Yet more sad news ... Windle Davis from Human Sexual Response and partner to Dini Lamot has passed away. Windle was one of the singers that made HSR sound so different. People loved and held onto that group. They filled the House of Blues with sold out shows for their reunion decades after their run. Windle was a soft spoken gentleman whose kind heart left a deep impression on so many! He and Dini moved to Hollywood after HSR broke up. Tired of that scene they moved to Hudson, NY and refurbished old gorgeous cottages and buildings there. Finally settling on and completely refurbishing an abandoned nursing home into their Inn at Hudson, a bed and breakfast. Windle and Dini were a strong presence in the arts and entertainment in Hudson with puppet theater and drag shows. They eventually moved to Florida. RIP Windle and our sympathy goes out to Dini, Windle's partner for over 40 years.
From The Dogmatics: "We're having a big fundraiser for the a Rockland High School radio station WRPS on August 26. The station is run by the high school students and they have absolutely the best playlists! They play so many Boston local acts from Kenne Highland, us, Lyres, Dark Buster, Gypsy Moths, Turbines, Unatural Axe, Muck and the Mires....on and on." (you can check out some playlists here!) "The fundraiser is for the station and they will use that money for scholarships to the high school students that work there. The high school auditorium holds 700 people and we would LOVE to fill it up!!" Hey folks even if you can't go how about you buy a ticket anyway?? ...The Dogs say "We kept the price low - $15 clams for the movie with us playing after." Sounds like a win win situation either way! Doors at 6 pm, Movie at 7 pm (90 min), followed by a live band performance. Check out the WRPS website. Buy tickets here!!
Road trip in the future! The Brooklyn Museum will have a exhibit in November on 'Artists Who Make Fanzines" Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines will run November 17, 2023–March 31, 2024, It includes Dirt Magazine and even The Boston Groupie News!! "Copy Machine Manifestos: Artists Who Make Zines is the first exhibition dedicated to the rich history of five decades of artists’ zines produced in North America. Since the 1970s, fanzines, magazines, or self-published booklets of texts and images, usually made with a copy machine—have given a voice and visibility to many operating outside of mainstream culture. Artists have harnessed the medium’s essential role in communication and community building and used it to transform material and conceptual approaches to art making across all media....Featuring nearly one thousand zines and artworks by nearly one hundred artists, Copy Machine Manifestos demonstrates the importance of zines to artistic production and its reception across North America." Read more about it here. Punktuation website lists the Top Ten Clubs that Infuenced Punk….and no the Rat is not on it. Their list is: CBGB’s, 100 Club, Max’s Kansas City, Whiskey a Go GO, Marquee Club, SO36 (Berlin), The Vortex, Le Gibus (Paris), The Roxy and The Hanger (Brazil). Congrats to Stereo Jack's for winning the 2023 Best Record Store in Boston Magazine. The success of the Ball Square store has been the feel good story of the last year for sure. You can’t ‘pretend they are dead’ because L7 will be playing live in Boston on their "In Your Space" tour. They have a new single coming out soon and have a tour ready to launch on September 14. The "In Your Space" tour is specififcally about smaller venues and their show in Boston will be at the Brighton Music Hall on September t6th. More details on the Brooklyn Vegan website VIDEOS.... Nightclubbing: The Birth of Punk in New York City by Danny Garcia can be seen on Tubi TV . This hour and a half documentary is brisk moving and packed with people and groups that populated the early New York Scene. The main focus is on Max’x Kansas City. That’s a lesser known story than CBGB’s but very important. You hear a lot from Alice Cooper. He was at Max’s a lot. Later Billy Idol tells his story. In 1969 it was Stooges, Velvet Underground and then the New York Dolls. Wayne County was the first Max’s act to play CBGB’s and that was before Television played there. Then the documentary goes into the CBGB’s story and that leads to Malcolm McLaren’s involvement with the Dolls. Then it’s back to Max’s with the Heartbreakers/Thunders era. It also covers those last Sid Vicious shows he did there. They have live clips of Sonny Vincent and Elliot Murphy, The final days of Max’s saw the Misfits playing and early Bad Brains. Almost unbelievable is that the owners were forging money in Max’s basement!! They got caught and Max’s ended. You have to go to the Tubity webside to see the film Fresh Fruit for Rotting Eyeballs is a Dead Kennedys documentary. But you will soon realize when watching that there's no Jello Biafra in the film. Jello and the band have been angry at each other for years. What you get is bassist Klaus Flouride and guitarist East Bay Ray, two original members, telling the story. The band’s first show was at the Mabuhay Gardens. They got popular right away and the first single sold 6,000 just from the band selling it. They show an early live clip of the band doing “California Uber Alles” and it’s tremendous! You can see why they got attention and that’s true with all the live clips. Among the talking heads is Johnny Angel giving his views. He was at the famous DK show at the Rat and that gets discussed. That was on the DK first tour. The film covers Biafra’s run for Mayor of San Francisco but they never talk about the antipathy between Jello and the band members. Be Your Own Pet is a group from Nashville. Their new album Mommy on Third Man Records (Jack White’s label) will be released in August. We got drawn in by the video of the song “Goodtimes.” The lyrics paint a picture of someone who never gets called for the parties anymore…is it because she’s a mommy with two kids and