The BGN News Archive
We were back at the Regent on Friday, November 24 to see Vincent Straggas' doc Life on the Other Planet about the Boston music scene in the seventies and eighties. We went to the private screening for participants of the film the previous week. For this public premier the theater was sold out! Straggas announced another showing of the documentary on November 19 (mark that in your calendars!!) . The Nervous Eaters began the night with a killer set. It was the first time seeing new member Billy Loosigian! They started with the newer song “End of the World Girl” from Monsters + Angels. The set duplicated most of the songs that are embedded in the film. That was a good idea. They have a great video backdrop that changed for each song showing the album cover for each song they played (see leading photo above and two photos below). That had a huge visual impact. The last song in the set was perennial favorite “Loretta” which delivered the implied promise of Billy and Steve trading solos. We were in heaven with that.
You could tell the audience was primed to see the film, it got applause just for starting to run. Again we appreciated what Vincent Straggas has done by raising the bar on Boston music documentaries with his excellent production, quality of filming and especially editing of the film. More than a few times the fast editing of music, photos and moving graphics would sweep you up.
Willie Alexander gets a big chunk of time mostly shown walking the streets of Gloucester. John Felice wonders how Willie looks so good, “must have been better drugs” he opines. The Nervous Eaters are in it a lot. David Minehan pegs a lot of points in his entertaining way, he provided some excellent gems you should see. Fred Pineau is another one that gets a lot of good lines. Robin Lane has some good perspectives as does Jon Bucher and Didi Stewart of Girls Night Out. Again, The next showing is November 19 at the Regent in Arlington.
Miss Lyn couldn't get enough of the Eaters after The Regent show so she went to the Burren Back Room to see them, along with the Classic Ruins, this past Friday. It was an early show with lots of regulars in the audience. The Classic Ruins are alway a sure bet. Dan McCarthy of the Stigmatics was sitting in on drums. Frank Rowe's song writing is some of THE best in Boston and just like the Eaters, the Ruins' songs hold up just fine over the years and with Carl Biancucci on bass how could they go wrong, right? The Eaters were as good as ever which means GREAT. This new line up is SO are air tight with a huge sound and the deuling guitar leads from Steve and Billy are pretty epic. OK...when's the next gig? Oh, we got some Eaters news too. This version of the band is a bunch of Eaters Alumni back at it, which is more of a guitar band now. The band just finished their third Wicked Cool album, recording with David Minehan at Woolly Mammoth, probably being released sometime early in 2026. It's full of songs from the Rat days, that is because they are tying the LP in with Vincent's Movie which we all saw at the Regent, some pics from the flick will be on the back of the LP...telling everyone about the film as well ...next LP in 2027 will be all new songs. WHOA! That's so great!.
In other news ..... Clif Hanger from The Freeze was hit by a car! His hip was broken and he'll be in the hospital for a month and require lots of rehab. On Wednesday 11/5 he received a hip replacement. He has no safety net and needs funding to get through this.
Salem 66 has been on the radar recently with their compilation album SALT and their music catalog going onto streaming surfaces. They just posted a YouTube video of a live twenty minute set that was broadcast from Newbury Sound over WBCN on 2/26/89 with host Bill Abbate. Their Facebook page. Salem 66 don’t just have their own sound, they bring their own atmosphere too. Judy Grunwald’s voice still evokes mysteries. The Magic Room has announced that Amanda Palmer will be playing the room on Friday, December 19. Tickets are available now.
He’s in a good frame of mind and taking it as a chance to move on and plans to find another show. Meanwhile he is concentrating on the Thigh Scrapers who have some new recordings. Ace of Hearts’ Rick Harte has been showing up at gigs. Can recordings be far behind? Hmm we wonder.... The Gypsy Moths have such an easy way about them and that makes them easy to like. Not that they don’t work. Their double CD album is getting attention just for being so big even before they listen to the music. The Patriot Leger gave them a good amount of print on Wednesday November 5.
