"Just For You - new song by the Nervous Eaters

It’s always the biggest news; a new single by the Nervous Eaters. It's “Just For You”. Steve says it’s about his first girlfriend. Cataldo can weave his memories into magic. We’ve heard that done so many times.

This recording has that rich pop sound with ringing 12 string guitar that marks this whole album. There's some piano on this cut which is their latest instrumental addition. There’s a special feeling that Steve and the Eaters always seem to get on every song. It’s part sweet memory that comes through. mixed with the playing that is pure Eaters.

This week Joanie Lindstrom played “Scream” another song from the new album. That one is really revved up.

Ever notice metal heads contorting their faces during a particularly intense riff? That’s called the ‘stank face’. Metal Injection magazine have an article explaining why that happens. Heck, even fans just throwing the devil horns do the face…and there’s a whole story about the devil horns too.

Metal Injection mag gets a scientist to link it to “both a dopamine surge from a powerful riff and the dissonant sound of a distorted guitar”. He elaborates but even after reading it we don’t know why you do it except it feels good…that would be the short story.

VIDEOS......

The Pixies are releasing a follow up to the Doggerel album: The Night the Zombies Came will be released on October 25. But their new song “Chicken” is out and with a video.

The song has a slow tempo that always seems to work with the band. The lyrics mention feeling like a chicken with its head cut off and being like an actor in a zombie movie. There’s an air of desperation about the whole song. The video has a figure made from rough rocks that slowly crawls forward…so, ya know it is all creepy.

A little more about the album and a song list on Pitchfork

Pixies did a three song set at Current Studio in Minneapolis. The did “Chicken”, “Vegas Suite” and “You’re So Impatient”. We have the video above right. There you can see the Pixies latest bass player Emma Richardson.

Nick Cave

Nick Cave released the second song from his next album Wild God. “Long Dark Night” has a lot in common with "Frogs" the first song he previewed.

“Long Dark Night” is slow and majestic. The piano is the main instrumentation. That along with Nick’s deep voice goes a long way. The lyrics are biblical. They come from the poem “Dark Night of the Soul” by the 16th-century Spanish poet St. John of the Cross. More about the song on Pitchfork.

RADIO......

On Wednesday’s Late Risers Club Mark Francis played "Leather Jacket Boy" by Big Tears. It was a raw garage tune with a high school feeling in the words, maybe something you would have heard decades ago. The song is part of their EP Love & Misery.

They follow up on the retro high school feeling in another song, “Fuckboy”. The title and subject matter brings the retro feeling crashing into life today.

The EP is on Bandcamp Love & Misery and below is the song “Fuckboy”. Mark couldn’t play that over the radio.

Another group Mark spun was Black Surfboards doing “Board To Death”. Like Big Tears they're garage and have retro influences, in this case surf. “Board To Death” has a trebly Fender guitar sound up to the halfway mark where things get distorted and much louder. Their EP is Summer Heat Up. We liked the song “She Got To Me”. Again they start with the surf sound but by the two minute mark they throw it away and get loud and sounding modern.

Black Surfboard and Big Tears are examples of young bands getting inspiration from the early sixties but adding completely modern elements.

Summer Heat Up is on Bandcamp The song “She Got To Me” is embedded below.

To hear Mark’s whole show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Wednesday 7/24.

On Thursday LRC Joanie Lindstrom played a local hardcore outfit Public Death. With that name you know it’s not going to be all roses. This group is fast brutal hardcore. Songs go from four seconds to a minute and thirty nine seconds.

It may be unusual to label a band with four second songs as articulate but even these short songs jam in plenty of lyrics and they are as sharp as they are angry. “Gatekeeper”, one of the many screeds against those that control, has this line we like: “Book burning looks much nobler when you're not using real fire”.

Here’s an example of lyrics in “Denounce Me For Your Sins":

“Sophist clown, talking down
Synthetic gravitas
You're the "thinker" no one wants
Your head, an empty cavitas”

“Hanging Around”, the song that Joanie played has the lines:

"I'm sick of this misery,
Sickness and tyranny
Psychotic oligarchs
And kakistocracy"

Kakistocracy is a word for our times. It means a government that is ruled by the least suitable, able, or experienced people.

We have “Hanging Around” embedded below but if you go for the hardcore don’t miss this Public Death album (on Bandcamp )

Joanie also played “Banned From the USA” from Amsterdam group The Covids. It’s based on a true story. Some band members were blocked at the border as they were trying to start a USA tour. It’s a raw rocker and it’s even more fun in the video version!

To hear Joanie’s whole show go to the WMBR archive page and hit the Late Risers Show for Thursday 7/25.

PODCASTS.........

