The BGN News Archive
Kid Gulliver’s Spanish tour took a dramatic turn when Simone Berk showed signs of Covid just after the last show. She wasn't allowed on the plane or back in the US until she logged a negative test for the virus. So, we thought we'd get the story from Simone; from what inspired her to do a tour of Spain to how they did it and how the shows went. Connections the band created via networking their music facilitated their tour. That’s a lesson for all bands ... you have to work to spread your name and music all the time if you plan to get beyond Boston. In the interview you will see some of the people who they were able to enlist for tour help. They know some Boston music in Spain. Simone says they are fans of the Real Kids, Lyres and Jonathan Richman ... they even met a BGN fan over there!! There’s a lot more to read and see. Hit the photo link below for the whole interview. Captain Easychord got to see Freeloader at Sally O’Brien’s. That’s Nat Freedberg's band with local favorites Charles Hanson, drummer Jim Janota and Jim Haggerty on bass. For the review hit the photo link below. This weekend - Saturday June 18th is Arlington Porchfest. Lydia Lunch's two Murderous Again performances in Salem were both sold out, fast! There's a great review of the show by Sophie Lou Yarin on the Boston Hassle site. Lydia hasn’t lost her intensity, even after all these years. Read it here. Roger Miller's Trinary System will have two shows in New England: Fri., June 24 in Providence, RI, at Dusk with Minibeast. He give this tantalizing hint, “will I be sitting in with my former bandmate on a song or two? Likely!” ... The other show is Saturday, June 25 in Somerville, MA, at The Jungle - with the amazing Landowner and upcoming Boston band Rong. Trinary System is ramping up to record their new album the end of July. Carmelita of the Bay State Rock podcast has received a lot of encouragement to continue her show, after her admission that she was thinking of ending it. This week she posted a statement that she is going to continue it after all. That was a scare. It was also a reminder that almost everyone in the scene that has a show or band is putting in time and effort with no monetary reward. That’s the way it always has been too. Amazing when you think of it. Her statement is on her
Facebook page.
Well, we were going to print this: The newer version of the Dead Boys are on tour again, but they aren't playing Boston. They'll be at The Vault in New Bedford on October 23rd. Also on the bill are The Briefs and Suzi Moon. This is the only New England date for the Dead Boys. But then this happened: "ANNOUNCEMENT: The Vault Music Hall will be closing down effective immediately. We’re working with the agents for all of the bands that were scheduled over the next several months to see if we can get the shows moved to other venues within the region, so keep an eye out for announcements regarding that. All tickets for future shows will be refunded over the next few days. "The Pub side will be closing down as well, with tentative plans to reopen under a new concept. Further details will be released as that progresses. We want to thank everybody who has supported us as a live music venue featuring some of the best entertainment that has ever been brought to this city. It’s been a fun ride!" So sudden!! They had some interesting shows with more scheduled. It was making a difference on the South Shore where rock venues are sparse. The Vault Facebook page VIDEOS...... The Pixies' new album Doggerel is coming out on September 30. They released a second song from the album called “There’s a Moon On” and that came with a video. The video just has some graphics along with the lyrics on screen. The song is a little more straight ahead than usual. Give it a look above. They also have released a six minute video about the making of the album, which was done in Vermont. That is shown in the video above right. The first song from the album sounded more like typical Pixies. That was “Human Crime”. See the video here You Weren’t There is a two hour documentary about the Chicago punk scene from 1977 to 1984. The reminiscing of the early days sounds like Boston’s but theirs was even crazier. They point out that Tutu and the Pirates might have been the first Chicago punk band – never heard of them. Later they go into Naked Raygun and The Effigies. At one point they show a gig poster that says “from Boston Mission From Burma”…close, anyway. They get into the feud between Steve Albini and Bondi of Articles of Faith. There’s no fat in this documentary. They get right into it and it’s a solid two hours of facts and music. Robin Lane has joined the Red on Red Records roster. She comes out of the gate with a video/song “All I’ve Ever Need.” Robin brings a lot to the game, her songwriting and voice obviously, but also her outlook and the feeling she brings to her work. This video does a good job of bringing it all back again. RADIO......
Skybar had his usual locally loaded Rising show last Tuesday. To hear it, go to the WMFO Schedule. Rising is on Tuesday at 8 pm and then hit ‘archive’. Some of the songs and groups we have featured here like The Chelsea Curve, Tiger Bomb, Andrea Gillis, Screeching Weasel and the Runouts. He did play one tune that got by us - “Baby Baby” by Continental. It's on the Rum Bar Records compilation Rebel Rousers: Second Round. It's in advance of a new album coming out soon. So many rockers have intoned “Baby” in songs that a singer has to worry about comparisons but Rick Barton sings it with authority and makes it his own. The melody has a throwback quality which bumps up against the modern band sound. Then the kicker at 1:10 minute mark where they quote The Rolling Stones’ “Under My Thumb”. Then there are some horn riffs - they may by synth made. Continental has been around for a while. We saw them at O’Brien's in 2010 but this song got our attention anew!! Give it a listen below.
NEW MUSIC/CDs..... For 60s garage rock fans there’s this 2 LP compilation of Chicago’s Dunwich Records releases called Potato Chip: Tasty Dunwich Garage. There’s a few The Shadows of Knight tunes (not the hits) and a few commercials. One is for potato chips, hence the title of the collection. There’s a very respectable cover of “My Generation” by The Rovin’ Kind. “Project Blue” by the Banshees is a energetic rave up. The Saturday’s Children’s “Man With Money” reminded us that the Crybabies used to cover that Everly Brothers’ song too. Potato Chip: Tasty Dunwich Garage, will be released on July 15, You can get it through Bandcamp There is one song posted that you can hear now. It’s the Knaves doing “Your Stuff”.