They makes it look easy despite the major song writing chore that is involved here. We think recording at Ed’s Barn in Canton contributes to that. The studio has a comfortable feel that's a reflection of way Ed Reimer has made a musician/creative friendly studio.
Yes, The Jam is in there as well as Blondie, Clash,
Buzzcocks, Joe Jackson and Elvis Costello. They have the later Nirvana
in there too. Drummer Bruce Caporal slipped in Rush’s
Chronicles album saying all drummers should have that in their
collection. We were glad to see Connecticut’s Reducers
on the list. They never got their due. Their final pick was the glorious
“Tayter Country” off Joy Rides for Shut Ins by The
Cavedogs. Meanwhile the band just bowed out of two recent shows and is going on a hiatus. They say on Facebook, "The band needs to recharge for a bit and we hope to be back on stage partying with everyone very soon." We wish them well.
Here’s a live vid of TJ Welch and the Wasted doing “Dorchester Girl” at a gig at O’Brien’s. We like the way the gang vocals sound. They have lots of moments like that on their self-titled album released in May and now we know they can deliver it live. Paste magazine has a re-appreciation of the Buzzcock’s Spiral Scratch EP. They make the case that it's one of the most influential EP’s ever. You would get no argument from us, that sounds right.
Of the bands on the Stomp roster we've seen Bike Thiefs a few times at O’Briens and the same with The Penske Files. We caught the Turbo AC’s at the Middle East. Stomp Records has focused on the ska scene – they brand it Skanadian music. Go to their Spotify playlist to hear some of the bands. You can hear Bike Thiefs who we would compare to the Fall.
You get a nice punk hit from Death by Stereo. The ska is good – check out The Planet Smashers
and K-Man and the 45s.
VIDEOS......
The Regent Theatre had another night of interest with its Celebrate Steve Morse concert on Sunday, October 26. The night was a benefit for Steve's son Nick. In the line up of performers was Willie Alexander. Above we have a video on YouTube from the Gloucester Writers Center that shows Willie singing "Everybody Knows" and "Mass Ave".
Even though Halloween is past we didn’t want to miss posting Lynda Mandolyn’s (of Tiger Bomb) Halloween song/video "Gimmie Gimmie Halloween". She's got a rich glowing color palate for this vid. The lyrics fit snuggly in the garage rock style of the song that celebrates all the fun childhood stuff about Trick or Treating, like breathing in those sweaty masks, but then she drops in a chilling scenario. Her love says they will always love her even when she’s dead.
Pleasure Wheel has been playing around town for a year now. They did a show at the Square Root with Modern Day Idols and The Haymakers last April. They released their EP The World Tour Is Ruined in October. They tag themselves with an art rock, glam and punk sound. Joanie Lindstrom played them this week on her Late Risers Show (11/6). They have a video for the song “Space Junk”. You can hear the trio really work the song. The busy psych guitar never slows down. The bass player has some really nice runs, but when the guitar solos, they play the root, and let the guitarist have his time. The rest of the songs on the EP are just as well thought out. You can hear the EP on Spotify below.
This is a home recording and is a little rough. The band knows it and is just happy to have something out there. We can see them fitting into the Fuzztival next year. There upcoming shows are at the Jungle in Somerville 11/14 and Moon Base One in Salem on 11/23. Killed By Deaf: A Punk Rock Tribute to Motorhead to honor the 50th anniversary of the band was has just released in October. It's got a 2002 re-recording of “Neat, Neat, Neat” with Lemmy in on the vocals. There's a lyric video for that above left. Some of the punk groups on the album are: Pennywise, Rancid, Lagwagon, GBH, Fear, Murphy’s Law, Anit-Nowhere League, The Casualties and more. You can hear the album on Spotify below. You can buy it here. At the same time The Damned will release (1/23/26) I’m Not Like Everybody Else dedicated to Brian James RIP. It’s an album of covers. Some of the songs: The Kinks with “I’m Not Like Everybody Else,” The Rolling Stones (“The Last Time”), Pink Floyd (“See Emily Play”), The Creation (“Making Time”), and The Animals (“When I Was Young” and Iggy and the Stooges with “Gimme Danger.” More about the album on Blabber Mouth website. There’s a video, above right, for the cover of “Ghost In My House” by R. Dean Taylor. The footage comes from their last USA tour including the set at the CBGBs Festival.
