The BGN News Archive
Shock and disbelief were the two immediate responses to the news of Justine Covault’s sudden death. Then there was heartbreak. There has been a tsunami of online posts that reflect how she was loved and respected. It also shows her wide effect on the Boston music scene. Justine came to Boston from Michigan and was in the groups Quest for Tuna and Grand Theft Auto in the 80's and Malachite, which were runners up in the 1993 Rumble she was also played bass in Moose & The Mudbugs. Then dropped out for a while to raise her "VFH", daughter Haley. Around 2017 she reinterred the Boston rock scene. In 2016 Justine joined up with Jay Allen to start their much loved Mess Around at the Plough & Stars. It was the summer of 2017 that Justine started Justine & The Unclean. The first single “Love Got Me Into This Mess”/”Passive Aggressive Baby” was a punk nugget, the kind of which we used to get a plenty in 1977 not at all in 2017. It was almost too good to be true. It was lively and funny. The lyrics had their laughs (“In love with you, whatever the cost/Knowing you that involves Fort Knox.”) but you know they reflected real life situations. Later she got serious, say with the current album’s “Drug Seeking Behavior” and “Picking a Fight.” All told The Unclean produced five albums. Justine also had some country in her voice although you wouldn’t have guessed that from that first Unclean album but she was solid in that vein with The Black Threads. We soon saw that Justine was that most unusual individual: one who was creative and had a business sense… and a strong sense of community. First, she started the Whistle Stop shows, a close-knit group of woman taking their rock bands in a tour together around the state…or until Covid came. The Whistle Stop show at Once was one of the last big shows before the shut down and one everyone remembers. It’s when we saw The Chelsea Curve, not for the first time but the time when we went WHOA! What was that? It was the time we saw Kid Gulliver revel in an audience that cheered them on, after working so hard to get to that point. It was the first show for The Shang Hi Los and Powerslut did their last show with Linnea Herzog ready for her next chapter. When Covid hit we all held up in our houses with a few finding a way forward. Justine, against all common sense started her label Red on Red Records In reality we needed creative people to help us navigate those scary times. With a lot of work and good taste Justine built up her roster of artists. She had a regular schedule of videos that showcased the acts she was leading: Jacklights, Lee Harington and Lynda Mandolyn, Linnea’s Garden, Daylillies, Andrea Gillis and Canyons and Locusts, Speedfossil, even Stupidity from Sweden and scooping up The Neighborhoods for good measure. It was truly a gift to those of us who couldn’t get out to get ourselves entertained. One thing we always say about ourselves is that we are fanatic about our music and we appreciate those fanatics that create the music and keep us connected to the continuum of our scene. That would be Justine. That’s one of the main reasons for the outpouring of feelings for her along with the fact that she just happened to be friendly, loving to so many and generally and genuinely outgoing. She didn’t have to be onstage to have you know she was in the room, just being there she made the night special. We all know there is now a big gap that Justine’s work filled. We feel her loss and we feel that music loss. So many people have that close personal loss and we wish them courage and strength to go on. Justine was just on Skybar’s WMFO Rising show last week. This week Brian Young on A Crash Course for the Ravers played a lot of Justine and the Unclean’s songs and then artists from Red On Red. He also played an interview with Phillipe Marcade as well as songs from The Senders. Phillipe died this week and we talk about that next below. To listen to the show in the archive version go to the WMFO Schedule page and hit A Crash Course for the Ravers at 1pm Saturday then hit the archive button. Justine's passing was marked in Vanyaland and here is a obit/tribute on The Current Pulse
Philippe Marcade died this week from pancreatic cancer at age 68. Although Philippe’s name may not be known to most casual punk music listeners the more dedicated will know him from his NYC group The Senders. He was in the middle of the punk explosion at CBGB’s. In 2017 Phillipe wrote his autobiography Punk Avenue: Inside the New York City Underground, 1972-1982. It was a Finalist in the 2017 Indie Book Awards for Autobiography/Memoir, Foreword Reviews In the book he relates coming to Boston. He hung with John Felice and The Senders played with the Real Kids at the Rat and Paradise. A lot of that book had to do with his drug addiction. He was by all accounts a very charming man. A 2017 interview with Marcade on The Punk Site The Senders music is on Bandcamp, see below. We really like “You Really Piss Me Off”.
The English group The Len Price Trio announced their short USA tour. They will be playing Geno’s (Oct 12), The Burren Back Room (Oct 13) and Parkside Lounge NYC (Oct 14)
Jonathan Richman was famous for just popping up on the Cambridge Common and doing a set, just him and his guitar. It was his thing. It demonstrated a different attitude than the regular rock artist of the day. He’s still doing it. According to the Brooklyn Vegan, Richman now lives in Chico, CA (northern part of the state) and pops up in different places to share a few songs. He was playing on a bench outside the Naked Lounge. When asked if he wanted to go inside and play he said, “I’m busy.” HA HA we luv it!!! Here’s the story in the Brooklyn Vegan
This is a reminder that Brother Cleve’s record collection is now at Want List Records. Brother Cleve was a taste maker in music. He drove the interest in Tiki music and Exotica. The records that shaped those movements are in his collection. The sale started Friday 6/9. The store is at 381 Eliot St, Newton Upper Falls. They have a video preview of some of the records which gives you an idea of what’s in the collection. More info on the Want List Records website
Dan Kopko is in The Shang Hi Los, Watts, The Peppermint Kicks, and The Amplifier Heads; but that’s not enough for Dan. What a workaholic! Now, he’s got a solo project coming out under the moniker Danny the K. His EP Cigarettes & Silhouettes is due out on July 14. The first single “Roller Derby Girl” will be available on June 16. Both from Rum Bar Records. Dan also says the Shang Hi Los will have their new album out early next year!
