Muck and the Mires will release Zoom Breakup, a vinyl EP on July 5. The songs are: "Take Me Back To Planet Earth", "Six O'Clock Baby", "She Blocked My Number", "He's Not The One", "Zoom Breakup", and bonus track "Hey Sunshine." Muck and the Mires have never slowed down. Even during covid they came out with songs like “Zoom Breakup.” They never let us down either in the recorded material or the fab live shows.
Gee, The Boston Globe discovers it’s hard to be a working musician in Boston these days. They profile Johnny Trama who has played the Plough and Stars for 12 years (600 shows). He’s a hard working guy, playing 300 gigs a year. The story if you can get by the paywall is here
BGN Travel Guide, Joanie Lindstrom, took a trip to Sweden and Norway. We have her writeup on it. Lots of record store recommendations and bar hopping. Joanie got an acoustic set by Michael Monroe when she thought it would be a full band. She has a new band crush with Upploppet and has a short vid of them. Being in Sweden she got to hang with Tommy and Erniz from Stupidity (photo to the right). She went to see some Northern Lights but they never happened. See the photos and a video of a bubbling drink at Joanie’s Sweden/Norway Vacation. VIDEOS...... Drew Stone interviewed photographer Kevin Salk who documented the Southern California punk scene and just published the book Punk Photos from a Fan’s Perspective. We love these vids where you get to see so many punk band photos. There’s lots of shots of the Misfits, Descendents, Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Minor Threat. You can get the book from Kevin Salk's website John Mulaney Presents: Everybody’s In LA was a short term show about Los Angeles. One segment had Fred Armisen gathering all the old LA punks and doing a group profile and then doing up a fast new tune titled “Ghosty Ghost Plays Superstar.” The group included Lee Ving, Mike Watt, Kid Congo, Don Bowles (Germs), Exene, Linda Ramone, DJ Bonebreak (X), Joe Biaza (Saccharine Trust), Penelope Houston, George Hurly (Minutemen) and Trudie (Plungers). It’s nice to see them have their moment. Punks are getting older but they aren’t getting quieter!! We were not expecting this – “Move on Groove On” a new song from The Shirts. The Shirts were in the first wave of punk bands from NYC. They got together in 1975 and were on the Live at CBGB’s album. They were almost the Rat house band for a while. They played the Rat with The Damned on that first famous time the group hit the states (see our Damned interview from that tour). The Shirts had less of a punk attack and for that appealed to more people who were scarred at the aggressive stance of some punk bands. It was singer Annie Golden who was most notable. She had a lot of punk stage moves and she's still doing some of them in this current video ... and she still has a strong voice. Annie went on to acting and was in the film version of Hair and later in Orange is the New Black and as the cab driver in 12 Monkeys. Now the Shirts are back and an album is on the way!! Stick to the end of the video where they have some live shots of the band from the seventies. Shirts fan page on Facebook
They have a pretty and nicely arranged song on the flip of the single - “Deux Royale”.
Before you watch the video of the song “So Desperate” from Salem Wolves you should know that the song is part of an album that will tell the story of a down on his luck 80s wrestler named The Stranger. In the video the wrestler is portrayed by actual wrestler Love, Doug . The video does a good job especially considering it is a low budget affair. The band is both the audience to Love, Doug supporting him and also his opponent. To us the song works so well it doesn’t even need the backstory.
RADIO...... On last Tuesday’s Rising show on WMFO Skybar had Bob and Chrissy from the Wynotts on for an interview. Skybar started them talking about the first incarnation of the Wynotts in 2007. They revealed that right from the beginning everyone wrote songs and that differentiates them even now. Skybar played a few recorded cuts. We can’t get enough of “Hey Sharon” which is one of their earliest songs and was written by drummer Peter DeVincent. Bob Cenci sang a few live songs. One was “Antidote,” the first cut off their album Way Back Now and that worked well acoustically. There are not a lot of bands that get together after a long gap like the Wynotts have ... and to have it seem so obviously right. To hear Skybar’s whole show go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button. PODCASTS......... Even Anngelle Wood admits that Boston Emissions has been spotty lately. Hey, she's had Rumble duties lately but there was a new show this week. She started heavy with Birnam Woods doing an older song “Richard Dreyfuss”. Birnam Woods’ heavy metal usually is associated with the devil and evil arts but here they go on about the actor Richard Dreyfuss which is very timely considering the Dreyfuss controversy on stage last week . The set continued the heavy music with some Stompbox and The Promised End. Anngelle is taking a summer hiatus. She'll continue to do the Songs of the Week list so bands should continue to send new material to the show.