RADIO...... On Skybar’s October 28 Rising show he had Swedish group Stupidity in for an enjoyable interview. They had a funny Solomon Burke story and revealed the reason they first came to the US/Boston, it was because they were friends online with Andrea Gillis. Justine Covault also had a hand in Stupidity’s career with their releases on Red on Red Records. We have the interview below. The Rising show is 7 to 9pm on Tuesday. To listen go to the WMFO webpage and hit the show listing on Wednesday at 9pm and then hit archive. Joanie had Jesse and Jimmy from The Marvels on the show to talk about Staffyfest (that happened at Faces on 11/1) and Staffy. They are frank about the situation with Staffy but also emotional. We have the interview below where you get to hear a few Marvels songs too. To hear Joanie’s Late Risers Show go to the WMBR archive page . Hit the LRC show for 10/30.
PODCASTS...... Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico talked with Richard Marr who runs Galaxy Studio. His name thrown around all the time by bands as a go to guy for recording. Some of the acts he’s had long term relationships with are: Midnight Creeps, Charms, Blame It On Whitman, Toxic Narcotic and Leah Callahan. Marr’s current studio is his fifth iteration. His earlier ones have gone from Watertown, to Salem and now in Hinsdale, NH near Brattleboro. He likes it there because it cheaper than other places. Marr runs through the process of putting together a new studio. We see Hixx was in the studio on 11/2. You can see updates on the Galaxy Park Facebook page.
Throwbacks were Slade’s “She Brings Out the Devil In Me”,
The Five Man Electric Band (wow) doing “Werewolf” There
was even Elvira singing “Two Big Pumpkins”, her friends
love to kiss them! Lou Reed has a song titled “The Halloween Parade”.
The Record Machine Show had Rob Moss in for an interview. They focused on the split singles that Rob has been doing. A lot of people do covers but Rob’s focus on covers is interesting. He mentions notable reworks like the Vanilla Fudge doing Diana Ross and the Supreme’s song “You Keep Me Hanging On” and Judas Priest taking Joan Baez’s “Diamonds and Rust” to places you never would imagine. Rob talks about how he got started on the concept of split cover singles. You can hear The Record Machine Show on YouTube.
Other songs: Black Flag – “Fearless Vampire Killers, Misfis – “Wolf’s Blood”, Baby’s Blood – “Everybody Looks Like A Fucking Idiot”, Rippers – “Demons & Witches”, Slaughter and the Dogs – “Victims of the Vampire”, Devils – “The Devils Tricks Are Not a Treat”, Undead – “I Want You Dead”, Sonics – “The Witch”, Cramps – “Zombie Dance”, Monsters – “I See Dead People” and Siouxsie and the Banshees – “Halloween”. We have The Spizz, Baby’s Blood – “Everybody Looks Like A Fucking Idiot”, Monsters – “I See Dead People” and The Dead – “I Want You Dead”. embedded below. The whole show has solid hardcore along with the hardcore Halloween themed songs. You can hear the Sonic Overload shows on their web blog. . Al has logged all the shows since 2009. On the 10/23 Radio Warfare podcast (broadcast from Florida) Tim Livingston started the show with “Rally Round” by The Chelsea Curve and followed that with “The Fight” by Cold Expectations. He’s also a fan of Greg Allen’s Fringe Religion who are teasing a new album soon. Tim played one of the new cuts “Since I Stopped Loving You”. On the cut is drummer Thommy Price and members of David Johansen’s backing group. Later in the set Tim played “Gigantor” by The Peppermint Kicks. The track listing for the show is on Tim Livington’s Facebook page.
