John Keegan did two excellent shows in succession and he had to drive a few miles to do it. Friday 6/24, he went to Geno's in Portland, ME then on Saturday he went to Wellfleet, on the Cape, for the Rockin’ Dune Tunes. So we have a video slide show where he mashes up the two shows. Geno’s had Tiger Bomb and Gene Dante and the Future Starlets and Wellfleet had Tsunami of Sound, Angry Debutantes (see the photos with their huge beehive hairdos), Andy California, and Margaret Garrett. In true rock and roll fashion, the cops broke up the Rockin’ Dune Tunes show at 11:15 pm. Shiny Beast and Atlantic Thrills never got to play. The slideshow soundtrack is "Crystal Pier", an original Tsunami of Sound tune written by drummer Rick Sanger. John played in bands for both of those gigs. At Geno's Kenne HIghland's Airforce was also onthe bill. You can read about it and see a photo of John on stage in Kenne Highland's column from July 4th. And in Wellfleet Crow Follow also played. And Happy Anniversay to The Midway Cafe, our favorite club in town!! The Midway celebrates 35 years later this month with "35 and Still Alive" - and we are so glad they are still doing it!!! They are having a three day celebration Friday July 29 - Sunday July 31. Check out the gig listings below for more info and links. We featured the Nervous Eaters' “Wild Eyes” song/video last week. This week critic Jim Sullivan revealed that he wrote the liner notes for the Eaters' upcoming album. He also states that four more singles will be released before the album comes out in November. And don't frget Nervous Eaters Single Release with Robin Lane & Linnea's Garden are at the Brighton Music Hall this Friday July 15th!! Somerville Art Beat is this coming Saturday July 16th 11AM to 10 Pm in Davis Square. There is a ton of stuff going on but music wise there's Tiffy at 2:30at the Elm Street Stage and Dutch Tulips at 9PM at Seven Hills Park Stage. See gig listings below for Art Beat links. It’s sticker shock with Blondie’s vinyl box set. Against the Odds: 1974-1982. It’s $406.00 on Amazon The Super Deluxe Collector's Edition presents their first 6 albums expanded to include over 4 dozen demos, alternate versions, and outtakes - plus, a 120-page discography and a 144-page hardback book. There’s a treasure trove of leads for the garage fan in the book Five Years Ahead of My Time: Garage Rock from the 1950s to the Present. You might think you know everything about garage but author Seth Bovey digs deep. He gets to another layer most will not know. In the original garage era he hits all the obvious bands and gives some perspective and short analysis along with it. Then he delves down and spotlights some obscurities. We’re lucky in the computer age to be able to hear the music of the groups he mentions with a short search on YouTube. Another valuable chapter is on garage music around the world. It’s a revelation to get the stories and band names from Japan, New Guinea and elsewhere. Bovey then tells the tale of the garage revival in the 80s. We gained renewed appreciation of Greg Shaw and the effect that his Who Put the Bomp magazine and record label had on the rise of garage during the punk era. The only Boston band that gets attention here is DMZ/Lyres. He has a DMZ promo photo in the book. Here and in the rest of the book the story might be familiar to you but it’s still a good run down of the facts and reminds you of the overall arc of how things happened. The book came out in 2019. There’s more on the book on the Pop Diggers website Here it is on Barnes & Noble
We found a mention of the Boston scene in Jeff Tweedy’s (Uncle Tupelo, Wilco) autobiography Let’s Go (So We Can Get Back) from 2018. Uncle Tupelo’s first recording was done at Fort Apache in Roxbury with producers Sean Slade and Paul Kolderie. There’s a little on Sean and Paul in Tape Op magazine. Because the band heard gunshots outside the studio they decided to sleep in some nights. They liked Sean and Paul. They were like “cool older brothers, but they still knew when to crack the whip.” The band give them a lot of credit. “Thanks to Sean and Paul, in just ten days we became a real band. We left believing we were good. They told us we were, and it became so." Here’s the book at Brookline Booksmith VIDEOS...... You might have gone to the beach so far this summer but did you get to a “Goth Beach”? That’s what Walter Sickert & His Army of Broken Toys is singing about. At his beach Robert Smith, Siouxsie Sioux and Elvira show up. Among Legends, on Little Rocket Records, are from Ontario, Canada and have a string a