Chet's Last Call Documentary

Hey what are you doing this Saturday night? If you are home make sure to watch the Chet’s Last Call Documentary! It will air at 11PM on this Saturday, September 10 on WLVI, Channel 56. Here's the Facebook page for the film.

The Magic Room seemed like the perfect place for that recent Fleshtones show with Glider and Tiger Bomb. Cal Cali has a bunch of photos of that show on a Facebook page. You can check it out here

Lizard Lounge reopens The Lizard Lounge announced that they will re-open after being closed for two and a half years. We’re happy that they were able to hang in there. That’s a long hiatus. The Lizard Lounge has such a unique vibe. They news made the Boston Globe on Wednesday. Lizard Lounge Facebook page

Red on Red is brinbing back their Dress Like a Rock Star Halloween party! It's at the French Club in Waltham on Saturday October 29. Stupidity from Sweden are on the bill and Keith Streng from the Fleshtones will be playing with them. Also on the bill is: Cold Expectations, Andrea Gillis, Justine & The Unclean and Speedfossil. Facebook event page

Jay Scott Henderson died on Sunday morning 9/4. Jay fronted the band Red House. He had a sterling reputation as a guitarist especially on the South Shore. The group played the Boston scene for years. Here's a video clip of a show at Green Street Station from July 1990. YouTube of Red House.

We reviewed Men & Volts return album Amber Supreme last week. It’s on Bandcamp now. They are having their album release show at the Lilypad on Sunday October 9.

Atomic Dimestore Rick Paige gave up his Atomic Dimestore in Hyannis this year. He's been doing fleas markets and conventions to make up for that. Now he will be part of the next Plymouth Punk Rock Market on Sunday, October 9 at the Mayflower Brewery. The Plymouth Punk Rock Market has been adding more vendors. They are all excellent too!!

Closer to home - This year's Boston Hassle Flea Market is happening this coming Sunday Sept 11 at The Cambridge Community Center outside of Central Square. (5 Callender Street) 12:30-6PM.

Chris Doherty of Gang Green Chris Doherty of Gang Green is slowly getting back in action it seems. That is awesome news!! He joined The Gobshites for "Alcohol" at the Plymouth Punk Rock Market and he’s going to do a few songs, backed up the Guns of Brighton, at the Midway on Saturday October 1 at 8pm. The show is a benefit for the Pine Street Inn. Other bands on the bill are Nothing But Enemies and Hagglers. Facebook page

Tsunami of Sound had to cancel their a NYC show at Otto’s Shrunken Head. Rick Sanger fell and hurt himself on the Hi Line. He’s doing OK. Gee ... Surfing they do fine ...but on dry land they have trouble! Tsunami of Sound Facebook page

Creem magazine is back after many years!! They have a print version and a web site. They have some September posts up now. One is a review of Aussie punk. It starts, as it has to, with The Saints, then goes on to Radio Birdman, X, Cosmic Psychos and the Hard-Ons. They get more up to date with Royal Headache from 2011 and then current with Amyl and the Sniffers and Romero.

Royal Headache’s Psychic Episode has a bit of They Might Be Giants “Birdhouse In Your Soul” in it, but is some great punk, none-the-less.

Richard Hell That Creem page on Aussie Rock is here

There's also an article on Richard Hell where they revisit a 1983 interview and rehash it. Hell was involved with the movie Smithereens at that point, not a high point of anyone’s career! You can read that here

They also try to make you think 8 Tracks are somehow cool. No, they never were. Their page on that

The headline in Pitchfork was the story: Bauhaus Cancel Tour as Peter Murphy Enters Rehab. Boston was in that tour at the new MGM Music Hall on September 13. Read it on Pitchfork

BOOKS......

Third Man Books Third Man Books is now taking preorders for Needles & Plastic: Flying Nun Records 1981-1988 by Matthew Goody.

Flying Nun Records was the New Zealand label that released records that filled college radio air time for years. They had groups: The Clean, The Chills, The Verlaines, Tall Dwarfs, The Bats, Look Blue Go Purple, Straitjacket Fits and Bailter Space. This is the first comprehensive history of the label.

You can preorder the book on Third Man Books or get the hardcover special addition (with extra photos and poster) here.

VIDEOS......

The Nervous Eaters continue to knock everyone out. This is a group and management with a plan and they are all business executing it!!

