Nervous Eaters
Nervous Eaters

The wait is over, The Nervous Eaters released their new song and video. “Wild Eyes.” The video is professionally mapped out, shot and edited. It features Kelly Knapp (Bristols, Darlings) as the desired woman. This is a better video than anyone has put out for a long while. It reminds you of the way things used to be.

“Wild Eyes” has the Nervous Eaters sound but it’s uplifting and soars in a new way for the group. We’re a sucker for that 12 string sound that this has too. Like the video the recording of the song speaks of professional studio time.

Nervous Eaters

The Eaters are now on Wicked Cool Records, the label set up by Little Steven Van Zandt. It’s nice to see the Eaters getting this support at this point in their career. Steve Cataldo’s talent is a lot of the reason for their longevity, but it’s also his persistence and keeping his eye on the ball that has brought the group to this point. Even with all the problems out there now they're well poised to take advantage of this time and make a mark with this new material. “Wild Eyes” was the Coolest Song In the World this week on Little Steven’s Underground Garage! The video’s premier was on the Big Takeover magazine website

“Wild Eyes” is on a lot of digital platforms. Bandcamp has the song as a digital single coupled with the original “Loretta”.

The mention of “Loretta:” will make you want to get a hit of that. Here it is on Bandcamp.

There’s a lot of buzz on the repressing of SS Decontrol’s Kids Will Have Their Say album.

SSD

On "There's Something Hard in There" the blogger Andy and Cat Rose share memories of the album when it came out originally (with a first pressing of only 1900). They also post some comments from SSD drummer Chris Foley like "To say that the album helped to shape my formative years would be an understatement. The whole hardcore scene was such a big stepping stone in my life. And it turns out a whole lot of people feel that way, too," He mentions that some of the album was recorded at Radiobeat in Kenmore Square. Jimmy DuFour seems to have disappeared off the face of the earth. Does anyone know what happened to him??

Parsons at Porchfest
Richie Parsons at Quincy Poarchfest

We got to the Quincy Porchfest on Saturday to see Richie Parsons do a set. It was a hot day but there was plenty of shade and it was comfortable.

There was a lot of talk about the spread of Covid. Richie's guitarist and drummer both got Covid so they were not there. But even short the group sounded full and the melodies came out strong. Later Pat Noe was a fill in drummer for some songs. He did a great job, he should have played the whole set. Elissa on viola does wonders as a support. She supplies counter melodies and classical colors.

Richie Parsons CDThere’s something to be said of playing outside. When the conditions are right and the balance is good it’s a more open sound than in a club where the mix is being controlled by the soundman. Richie’s guitar sounded just rough enough in the open air. Richie did two of our faves: “Love Letters” and “Blue and Grey” by Richard Lloyd. Everything stops for us when “Blue and Grey” is playing.

Some of the other songs were ; “Blue Sands”, “Winter Dreams”, ‘Mix Tape” and “When You’re Dancing”. There are lots of songs to love in Parson’s solo material. It’s all on Bandcamp

Pit-A-Palooza happened this past Saturday. it was a good bye to the old Harvard Square and "The Pit" and a celebration of the kids of The Pit, the "Pit Rats." The Pit even has it’s own Facebook page.

City Councilor Marc McGovern is working to get a bronze plaque placed in teh "revitalized" area that will read:

The PitHere gathered between the years 1982 and 2022, the Pit Rats,
a motley crew of punks, riot grrrls, breakdancers, time-warpers,
trouble-makers, slackers, living statues, trash poets and day-dreamers.
Long may they rage.

"It’s something unpredictable
But in the end, it’s right
I hope you had the time of your life"
~ Green Day

Here’s an article on the Pit celebration.

The Pit-A-Palooza was "made possible by a generous donation from Newbury Comics."

Peter Gates Which reminds us that Ooops, we forgot ... congratulations to Peter Gates for retiring from Newbury Comics!! For many Peter was the face of Newbury Comics especially when he was at the Newbury St. location. Peter has been a perennial on the Boston scene. We are lucky to have Newbury Comics which has been supplying jobs to punks for over 40 years. It has been part of the scene in its way.

Just recently we saw how it’s seeped into the culture itself. In Sugartown (2006) the book of poetry by David Rivard there's a poem that mentions Newbury Comics. Rivard teaches at Tufts and lives in Cambridge. He has won several literary prizes. In the poem Della the title character is viewed in a mall…”you stood by yourself beside the Newberry Record store, above you the poster of a singer…” The spelling is different but it’s Newbury Comics alright.

Roger Miller has updated his Blog and he always has a lot going on.

He just played two shows with his group Trinary System. They're getting ready to record an album, one that was delayed because of Covid.

Roger MillerHis solo project called “Eight Dream Interpretations for Solo Electric Guitar Ensemble” is an "art music" creation, it will be on Cuneiform Records. Another art music project titled "Music for String Quartet and Two Turn-Tables" will be recorded at Berklee later this summer.