This Tuesday Skybar will have on Happy Little Clouds on his Rising show for an interview. Skybar says he will inquire about the bands beginnings and their latest single titled “Lungs”. The Rising show is on WMFO 93.5 FM on Tuesdays at 8pm. Otherwise go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8pm on Wednesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

Blowing Smoke interviews Nat Freedberg who has a new album out this week. We reviewed that in last weeks news. Nat’s first band The Flies started in 1981 and he has a good perspective on the Boston music scene at that time.

Nat produced that first Del Fuegos single, we really never registered that. He has a very realistic view of his success and its limits. Nat revealed that the Bags (bags drummer Jim Janota, is Nat’s drummer) are recording a new album (at Woolly Mammoth), that reunion is on!!

Nat talked about recording with Ducky Carlisle. He'll play at the Ducky Carlisle Memorial at the Brighton Music Hall on August 11.

Nat admits to being a bit mellower these days. He has no need to rock as hard. He still has loads of style and humor though.

We went looking the punk in this week’s Sonic Overload by Al Quint. There was a great set with The Table, New Hearts (mod), Nasty Facts (“Drive My Car”), General Foodz (Boston group – one single 1980) and Broken Idols (Boston band).

The General Foodz song “Be So Funny” and The Broken Idols “Life Sux” are not easily available. Here they are below.

Al played a furious hardcore set beginning with Negative FX and including DYS (“Wolfpack Bible”) and Adrenalin OD. He played a final set that checked off a lot of boxes for us. It began with Pastiche doing “Talk Show”, man that song was everywhere in its day, Plastic Bertrand with “Super Cool”, The Flying Lizards’ “TV” and ending the show with The Records’ “Starry Eyes”.

You can hear the whole set , with hardcore galore, at Sonic Overload

Miracle Blood have an updated a collection of noise bands on a Spotify playlist. It’s a great way to get up to speed on these groups. You can’t find a more brutal and loud collection of music than this. They do have the latest Jesus Lizard song on there too.

We liked the churning “Plastic” by Tunic, the thumping “The Knot” by Intercourse, the fast moving “Hieronymus Bosch Was Right” by Whores and the ground scorching “Slumber Party Pt 1” by BedTimeMagic. That’s just drawing from the first third of this 62 song playlist.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Shiverlane single Already Dead album

It’s no secret we loved “Aeroplane Driver” by Shiverlane. The group is revving up to release their eight song album Sketches from the Departure Lounge in September.

“Little English Pleasures" is the leading single of the album. It has the charm and sound we loved in “Aeroplane Driver.” There's some impish joking going on with the lyrics. The group said the lyrics are about “the pleasure gardens of 18th century London.” One line seems like, “we do the Vauxhall trot, like royalty, but we’re not” while the drums stamp out a stately rhythm. They seem like they're having a ball producing these songs. We’re captivated.

We have this on our Top Ten songs

Boston’s Already Dead have been racking up impressive singles since 2022. Now they have the 14 song album Something Like A War. Here they show all sides of the band. They play punk hardcore with ska, rap and have some acoustic turns.

The first half of the album is mostly the loud hardcore punk. Lyrics show the band to righteously angry. They're sticking up for the working man always under someone’s boot. All these songs are power packed, sonically, and lyrically. The first five songs starting with “The Spirit of Massachusetts Ave” come crashing out with undeniable force.

"The ROMEO Club" mentions “Charlie’s Kitchen in Harvard Square.” We loved hearing that.

The recording job is a thing of beauty. It was recorded at the Bridge Sound and Stage in Cambridge and mastered by Stephen Pettyjohn.

Owen Guns live album One Step Closer album Rob Moss and SKin Tight Skin

The Owen Guns from Australia are out to offend. Their sound is raw, at it’s best, in the studio. On their new live album they are offensive constantly and their sound is even more unruly. They know what they are doing, which is why the album is titled Warts and All.

Everything is peppered with fuck this, fuck that…”Shut the fuck up” and “go fuck yourself” are actually lyrics. Which is to say this is a lot of fun! We recommend it!

We featured Wilkes Bar, PA One Step Closer and their last album Songs For the Willow. This is hardcore emo. The songs slam out with the singer in screamo mode a lot of the time. They have that emotional punk of locals Actor|Observer and Oh the Humanity.

Their new album All You Embrace is more of the same. We're going to embed “Leap Years” but there are many songs on the same level as this one. The album is on Bandcamp

Rob Moss and Skin Tight Skin have their latest single that they've faithfully released monthly for a while now.

“Basement Party” is both an instruction and celebration of the phenomenon. It features Tony Reed of the heavy stoner rock band Mos Generator on lead guitar. (Mos Generator have released loads of material.) Reed rips out a worthy solo.