The “Superman’s Hands” video has a concept and it’s done with creativity and enough of a budget to make it look good. The beginning takes imagery from Superman movies to set the scene. It even has text that scrolls out cinema style: “As long as your heart has the capability of love and a true desire to help your fellow man, then any man can possess the strength and dependability of Superman’s hands.”

Nervous Eaters Monsters and Angels Steve starts the song with some twelve string action. That jangle comes in during the choruses. They basically power chord through the versus. Steve also plays a patented searing solo in the middle.

There’s some comic relief too when, with the strength of Superman’s hands, Steve is able to open a stuck pickle jar. That takes power!

This is, in many ways, the Nervous Eaters plus. They're doing some excellent song writing and playing but they have sympathetic support. The recording has depth, detail and that ringing twelve string sounds so brilliant. The quality and creativity that went into the video is obvious.

And to think that this is maybe the halfway point to the final release of the album Monsters + Angels! If you go to the Bandcamp page for the album you can see the song list. One of them is “Last Chance”. So, we have that to look forward too!!

It’s a great time to be a Nervous Eaters fan.

Muck and the Mires are revolting! Revolting against boring music that is! Their new song is titled “Beat Revolution” and it’s the leading song from a new album.

They have the funniest vid where they run around in Colonial Tricorn hats. They sign the bottom of a Bill of Rock and go off to fight…play in order to ‘shake things up’. It’s the usual upbeat contagious Muck music and comes with a fist pumping chorus section that should be a crowd pleaser when done live.

The Tinnitist website did a Mixtape for the weekend featuring 228 songs…at number one is “Beat Revolution”! That list is here

PODCASTS.........

This week Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico interviews everyone’s favorite Richie Parsons of the Unnatural Axe!! Yay we love Richie!!

Richie gives a few Jimmy Harold memories and some of the very early Rat years. Then you get a review of Richie’s bands: Unnatural Axe, Future Dads, Band 19, Tomato Monkey and into his solo material.

As Steeve says Richie is a legend at this point. He’s been involved with Boston punk for decades.

NEW MUSIC/CDs.....

Geoff Palmer song The Downhauls

Geoff Palmer has released two more songs from his project of covering Dee Dee Ramone's Standing in the Spotlight album. Not being fully familiar with the Spotlight album Geoff’s songs have been a revelation. There’s so much personality and musical variety here and that’s based on three songs. “Emergency” we covered a few weeks ago.

“Brooklyn Babe” goes from a doo wop intro to rap to Ramones style pop. Then Palmer slides in a tasty double stop solo, wonderful.

“The Crusher” is a Ramones style song about wrestling.

The thing is, there seems to be so much of Geoff Palmer in this. He’s covering someone else’s whole work but his own playing and personality come through. We can’t wait for the rest!!

We saw The Downhauls in their first gig in 2018. We were impressed. The group is now with Rum Bar Records with a three song EP with one song free to hear on Bandcamp. This is a roundup of previous material. With Rum Bar it’s properly packaged and given attention.

“Convenient Friend” like the group live, is pumped up rocking. The idea with this group seems to be that…rock immediately and keep it going.

The Downhauls are having their EP release show with Duck & Cover, Blame It On Whitman on Friday Sept 16, at Faces Brewery Malden.

Young Hasselhoffs Telamor

When it comes to Rum Bar, you have to ask yourself, where does Lou get these groups? In the case of The Young Hasselhoffs it’s Omaha, Nebraska. Lou has the ear. The album Life Got In The Way has two songs free to hear on Bandcamp. They are well written and well recorded tunes with excellent vocals. It makes you hanker to hear the whole thing, which is the idea of course.

You could write a book on The Atlantics. Following up the stories of the group’s members would take more than a few interesting chapters. Here’s another twist in the tale, Tom Hauk, playing now as Telamor, has released his version of The Atlantics' “Lonelyhearts”.

That is not a small thing to do. People love that song and it’s been played on local radio shows up to the current day since it’s release in 1980. Telamor does a fine job. The vocals, drums and guitars duplicate the original enough to transmit the feel of the song. Tony Goddess does up Fred Pineau’s original solo. Goddess was in the Rudds and Papas Fritas and now has a recording studio (Band-A-Song) in Gloucester.