Sethyspice went to Boston Calling and did a threefer of the groups he saw on the Elastic Glam Breakfast Show: Chappell Room, Hozier and The Killers. He was right on the new release by Bob Moss and the Skin-Tight Skins “Right Hook” featuring Curt Florczak. We review that in the new music section below. And you can read our Curt interview here!! We always love hearing Hello doing “New York Groove”. What is it about that tune that makes it so appealing? Sethyspice is such a good DJ. We love the way he gets local songs like “Sweet Life” by Tell to fit in a set so seamlessly like they may be a well-known song from somewhere.
It was another show filled with pop wonderfulness on Radio Warfare with Tim Livingston. There was so much music of interest in this show. We were blown away early with the song “The Gutter Snobs” by The Beat Angels from Phoenix. It's from their album recorded between 1998 and 2001 and finally released in 2022. It seems to be on vinyl only, we can’t find any streaming versions. The group disbanded in 2007, but their website is still up. And here's their FB page. Tim played some Jook, an early UK group that was one of our faves back in 1978. Then another fave - Connecticut’s The Reducers. It was nice to hear the early English group The Boys doing “Punk Rock Girl” from their later album Punk Rock Menopause from 2016. We loved the brand new single “Skyline” by The Lovebreakers from Birmingham, UK. That song was so good we want to hear their new album Wonder. Their Instagram page Locals Amplifier Heads gets their “GlamOrama” from They Came to Rock in the mix. We could go on…lots of primo pop punk in this show. Time for you to listen.
The Trash Flow Radio podcast has one of the best Steve Albini memorial/retrospective. Ken Katkin the DJ began by playing a song that Albini recorded with his band in high school. That signals that this would go deeper than most other shows on Albini. The show is filled with stories by people that both knew Steve well and those that just met him in passing. There’s lots of comments by Steve too. We love when he talks about his admiration for Kim Deal of the Breeders. It ends with an unheard demo by Fugasi of material that became “Great Cop” that they recorded with Albini. The show is just shy of two hours in length with no time wasted. This was initially broadcast on WAIF noncommercial radio in Cincinnati.
NEW MUSIC/CDs...... Joanie Lindstrom played “The Slug” from Mean Jeans latest album Blasted on her Late Riser Club show on Thursday. That got us to Bandcamp to listen to their album We loved the first song “I Don’t Give A Shit Anymore”. It’s a blast of Ramones punk. Only the fill in guitar sound un-Ramones-like. The whole album owes so much to the Ramones and is a reminder how that one group changed the landscape in the mid-seventies. If you stop to think of all the music that has come from those down stroked power chords it’s staggering. The Mean Jeans add their twists and tweaks to the formula to come up with a beauty like Blasted. Joanie played “Slugs” but we’re going to leave you with “I Don’t Give A Shit Anymore” but there’s good listening in these 15 cuts for punk lovers.
“The Spirit of Massachusetts Avenue” by Boston group Already Dead uses the street to talk about some city issues. The video will be released on June 12. It shows the group walking the street, especially the Mass Ave bridge, that separates Boston from the Cambridge college town. The group drills down deep and puts the power in the sound and yells the lyrics to match.
Buffalo Tom have a new 14 cut album Jump Rope. The first two songs were previously released and are a bit more electric than the rest of the album. It seems to us that Buffalo Tom fit into the current zeitgeist just fine. Their more acoustic sound coupled with well-crafted songwriting is just the thing people are looking for, or it’s just timeless to begin with.
Rob Moss and the Skin Tight Skin are piling up songs with interesting guest musicians. The latest is “Right Hook” and this one features guitarist Curt Florczak. Curt’s solo is double tracked or on a delay – whatever, but it sounds awesome. Moss is getting great performances from all his guests.
Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' new song. “Frogs” is haunting. The lyrics repeat the phrase “in the Sunday rain” so many times you would think the title would be that. The lyrics, according to Nick, have to do with the story of Cain and Able. It’s four and a half minutes long and easily sustains its power for that time and for us it could have gone longer still. Songs like this are why people are fanatics for Nick. The song is from the album Wild God out on August 30. There is a lyric video on YouTube
We came across this self-titled hardcore album by New Hampshire group Gagger. It was released in 2023. We like ALL the songs. We also favor the scatological songs like “ Shit or Go Blind” and “Life is Shit”. We like “Eat My Ass” even better but the best is the straight out “Fuck Off”. That song has an early punk sound to it. It also proves to us that you can’t say “fuck” too many times in a punk song, it just works. We have it on our Top Ten Songs
