Linnea’s Garden's new EP Mirrors coming out next Friday, November 17. The song “Comeback” has been pre-released on Bandcamp. The first thing to strike us about “Comeback” is how familiar we are with Linnea Herzog’s voice and the band sound. It’s always a welcome recognition. The lyrics are very novelistic, if impressionistic with many characters that flash through the story line. Since this is Linnea there is a sexy touch also. The line “You look perfect/With your mouth open wide like you came” is vivid and memorable. The release show for Mirrors is on Friday November 17 at O'Brien's Pub featuring Lovewhip, Catwolf and Hyber. Tickets can be bought at Eventbright -link is below in the Gig Listings...scroll on down.

Well, it's another dead "Boston" club...Sammy's Patio is going to be torn down for what else but luxury condos. They were having some great shows thre too!! Thanks Sammy's, we will miss you!!
Our pal Captain Easychord just got signed to Rock Garden Records. Also just signed are John Powhida and Satch Kerans. BOOKS...... Once a Rocker ... I Gotta Rock ... and now Rock Survivor – it’s Mach Bell’s third book. Mach is in the groove…he rocks, he writes and he tirelessly promotes along the way. From the blurbs it looks like Mach uses a big brush this time and does an overall look at his life. He has ups and downs. He had a motorcycle accident that sounds serious, and then that recent heart attack and then a big boost with his induction into the New England Music Hall of Fame. It’s like a Hollywood movie….oh….you think he has his agent working on that?! In any case Mach would want you to read the book before seeing the movie. What actor would play Mach? Get the book now at Amazon VIDEOS...... The I Want You has a video of the song “My Favorite Dive” that was filmed at the Sligo Pub. Sadly that bar is now closed after 75 years!...gentrification.... What a great idea to film there. The video transmits that feeling of a bunch of regular guys having a pub stay. We talk about their new EP below in the new music section. Because Link Wray was amazing and "Rumble" is timeless, it was punk before there was punk, here's Jimmy Page playing "Rumble" for Link Wray's induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. NEW MUSIC/CDs..... We feature The I Want You’s video for “My Favorite Dive” above. That’s the first song and their new EP of the same name. The band captures those things that typify our, or anyone’s, local music scene. They have that sense of loss of their local watering hole in “My Favorite Dive.” They capture a local radio jock situation in “Overnight Radio.” We like that they sing that they play Bowie as a request but play “I Am The Cosmos” by Chris Bell just for themselves. They celebrate their favorite local band, that just happens to be the Pixies in “The Pixies (Just Pixies). “Doing the Doom” draws up a party scene that has a dark overtone. “Same Fucking Way” has flashes of anger and post Covid depression that are forceful.
Rum Bar Records latest is by Tony Marsico who played with LA’s Plugs. There are two songs online from the five song EP Sleepwalker. One of those is the title tune. The twelve string playing made us immediately think of the Byrds. It’s not just the guitars but the whole package that kept us listening. The songwriting, singing and the arrangement all make it pay off. The other song “Rocket Ship” is a mid-tempo effort that also captures a mood. Marsico proves he has something to give with even just these two songs.
We talked up this band The Owen Guns from Australia a little while ago. They fit into a long history of rude and funny punk bands. Taking on sensitive topics and being offensive can be a go to place for young punk bands especially. Let’s take a look at some of the songs on their current album Monks in Sexyland: “Monk in Sexyland” where they state, “It’s not like he robbed a bank/all he wanted was a wank.” “Stop Making Deadshits Famous” where they go after Elon Musk, Gwyenth Paltrow, Rebel Wilson, Madonna and Kim Kardashian. “Trans Rights are Human Rights” where they call out those who can’t handles Trans Rights. “The Algorithm” where they rank out the Facebook algorithm. And our favorite “And for the Second Time…No” where it’s no for “No, you can’t have a smoke/no, I won’t help you move/ no you can’t sleep on my couch/no, I won’t give you a loan”.
Then there’s people who take punk serious and use it to illuminate the society that we live in. That would be Dead Pioneers from Denver, CO. The songs are really some spoken word on top a punk background. They specify their music as “unapologetically Indigenous.” Greg Deal is a Native American and he makes some very clear and pointed statements that cut deep. It’s eye opening. Greg takes the phrase “We Were Punk First” and makes it to mean that the Native Americans were here in America all along. “Bad Indian” is a favorite piece here. Each song’s words puts forth a point of view we don’t get to hear often enough. This really shows how punk is a very viable art form that continues to be serviceable 45 years after its formation.
We knew that Glam was back when we saw Gene Dante and the Future Starlets and Sidewalk Driver in the clubs in 2008. The Elastic Glam Breakfast show podcast that we have been spotlighting lately has peaked our interest in glam even more, which brings us to the group Clone from Vancouver. The video for the song “Queen” was spectacular. They now have a seven cut album out titled Knock Out Drops Vol.II. The standout song is still “Queen” but everthing drips with glam affectations. We loved it back in 1974 and we love it now. We like the songs “Outta My Head” and “Hold Him Down.”
Call Me Animal: A Tribute to the MC5 by Joecephus and the George Jonestown Massacre has been released. Guest artists include Lydia Lunch, Jello Biafra, Mike Watt, Cherie Currie, J Mascis, Alice Cooper and even Wayne Kramer. There will be a listening party for this on Bandcamp on Monday November 6: “Join Joey Killingsworth and Dik LeDoux the producers of 'Call Me Animal' for a listening party this coming Monday November 6th at 8pm Central Standard Time. They'll be discussing the making of the album, the MC5, the guest stars and field your questions and comments via chat.” Here is the Bandcamp event page to log in. Here is Lydia Lunch singing “I Want You Right Now”.
Jaguero are from Italy and have a new EP called New Love. They tag themselves as harcore/post hardcore as well as punk. They are .... but the vocals which are clear most of the time and double tracked make the songs very accessible. There is a big accent on making the vocal lines melodic. The band keeps everything punk and when it is hardcore it’s not extreme by hardcore standards. This is all to say that it this is a good listen. We are going to leave you with “All I Think About”. If you like that you can follow through with the rest of the EP on Bandcamp
One Step Closer is from Wilkes Barre, PA. Their three song EP Songs for the Willow is about the problems of a year’s worth of touring has caused. The song “Turn To Me” has the band laying down a blistering bed of guitars. The singing is a throat shredding emo. The overall effect is very much like locals Actor/Observer where they throw their emotional baggage at you and you feel it.
Rob Moss played with Government Issue in the 80s and went on to other bands and has done some solo work. He grew up in D.C. but is based in Boston now. He has a new album coming out under the name Rob Moss and Skin-Tight Skin. The first single is “We Just Don’t Know.” Rob’s thing is to have a different guitarist on every track. For “We Just Don’t Know” he has Charles Hanson. He’s featured Sal Baglio and Billy Loosigian and guitarists for bands Wilco, Generation X, Raging Slab, Panther Burns and Foo Fighters. You can find those tracks on Rob’s Bandcamp page
Loose Ties were in the 1986 Rock and Roll Rumble, guitarist Terry Kitchen wrote a book with his Boston rock experiences as the background titled Next Big Thing . Now in 2023 there’s another chance to hear the band as they have released a 5 song EP Dance Party. There are five covers and one original. They do the Monkees’s song “For Pete’s Sake” and “For the Love of Money” originally by the O’Jay’s. They had a wide range of influences.