His silent move soundtrack group The Anvil Orchestra will record a CD of The History of the Civil War, which is scheduled for release in September of 2022.

His group Sproton Layer’s record called Press Your Hand and the Whole Room Fluctuates has found a home on Third Man Records. They'll release a double-album of Sproton Layer in 2023, Another museum music piece called "Transmuting the Prosaic" will be posted in the 3S Artspace in Portsmouth NH in November.

So, I guess some of us are busy.

If you go to his blog you can also see a photo of Roger at a rock concert in Ann Arbor in 1968!

Analog recording was supposed to go the way of vinyl records and that never happened. These days recordings are often a combination of analog and digital.

When studios started to go digital, Sonic Youth bought up the tape that many studios were dumping. They would take trips to NYC and come home with a car loaded with reels of tape. Now, they finally realize they have more than they will ever need…. so they're selling their excess. The story is on Reverb.com You can buy the tape on the Sonic Youth Reverb Shop

Dropkick Murphys The Dropkick Murphys have gone country! wait, what??? Well, they did cover Woody Guthrie's “Gonna Be A Blackout Tonight” on one of their earlier albums. Now their entire new album This Machine Still Kills Fascists, is a tribute to Woody Guthrie. They even worked with Woody Guthrie’s daughter, Nora Guthrie who curated the 10 songs on the disk.

One of their earlier songs “I'm Shipping Up To Boston” which was in the film The Departed, was inspired by some incomplete Woody Guthrie lyrics. Now, they've expanded that idea and created a body of work that will be two albums. The first of the two, This Machine Still Kills Fascists, will be released September 30.

It's all acoustic but it still sounds very much like the Dropkicks, judging from the small clips we heard on the promo video. You can read the article and see the promo video at the Saving Country Music website

It's summer and there are music festivals ....

The English Glastonbury Festival is happening now. We always knew it was big but this big? Try scrolling down these listings for the three day festival. It’s insane!! Festival line up

VIDEOS......

Canyons and Locusts

Red on Red’s Canyons and Locusts have a new video for their song “ Night of the Locust,” from their album Roll the Dice. The video has a humorous tone but the song seems to have a darker side to it.
We have a review of their album below.

The Sloths

Sloth Fist (hardcore punk rock and roll from Dallas, TX), has a take on the great resignation and corporate greed. If you are victim of that, their song “Cut Through It” will be cathartic for you. Punk is perfect for this!! The song is on their upcoming album, Bombs Away, on MindPower Records comes out on October 7. You can Order it here. Sloth Fist FB page. SlothFist.com.

RADIO......

X Ray SpecsOn Monday DJ Ron turned his Late Risers Show over to Claire McLellan-Cassivi who usually does the Out of Your Orbit show on Sunday nights. Claire took the opportunity to play some classic punk as well as some new stuff. She started with X-Ray Specs, and then on to Rezillos, Damned, Gang of Four and Husker Du.

She played some Polish, Finnish and Japanese punk to switch things up, then some older material like Sonics, Capt Beefheart and the Monks.

Great show to take in. You can find it by going to the WMBR Archives and playing the Monday June 20th show.

PODCASTS.........

Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico gets Al Quint on the show for the second time. Steeve gets Al to talk about some house and alternative space shows that he frequents. Al also talks about the SS Decontrol re-release and other records that have had new pressings. It’s so interesting to hear Al talk about those early hardcore shows.

There’s a lot of talk about new bands and Al gives some recommendations. He listens to a lot of music. This is a very good episode of Blowing Smoke. Hey when will there be a BGN Blowing Smoke??

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Screeching Weasel Canyons and Dice

Screeching Weasel is squeezing out one song at a time off their album. Well, it worked. “Just Another Fool” is a pumping pop punker that you want to hear. There’s some production on this with some instruments in the background that you can barely hear. What you can hear is the organ work which adds a lot. Ben Weasel says his ten year old son plays that!

There’s a ton of groups that have songs in the Ramones style. “I Should Have Cried” by the Budweisers is another one, but there is a difference. They do the Ramones thing on the verse but the chorus has a whole different mode going on. It drops the straight power chords and the song structure opens for a short wistful tuneful section.

The Budweisers come from Spain. It seems like it’s Spain’s time these days with a lot of interesting groups popping up.

We also like “Christmas Bells”, the surfy “That’s the Way”, and “The Things I Never Told You”. We’re sticking that last one on our Top Ten Songs.

Red on Red’s Canyons and Locusts are a duo. Their material is marked by that. They don’t add much if anything over the guitar and drums. There is nowhere to hide with that set up. The sparseness is part of the attraction.

We like “Incumbra Volcana” which is one of the more straight ahead songs and then “At the Bottom of the Desert” which is where they get the noisiest.

We give you “Incumbra Volcana” to hear.
