Jamie Reid who made the instantly recognizable ransom note art work for the cover of the Sex Pistols album and several singles died this week.. Reid's collage of God Save the Queen is one of the most influential images of its time. Reid was a friend of Malcolm McLaren at Art School. He was heavily influenced by the Situationist movement It’s one of those inexplicable or fortunate twists of fate where a visual artist latches up with another discipline, in this case a musical movement, and they have a symbiotic relationship. There’s more on Reid in this CNN story, in Vogue magazine and in the NY Times
Jane Hudson of Jeff and Jane/The Rentals now has a tarot deck that uses her paintings. The deck is of the Major Arcana which is the first 22 cards of the deck. It’s a good way to get some of Jane’s distinctive and colorful op-art work. You can see some of the images and get the cards at the Wild Soul River website. Because we’re in America it was gonna happen ... there was a shooting at a punk house show in Minneapolis on Friday night. One person, who the police think was targeted, was killed and at least six others wounded. Witnesses say two guys walked up the alley to the backyard of the venue and started shooting then fled. Story in the Star Tribune Local punks are claiming this was a hate crime because the event was a queer punk show. The only upside to this would be that friends have set up two crowdfunding pages: one for the injured victims and one for his partner Caitlin. Almost $100,000 has been raised in less than 24 hours!! VIDEOS...... Liz Borden of Lizzie Borden and the Axes went out to Hollywood to take up an acting career. She's been in a bunch of films. Now one can be seen on Amazon Prime. It's The 3rd Annual Matricher Falls Internationel Film Festival. Liz says “This film is to film festivals what Spinal Tap is to rock bands.” We watched it and we think that nails it. Liz plays a concession stand worker, she seems like a natural. She has a real presence and persona. It’s a smaller part but she stamps it. Meanwhile Liz still has the music going and has a deal with Code 213 records to record some new material. To see the film (it costs $1.99 to rent) go to Amazon The Linda Lindas have a new song/video. “Resolution/Revolution” shows some development for the group. It’s much more confident sounding. They took influence from Pantera and Judas Priest. It’s not as heavy as those groups and it has a strong melodic element in the chorus that’s more pop leaning. RADIO...... Mook started Friday’s Late Risers Club with Gumm's “Slogan Machine.” We like the message of this song along with its raw punk sound. If you like the song the rest of the album is right in the same ballpark. Here's the video Gumm is from Chattanooga, TN which makes them the first band we ever heard from there.
Another song that stuck out was “Cut Your Hair” by Nuclear Tourism. It sounded like a rougher Artic Monkeys effort. It has a fun video The group is from Athens, Georgia. Here’s their Bandcamp page Here's their Insta page and FB page.
Brian Young had the VA Va Voodoos as a guest on A Crash Course for the Ravers. The group is from Troy, NY. They play a primitive garage style. Brian played nine songs so you get a good idea of how they sound. They were in town to play the Square Root on Saturday along with Brian’s Thigh Scrapers and Soul Cake who were also on the show playing a live set. The Billygoons would like to know they do a cover of their favorite “The Crusher.” They also do a cover of “Liar, Liar” by the Castaways. There’s a lot to catch up with on their Bandcamp page and here’s their Facebook page.
To listen to that show go to the WMFO Schedule page and the Crash Course for the Ravers show at 1pm Saturday then hit the archive button. PODCASTS......... Here’s this week’s Elastic Glam Breakfast Show. They have Sweet doing “Changes.” and the latest Suzi Quatro song “Shine A Light” which is a duet with KT Tunstal. We liked the bouncy “Lay Your Love on Me” by Racy. The familiar “Amateur Show” by Sparks sounded so good. A lot of punks were listening to glam in 1974 because main stream rock had gone wimpy. That ties in with the song Elastic Glam played this week by Silverglam titled “1974.” That was the year that the Boston scene started with Willie Loco, Reddy Teddy, Fox Pass and Third Rail. Elastic Glam also supports the Trevor Project. They give help and resources to the LGBTQ community.
Al Quint’s Sonic Overload always gives you plenty of hardcore to digest. We really like the punk sets he plays too. This week he opened with the Swell Maps doing “Let’s Build a Car.” One set he played: Jayne County and the Electric Chairs – “Rock ‘n Roll Resurrection,” Poles – “CN Tower”, Eater – “Outside View.” They played that “CN Tower” to death on the radio in 1977. Eater has been getting much attention these days as people come to appreciate their raw punk.
Another set was: Orchestral Maneuvers in the Dark –
“Enola Gay”, URINALS – “Sex”
and The Girls – “Jeffrey I Hear You.” That
Girls song, wow!! It’s just more amazing as time goes by. Hear that below.
Quint also played the Art Yard song “The Law” which sounded fine too. You can hear the whole show on the Sonic Overload web page. NEW MUSIC/CDs...... The Winter Project has three EP’s on Bandcamp. Now they've upgraded to a 10 song album titled Chasing the Light. They have five previously released songs along with five new ones. They open with one of our very favorite songs “Scars Above.” It's a perfect opener because it introduces you to Tim McDonald’s voice. Tim has an everyman persona that comes across as experienced. He is not world weary but more world wary. Tim’s voice gives heft to all the lyrics and that makes this album special. The arrangements don’t have many frills. This is the sound of experienced musicians taking care of the songs above all. The prereleased songs include “Brotherhood” which is about playing in a band, imagine that, and “Taste the Color of Your Lipstick” which is a very sexy song. With the new songs they bring in some different styles. “Grounded” has a harmonica accompaniment that makes the song stand out. It also has an Alt-country influence. “Smile When You Wake” is even more country but still with a rock sound. “Lenny’s on the Roof” goes further afield still with its Irish punk style a la Dropkick Murphys. There isn’t a lot of push or splashy posts on social media with this album but don’t let it (or this group) get by you!!
It only takes the Cyanide Pills 30 seconds into their first song “The Kids Can’t Be Trusted With Rock and Roll” on their new album Soundtrack to the New Cold War to get a very Ramones like chorus. In another minute they musically quote “Day in the Life” by the Beatles and then brag in the lyrics that they are ripping off the famous group and taking the money. “Do You Wanna Go Out Tonight” is a perfect Ramone song title and they do run it though the Ramone paces but still they put some of themselves in it. There’s so much here (to begin with 16 songs); lots of melodic hooks incased in a punk crunch. They are punk but borrow from other eras of rock. “It’s Over” sounds like a 50’s rock tune. “Day After Day” is as close to the perfect pop punk ideal as you could imagine. “It Won’t Be Long” starts with a gong. Why?, don’t know, but it has so many nice moments we like in it. There’s not a bad song in the bunch. If you haven’t heard the Cyanide Pills this is the time to correct that. A little more about the album here on Lounder Than War website
