John Keegan took in the low key vibes at the Sunday stripped down show at the Worthen House in Lowell to see The Darlings (Simon Ritt and Kelly Knapp) with Linda Viens and Dan Coughlin of Girl With A Hawk. John reminds us that “Lowell is closer, cheaper and cooler than you remember. ”
Toad in Porter Square gets a new owner who wants the club to be just what it is! How’s that for a dream come true? The club was up for sale and an unknown buyer who the current owner described as, “someone who has been to Toad “a million times” and loves the room”. The club and Christopher’s, the restaurant next door, sold for three million. Next time you find yourself saying nothing is any good anymore and no one cares anymore, remember how Toad got sold and remained what it is. The story is in the Globe if you can get by the paywall Cambridge Day also has the story. They add that JJ Gonson of Once looked at the Club but felt it wasn’t right for her.
Stingray Body Art tattoo & piercing next to O’Brien’s on Harvard St. has closed. The business model was no longer working because of the changes from Covid. It happened all of a sudden this last week. It’s so familiar to those walking to O’Brien’s. Boston.com if you can by the paywall
We don’t think there is such a thing as an official Punk Rock Week but there is according to the Boston Public Library. Sure, we’ll go along with that. To celebrate that they are having a week (September 16 to 22) of Punk activities at the Parker Hill Library which is easily accessible by T to Brigham Circle. Here's what they've got going on: September 16 Saturday - they have our faves Punk Rock Aerobics September 18 Monday - it’s Make Your Own Punk Outfit – Use fabric markers to create the punk DIY t-shirt Bring your own t-shirt to wreck or use one of ours! September 19 Tuesday - they have Button Making ... make your own band button! September 20 Wednesday - Vinyl Record Paintings - The record is your canvas and you take your masterpiece home September 21 Thursday - Feminist Zine Making Workshop September 22 Friday - the movie Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains (1:00 PM – 2:45 PM) That’s pretty good! More info on the Parker Hill Library website The Boston Public Library also has a Zine collection that has over 1000 zines. They are distributed at eight libraries. The list and more info at the BPL webpage
Crow Follow has been signed to Rock Garden Records. Crow Follow includes BGN's photographer extraordinaire John Keegan on sax!
Mad Painter has signed to Epictronic Records, they will release Splashed the bands second album on October 20th. The band which includes Kenne Highland, BGN’s Kenne@Large columnist, goes their own way with many influences from the sixties and seventies. Mad Painter website
Brett Milano had an article in the Boston Herald about this week’s reunion of Treat Her Right at Sally O’Brien’s in Somerville. Treat Her Right were early progenitors of what became alt country. Mark Sandman and Billy Conway later of Morphine were in the group, along with David Champagne and Jim Fitting. They were club staples in the early 80 and got plenty of play on local radio. You can read that article here. VIDEOS...... Geoff Palmer slipped out a video of the song “Give It Up” which is leading to an album release on October 20 on Stardumb Records. Geoff has our favorite line up with Zack Sprague on drums and Kurt Baker on bass. There’s a lot of repeating “Give it up, now.” After a few listens you feel like he owns the phrase now. The video was posted on the Power Popaholic website. They have five other worthy pure pop cuts that you can check out. “I’m Starting A Band” by Roger Joseph Manning, Jr. (Lickerish Quartet, Jellyfish) is gorgeous. It gets close to Van Dyke Parks territory. RADIO...... Tim Kelly did the Tuesday Late Risers Club this last week. He played “Say It Out Loud” by the Cyanide Pills of their current album Soundtrack to the New Cold War which we are trying to spread the word on too! Here it is on Spotify Then he found “No Where To Hide” by the Giant Robots from Lisbon, Portugal. It's a a fuzz and organ rocking piece. We’re suckers for something that sounds like that. It’s very much in the Fuzztones and Chesterfield Kings territory. This is just a single, we’ll be interested in hearing the rest of the album titled Fuzz You!
Tim played “Tout Est Meillieur” a Bush Tetras song from the album They Live In My Head released in July titled. They sound better than ever these days. Here’s the album on Bandcamp
Last Tuesday 8/29 on Skybar’s Rising show he had Key of Caustic on for an interview. The band is one of the few that started at the same time as Covid started and was able to grow and get some attention despite that. The Jacklights are another band that had the same circumstances. The band seemed so assured from the beginning and the interview reveals that the members had former band experience. Hearing a few songs in a row by them shows their appeal. They are punk yet tuneful. We love “Watch It Burn.”
They talked about how they approached their new album. Their idea was to capturing a vintage punk sound while being up-to-date. They also talked about getting and working with Paul Kolderie who has worked with Radiohead, Pixies, Hole and many more notables.
To hear the show– after that go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8 to 10 pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.
Skybar is following up this week with an interview with Rick Barton of the Outlets/Dropkick Murphy’s/Everybody Out and Continental. Rick can be very frank. He’s not a shy guy. Tune in Tuesday at 8pm on WMFO 91.5 for that. Continental will be at The Magic Room in Norwood THIS Friday for the Rum Bar Records Show with U-Ey At The Buoy, Stop Calling Me Frank, and Jay Allen and the Archcriminals - tickets here!!