a mortage? WTF! She used to be the life of the party but now she’s not so juvenile. Rock used to illustrate the pains of growing up but this is about the pains of being a grown up. Rocks pretty good too! Linnea’s Garden's new video “In the City” features Carissa Johnson. It seems like a very collaborative effort. The song has a disco feel to it. We have learned that Linnea will co-opt any style she sees fit. In the video they're club hopping. It does a nice job capturing a late night feeling. Linnea’s guitar weaves through it all. Guitarist Steve Conte’s credits are long. We know him from stints in the New York Dolls and Michael Monroe’s bands like Hanoi Rocks. He’s done a solo album and has another on the way on Wicked Cool Records. This song “Fourth of July” is the leading single from that upcoming album. It’s co-written by Andy Partridge of XTC. We don’t get a lot from Partridge these days, so that is major. Conte has written four other songs with Partridge also. It has a little XTC flavor in the 12 string (sounds like) lines that are in the chorus. The video has carnival/amusement park imagery with that New Jersey boardwalk smiley face showing up too. The Breeders are releasing a 30th anniversary version of their 1993 debut album Big Splash and are going on tour to celebrate the reissue. The'll be in Boson at the House of Blues on September 24. Their previously unreleased song titled “Go Man Go” which comes with a video. The story on the Pichfork website It’s more impressive work from Evil Felipi with a simple but effective video for “Shadow Work” off their album Into the Ivy of a few months ago. Capturing a few different backdrops is enough to transmit the break up situation the lyrics depict. We love those guitar chords with the open strings. In the verse the open string is in the bass later the chords sit with the open high strings. This is a good reminder to give the Into the Ivy album more attention. We’ve featured the group Baby Got Back Talk a few times here. They're from Brooklyn and have a generally pop punk sound but with a strong melodic accent. They are very much a modern band that deals with current issues. This video for “I’m Sorry I’m A Moron, but Also, Help” from their Wince. Repeat EP, was shot in one long take. The lead singer's wearing a Muffs t-shirt. It comes out on July 21. Nick Cave and Debbie Harry pair up to sing “On the Other Side” from the upcoming fourth instalment of the Jeffrey Lee Pierce Project series which is new interpretations of songs by The Gun Club's late singer/songwriter Jeffrey Lee Pierce. This instalment is titled The Task Has Overwhelmed Us. “On the Other Side” is an acoustic number only performed live by Pierce a few times. But this isn't the first time they've done this - previously, Nick Cave and Debbie Harry did "Free to Walk" for 2009’s We Are Only Riders, “The Breaking Hands” for 2012’s The Journey Is Long, and “Into the Fire” for 2014’s Axels and Sockets. This latest fourth installment will be released on September 29. It's on Glitter House Records and you can pre-purchase here. A full list of songs and artists on this album are at the Brooklyn Vegan website RADIO...... Joanie on WMBR’s Late Risers Club played the song “For What Reward” by Les Thanes from Edinburgh, Scotland. it sounded very Lyres-like. It's from a self-titled 4 song EP out now. The other songs are less like the Lyres, but still organ topped garage. It's on the Roque label.
To hear Joanie’s Monday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page hit the LRC show for Monday 6/26. NEW MUSIC/CDs...... Cheap Kiss are from Barcelona. They have Geoff Palmer playing on their song “Bowery Boys (Do You Remember Joey Ramone?)". This is off an album of the same title soon to come out. We’re always game for a song about the Ramones. The song is a Ramones sound alike, which suits the subject. The two previous songs from the upcoming album are also cool punk. “Gimme Some Dope” is only a little more than the title, very minimal. “Shy Girl” hits a sweet punk spot too and has a short dialog clip from David Lynch’s Mulholland Drive to add to the coolness. We have it in our Top Ten Songs.
Rebuilder have their new album Local Support on Bandcamp. Two songs are up for listening now. “Hold On” is a gorgeous thing. They have a video for this that we featured a few weeks ago. The Bandcamp audio is a better quality sound than the video and that perked up our ears. On Bandcamp we could appreciate the short synth back up that kicks in after the chorus for a juicy hook. The band has always dealt with issues that we are living through. When they sing the phrase “waking feeling awful” it makes you nod in agreement. They make the point that things are changing fast and to “hold on, we can’t go back.” They are trying to convince someone else while trying to convince themselves. Their totally sincere delivery makes it real. This is truly an inspiring song for all of us now. The recording is full and powerful. That carries to the other released song “Another Round.” The vocals have an appealing urgency. They sound like they are double tracked and that really gives them that extra power. We have it in our Top Ten Songs.
Rum Bar Records has scooped up JJ & the Real Jerks into their roster. The group has been active since 2009 in LA. They have a bunch of recordings out there - here's their Bancamp page. Rum Bar has a 17 cut album titled Rat Beach. The title cut is on Bandcamp now. It’s a Ramones type rocker but there is a sharper edge that shows more straight rock influences. The lyrics are about how kids used to collect sea shells but now collect needles…it’s a Skid Row Summer don’t you know. It’s a suitable punk rock summer song. We assume that the rest of the album lives up to this and we want to hear that. We have it in our Top Ten Songs.
We really enjoy these acoustic vignettes Frank Rowe is slipping onto his Spotify page. The latest is “You, Kinda.” Frank says he sees this as the “theme from an imaginary sitcom.”