Greg Hawkes of the Cars has a collection of artwork on exhibit at the Lincoln Library. His series focuses on Alice in Wonderland. They are collages with many of the faces being of Greg himself, he made the collages with his phone, Ipad and a few apps. The article bu Jim Sullivan about the show is on WBUR.org.
John Lydon is doing I Could Be Wrong I Could Be Right, a 45 day spoken word tour in the UK in 2024. There are no American dates... yet ...Europe, Australia and North America, will be announced soon. The provocative and entertaining Lydon has had much success talking and writing about the Sex Pistols and punk. That has keeps him in a high profile after the Pistols. Miss Lyn was there for his NYC talk in 2019 at Museum of Art & Design along with the exhibit Too Fast to Live, Too Young to Die: Punk Graphics, 1976-1986 PIL has a new album, End of The World due out on August 11th, and they are doing a 2023 UK/Euro tour in September and October. Dates & Tix here.
And just a reminder that - Coming up this Tuesday June 13th at The Brattle Theater is the first time showing of The Cramps and The Mutants playing at Napa State, a psychiatric hospital in Northern California on June 13, 1978. Wow 45 years ago!!! What resulted may be the most unique punk show ever, as the two bands played for the residents at the hospital, a rehabilitation facility that was skimming the danger of being shut down by former California Governor Ronald Reagan. Here for the first time ever: the long-lost tape of The Mutants playing at Napa State and the full tape of The Cramps’ show, both unedited and fully remastered from the original reel-to-reel videotape. In between the shows is We Were There To Be There, a new short documentary about how the Napa State show happened and its lasting effect. – Notes courtesy of Grasshopper Films. Link to buy tickets in the Gig Listings below (Scroll on down!) Also coming up on June 29th (7:30PM) is Heaven Stood Still: The Incarnations of Willy DeVille - The life and times of the most original American singer/ songwriter of the last 50 years presented by Doc'n Roll Film Festival ...a Boston Premiere Screening Event! - at The Regent Theater Arlington.Tickets and preview here. "There was no one like the American singer Willy DeVille. From CBGB’s Latin punk to New Orleans soul singer to the premiere voice of American roots music on the continent of Europe for three decades, he was arguably the most original, most romantic artist of his time, writing and performing the Academy Award-nominated theme to the movie The Princess Bride. No one inhabited as many musical styles and personas, and everything about him was a work of art." VIDEOS...... Lynda Mandolyn and Chris Horne of Tiger Bomb were interviewed on the Mike Rogers Show, which is from Japan. It’s a lively interview. They talked about the groups (and reformed Brood) playing in Mallorca, Spain. They also have 14 new songs they are working up to eventually record for a new album. The 2007 movie Control is on Youtube now, with commercials. It's the story of Ian Curtis of Joy Division. The director, Anton Corbijn, worked with Joy Division as a photographer. The movie was based on the biography Touching from a Distance by Curtis's widow Deborah, who also served as a co-producer. It is in black and white and two hours long. The movie is age restricted by YouTube which means we cannot embed it here, you have to go to YouTube to view it We saw Canada’s The Penske File at O’Brien’s in June 2016. We always remembered that gig because the group was so energetic and put it all out!! They have a new video for the song “Chorus Girl” which shows their pop punk in service to a sweet video narrative. RADIO......
Joanie on WMBR’s Late Risers Club played, “Taxes and Death” from the hard and pumping Aussie band called Cousin Betty. There’s so much good punk coming out of Australia!!
Joanie also played an older song by Restraining Order from Western Mass but we’re going to post this brand new one titled “Misled” because it’s a nice slice of hardcore. A whole new album will be coming out soon on Triple B Records.
To hear Joanie’s archived show go to the WMBR archive page and hit Thursday at 10am. NEW MUSIC/CDs...... Brad Marino has a new digital single out. “Ramones and Stones” tells you what you could guess…Brad loves the two groups above all others. The song suitably has a strong Ramones sound. Brad gets some good couplets out of the theme. The lyrics are on the Bandcamp page. The other song,“Dame Darcy” is from Brad’s earlier group The Rydells. Dame Darcy is a person we didn’t know about. Brad plays everything on this single…guitar, drums and bass.
Last week we mentioned the live set Sapling did on On the Town With Mikey Dee. The group has made things easy by posting the set on their Bandcamp page. It’s yet another easy way to get up to speed on this most interesting group. Here it is all below.

This show is still happening in honor of Justine!! Jay said:"Over 7 years ago I had a vision, of a fun rock’n’roll get together at a club perhaps once a month and we would have different guests. I asked my two pals, Justine Covault who had just started playing again, and Tom Baker if they would join me in turning my artistic vision into a reality and thus The Mess-Around was born. Ever the voice of reason, she talked me out of ending every Mess-Around with a pie fight. A week from now we will celebrate our 7th Anniversary and its with the heaviest of hearts that we have do it without our Mess Queen, Justine. There is a part of me that wants to cancel the show but I know she would kick my ass if I did. So the Mess will carry on.