Also on WMFO this time on Mike on the Mic show at 9am Saturday morning had Randy Black in talking exclusively about Limbo Race. The name came out of the Catholic concept of ‘limbo.’ The group went from a three piece to a five piece during its four or five year lifespan. They won the Rumble in 1982. And Randy doesn’t just talk about Limbo Race…he sings about it. He does a live version of “The Ballard of Limbo Race.” The first song played on the show was “Population Center” and when you hear that band sound it whips you back to the day. Limbo Race had that post punk thing going. Just the one song “Down and Backwards” (Song on YouTube) would make any band’s career notable. Listening to “Ina’s Song” again (Song on YouTube), , one is stunned by the intensity of it. “Fluids” (Song on YouTube) shows the band in all its strengths, the impeccable band sound and the lyrics that shake you up like “I suck your tongue” and “I drink your blood". Then the Limbo Race was all over. Beyond Limbo Race’s amazing catalog Randy has The Dr. Black’s Combo material and now the Heathcroppers growing output. This was a reminder, if we needed it, of how much great music Randy has created. To listen to that show go to the WMFO Schedule page and the Mike on the Mic show at 9am Saturday then hit the archive button.
Tim and Judy Sprague from Crow Follow were guests on A Crash Course for the Ravers. Brian Young has been playing the group faithfully from the beginning. Judy grew up in DC and Tim is from Brooklyn. Tim went to Harvard and got into the local punk scene while there. Crow Follow have an album coming out in December. They played a few songs from that new album. “In Between” especially had that haunting atmosphere the band cultivates.
To listen to that show go to the WMFO Schedule page and click the A Crash Course for the Ravers show at 1pm Saturday then hit the archive button. PODCASTS......... The busy and productive Dan Kopko was interviewed on WFMO’s Born Too Late Podcast. He talked a lot about his solo Danny the K record. You learn a lot about the origins of that record. We would never have guessed but the “Roller Derby Girl” music was inspired by a few Clash songs. Next up Dan is hoping for a new Shang Hi Los album for early next year and some more music with Sal Baglio.
Along with the interview are 20 songs from Dan’s projects and some songs that influenced him.
Here’s this week’s Elastic Glam Breakfast Show. It’s the mix of classic glam cuts (Quatro, Sweet, T Rex) with new groups continuing the tradition. Elastic Glam also supports the Trevor Project. They give help and resources to the LGBTQ community.
Al Quint started his Sonic Overload podcast this week with a set of songs by The Effigies in remembrance of John Kezdy who died this week. Kezdy was a remarkable man. First he was the singer of the amazing The Effigies, that alone is an accomplishment. Later - ”Kezdy attained degrees from Northwestern and DePaul College of Law, and worked as a prosecutor at the Illinois State’s Attorney Office in Kankakee and as a bureau chief of the Office of the Illinois Attorney General” according to Yahoo News. A year ago he survived a mass shooting! He died while riding his bike when he crashed into the back of an Amazon delivery truck that was in the bike lane. Then Al did a set for the back to school crowd. Songs: Wrecks- "High School Anthem", Red Cross - "I Hate My School", Replacements - "Fuck School", Vains - "School Jerks" and Dissidents - "Detention."
Al also has the knack of picking out some songs that you haven’t heard in a long while. One this week was Pigbag doing “Papa’s Got A Brand New Pigbag.” and the 1981 record by locals Swingers Resort doing “Movies.” Photographer B.C Kagen was in that group.
You can hear the whole show on the Sonic Overload web page NEW MUSIC/CDs...... We talked about this last week, the Already Dead version of the old labor/strike song “Bread & Roses, and here it is now. It’s available on Bandcamp. They do a ripping good job on this. They make this song live again. The thumping punk elements are so inspiring in this context.
Also on WMFO’s Mike on the Mic show that this week (see write up in Radio section) we heard the “The Call” by local band This Day in History. We like that angular riff that underlines the verse and the way the singer delivers the line “I don’t know why” in the chorus. He exaggerates the “why.” It’s an ear worm. We went back to it time and again. We have this on our Top Ten Songs "The Call" is from the band's album Years of Wear & Tear. It has indie music as a start but we hear some post punk attributes in there too. This was especially true in “Tell Me When (It All Goes Wrong)” where the phrase “totally wired” in the lyrics tripped up memories of The Fall. We found this to be a rewarding listen.
We got our copy of the Last Ones’ new 45 “I Don’t Wanna Be Right”/”I Warned Ya” on colored vinyl. These are two 1982 recordings. If you know Boston punk the musician’s names will be more than recognizable. These guys are on many classic recordings - Rick Coraccio, Danny McCormack, Richie Johnson, Michael Quirk, Ricky Carmel and Dean Carmel. This is the real deal – Boston garage punk by the originators, just can’t be beat. It’s on Arcadian Sun Records. Contact them via their Bandcamp page and scoop one of these before they’re gone…it’s a limited supply!! Here's some good shows coming up .....