albums under their belt. They've been compared to Alkaline Trio. This video/song “Magnolia” is about a break up that the couple is trying to do without anger. There's lots of change ups which give the guitarists and drummer chances to jump start the song a few times. We love the drummer. Those start up rolls are killer. The vocalist has a bit of emo in the voice and he delivers the vocals with power ... and you can understand most of the words, which is useful, because the songs have plentiful lyrics. Their new album, Take Good Care, is on Bandcamp and it's full of similar hard hitting punk. Their song “Baywatch” depicts the characters who work on Bay St. in Toronto. It paints a picture in a minute ten seconds flat. RADIO...... Carmelita did her most recent Bay State Rock show with some new equipment and boy could you notice the upgrade!! Her voice had in studio quality. She played “Pete Lost the Beat” by Joe Gittleman, the Mighty Mighty Bosstones bassist and songwriter. John Lynch of Watts is on the track. It was some MMB style ska that shows that he has something to give after the demise of the Bosstones. She played Jim Lough’s “You” a sharp tune that's also a fund raiser for progressive candidates in the upcoming elections. The track is on Bandcamp Anngelle Wood's most recent Boston Emissions was curated by Bleu, who will be at the Sinclair (August 27) celebrating the 20th anniversary of his album Redhead. Anngelle interviews Bleu and he pics the songs you hear. He fills up the show with a lot of local music through the years: Gigolo Aunts, Rocket Science, Damone, Bang Camero, The Rudds, Expanding Man and plenty of Bleu. It’s a trip back to the late 90s in the Boston music scene.
Brian Young is having a busy week with his band and radio show. A Crash Course for the Ravers is going back in the studio and will be inviting guests to come in. If you’re in a band you should contact him at WMFO or on the Crash Course for the Ravers Facebook page. His band the Thigh Scrapers has a new CD finished (titled simpley The Thigh Scrapers) and delivered and they have a new YouTube channel. The YouTube channel has some live vids and the video for their last song released “8 Ball Shifter” is posted also.
On Joanie’s WMBR’s Late Risers Show on Thursday she played a new Michael Monroe song: “Young Drunks & Old Alcoholics” from the new album Live Too Fast To Die Young ... and it’s a ripper!! Anyone who's seen Monroe at his Boston shows will never forget them. We saw him at the Middle East Show in 2016. At that show people we all talking about the show he did at Great Scott’s a few years earlier. Monroe always has a top notch band and that goes for his records too.
PODCASTS......... Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico interviews Joe Nelson of Trust Records. Trust Records is releasing The Kids Will Have Their Say by SSD. That’s just one of the classic punk albums for the label but Joe explains that re-releasing classic punk albums is their reason for being. Right now they have records by The Circle Jerks and 7 Seconds. According to Nelson the label has big and long time plans.
NEW MUSIC/CDs...... Geoff Palmer has a new song “Stuck With You” on a new compilation album Punk Rock Raduno Vol.5. This is another primo Palmer effort. Catchy as hell and with so many recording extras that it sound full and robust and there just a nice spirit to it. BTW Punk Rock Raduno is a live, fiour day, all ages, free festival in Bergamo, Italy. It's this week - July 14-17, 2022. Geoff Palmer and Kurt Baker are perfromign this year along with a ton of other international punk/pop bands. It's also live streamed so you can watch it from whereever you might be!! Check it out here Punk Rock Raduno and here is their Bandcamp page with digital albums of all the last 5 Punk Rock Radunos.
The Gypsy Moths just released their new album Following the Races this week. The thing that gets our attention is their songwriting. Off the four songs that you can hear on Bandcamp there's “Effortlessly” and “Relieveo.” Those are two examples of their ear catching craftsmanship. The album has nine cuts in all.
The Dollyrots are coming to Sonia on Sunday 7/17 and they just released a digital single. The a-side is a revamping of “Alone Again (Naturally)” the sad suicide song by Gilbert O’Sullivan from 1972. Even though they pump it up with power chords and speed it up, it still holds an emotional tug if you listen to the words, which are clear. “That’s Not Even All” has the same sonic attack as “Alone Again” which makes us think that the live show will be damn good.
