day has a story on Mickey Bliss leaving the Cantab. Mickey is a model on how to deal with something like this. On the ending of his fifteen year Cantab gig he says it was a “business decision” by the club. He goes on to say, “I gave my notice very politely. (I am)..trying to live up to these philosophies I have: There’s no such thing as a just anger. Revenge is not a noble sentiment. You have to learn to forgive and forget.” Way to take the high road, Mickey!! We should all learn from Mickey’s example, it just makes us admire him more. We look forward to Mickey’s next step. The article confirms rumors we've read on Facebook: "The club wants to book more DJs from 10 p.m. to 2 a.m. starting June 1 and move live music to a 4 to 9 p.m. slot, Bliss said he was told. “An established band’s not going to come in from 4 to 9 p.m. and play. If they do play, nobody’s going to show up,” he said. "In addition, the Cantab is looking to rent the downstairs space for private events and will cancel whatever band was booked for that time, he said, and that also makes him uncomfortable: “When I book a band, I promise them they have the room unless there’s some kind of emergency.” This is cool. The First Ever Plymouth Punk Rock Flea Market happens on Saturday, July 30, a Saturday at The Mayflower Brewing Co. 12 Resnick Rd: "Vinyl records, housewares, accessories, repurposed metal art, oddities, vintage goods. Weird stuff for weird people." Check out the FB page for updated info We mentioned a few week sago that the ManRay sign was about to go up at the new location. It's UP!! 40 Prospect Street in Central Square. Boston Calling finally did it again after a two year hiatus. Chelsea Curve played Friday. There was a delay because of thunderstorms on Saturday but Dutch Tulips were on early so they should have played. Sunday is the day for Paper Tigers. Nice to have some locals playing the festival. Here’s an article on Boston.com and a video report on the WCVB website There is a Celebration of Life for David Mirabella show on Sunday, June 26. David of the Rationals died on April 28. The get together will be at Paddy O’s near Faneuil Hall area. There will be guitars and microphone for anyone to play and or relate stories about David. Facebook event page. The Brattle Theater is showing Freakscene: The Story of Dinosaur Jr at the Brattle THIS Tuesday May 31. It’s the long time story of the band: “With their style and unmistakable sound, Dinosaur Jr.—along with Nirvana and Sonic Youth—laid the foundation for the entire ‘Slacker’ culture of Generation X.” Tickets here Bandcamp will have their third annual Juneteenth fundraise: on June 17. 100% of sales go to the NAACP Legal Defense Fund, a racial justice organization with a long history of effectively enacting change through litigation, advocacy, and public education. Further statement on their webpage Also the popular Bandcamp Fridays will resume on September 2nd, and continue on October 7th, November 4th, and December 2nd.
If someone ever wants to know what synth pop is or even what the early eighties sounded like you can always point them to “Just Can’t Get Enough” by Depeche Mode. Rolling Stone has an interview with Josh McConnell, founder and creative director of the clothing store Straight to Hell , about the lasting influence of punk fashion. We can’t recall Rolling Stone caring much for punk when it counted though. A lot is made of the leather jacket, which goes back to the Ramones. The article in Rolling Stone Wow, remember Men & Volts? They are back together and are doing shows now, including: The Jungle! - June 26, The Midway! - August 14, Lilypad! - October 9. See more info in our Gig Listings or scroll below. And here is their Facebook page. VIDEOS...... Red on Red artist The Chelsea Curve had an exciting week, just back from London they played Boston Calling on Friday and they released a video for “Nothin’ Going On”. We welcome every reason to listen to something off their latest album All the Things again . They put some surreal twists onto a boring day by adding a random gorilla and an underground dance party. They have the some vintage auto that starred in The Winter Projects last video. Looks like a sixties Ford Galaxy? We found this when surfing around , StreetPunk – The Movie. It's from 2000 and documents the English punk of the late 90s. They cover a slew of groups: Sick on the Bus, Oxymoron, Police Bastard, Road Rage, UK Subs and more. One song that stuck out was “I Can Handle It” by the Guitar Gangsters . It’s 31 minutes into the movie or hear it on Spotify below.
The Menace right after Guitar Gangsters is also memorable as is Red Alert at the one hour forty five mark. In between the groups they interview punks. The first group they come back to a few times, they were waiting for a Sex Pistols reunion show to start. Another group were at an annual ‘Punk Picnic”. RADIO...... Boredom was a favorite punk song subject. We never were bored and never saw any bored people in the clubs but none the less there were many songs about it. These days Wet Leg’s “Chaise Lounge” continues the boredom theme although that song seems to have more of a sophisticated ennui air about it. Ron on the Late Risers Club on Monday had another additions to the bored songs. Simply titled “Bored”, it is by the Fat Earthers…that’s funny right there. It’s a new song but reeks of vintage boredom. Listen here
It’s instructive to hear songs you know in a radio show. Bumped up against other songs in a set it can be revealing. That was the case when Ron played the Baabes' “Hail the Junk King” in a raging punk set. Baabes didn’t just hold up they were even crazier sounding than the other songs.
Ron played Wet Leg doing a cover of the Talking Heads' “Psycho Killer”. You can hear that on YouTube or get to Ron’s show in the WMBR archive Finally we give you a heads up on Ron’s show this coming Monday he'll be playing a recording of Jesus Lizard at ManRay in 1990. Ron claims it’s the best rock show he has ever seen. PODCASTS......... Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico has Alex Peters this week in for a grilling. Alex managed Gang Green and has worked with Chris Doherty up to the current day. As a booker he was the first to bring the Dead Kennedy’s and Flipper to town. He also has revealing stories about behind the scenes at the Bradford Hotel where he booked many shows. At one point Alex created a band called Klover. Chris Doherty was in the band. They never clicked with the public but they did do a version of “All Kindsa Girls” that is quite good. Hear it on YouTube. Alex is also the guy behind the animated film Eddie’s Saloon. Alex reveals that the story line is some real life stories by Chris Doherty!! They have a fund raiser for that at Indegogo
Steeve ended the show with “Just Head” not by the Nervous Eaters but by The Homisides from Pittsburg. Click below to hear it on Bandcamp
NEW MUSIC/CDs...... Rum Bar’s latest drop is a group called The Magnificent. It’s a cadre of garage rockers lead by the Woggles frontman himself, Mighty Manfred, doing rhythm and blues. It’s pretty impressive and that’s just judging by the one track that has been released. Listen to “Monolithic” and hear for yourself.
Andrea Gillis has a new record on Red on Red Records. Like “Leave the Light On” she grabs you right off the bat with the vocal delivery on the first line. You can feel “About A Girl” is Andrea talking about herself going through life’s challenges. This is Andrea doing her thing and we’re lucky to have her in our midst here in Boston. It was recorded at Wooly Mammoth with David Minehan so everything sounds right and tight.