NEW MUSIC/CD's ......
And the winner is Greg Antista and the Lonely Streets and their song “Christmas, Baby Please Come Home” that is the first released Christmas song of the season (we heard it on November 1). It’s nicely punked up version of the Darlene Love classic. It’s released on Rum Bar Records. U2 also did a version of this in 2012. But that’s not enough for Rum Bar Records, they also have a Christmas offering for the Tiki/Lounge music set with the Velveteen Lounge Kitsch-en Christmas. It’s a soft and sophisticated take on Christmas music if the punk version is jarring to you.
Well the Greg Antista and the Lonely Streets was the first Christmas release we heard but even on Rum Bar’s own Bandcamp page we see that The Hellflowers had their Teenage Radio EP with The Ramone’s “Merry Christmas ( I Don’t Wanna Fight Tonight)” released earlier than them. That EP has some worthy covers. “Riot Squad” by Cock Sparrer makes a big exciting ruckus. It’s been a long time since we’ve heard a group take on a fifties song “Slippin’ and Slidin’” (Little Richard) and do it straight up. They do up the Clash’s “Spanish Bombs” and get that same feeling that the Clash did. That song is so unique. Kris Rodgers is on keys on the song.
Let’s keep with Christmas. We came across The Krayolas from San Antonio, Texas doing “Maria Believes in Christmas Again”. It’s power pop tweeked with Christmas bells and that works for us. It’s a sweet story of Christmas renewal.
Sapling released two cut on Bandcamp. One is “Drop Dead Fred”. The song is about the movie of the same name from 1991 staring Phoebe Cates. Like all Sapling songs the backdrop is all over the place with sound effects, taped drop ins and distorted guitars and the grounding bass figure. The important word in the title is DROP because the following cut is titled “17 Minutes in Heaven with Sapling and Lars”. That is 17 minutes of the band recording all the sound effects that went into “Drop Dead Fred”. 100% of the proceeds are going to food banks in New England. We liked that and we got in there and donated.
The Prozacs have their whole new EP No Way Out streaming on Bandcamp. They had “Nerf Gun Warrior” pre-released a while ago. The title track “No Way Out” is a killer track. You have Jay Prozac doing all his tricks. His songs come out sounding like hits. It’s his patented pop punk punch that never fails. The last two songs sound like Jay is writing through his kids. “Nerf Gun Warrior” sounds like Jay got into the head of a kid playing with his nerf gun and taking it very seriously in his play acting. In “No More Milk” it begins with a child saying “Hey dad, don’t have milk” like that happened in real life and then Jay just wrote a song about THAT, a perfectly good pop punk song about not having milk in the house. That guy is a genius.
TREE has a new song out titled “Bye Bye Boston Goodbye”. Dave Tree is blunt but he has feelings when he sees his city changing for the worse. “It hurts us deep inside” he confesses as he lists where the city is short changing its working class citizens. Hard hitting stuff and we expect nothing less from Dave and TREE.
We heard two songs from Boston group (or Boston based as they say) Makeout Palace on O’Brien’s weekly Spotify playlist. They have an indie sound but with way more energy and speed in the song “New Addiction” than you would expect. They have two albums on Bandcamp. The Midnight Show is from 2022 and the self titled Midight Palace from 2023. We listened to the song ”I Think We Should Have Kids”
from The Midnight Show and liked the way the song developed
lyrically over three minutes. They are clever and have an attention
to detail in both the lyics and music. We liked “New Addiction”,
“Strange Birds” and “Shut the Fuck Up” right
off the bat from the second album but there’s more to hear for
sure on that.
Taken by Vultures had a Halloween song this year. “Billy the Lonely Zombie” is a sad tale and a horror tale. Seems that Billy just wants a girlfriend but when he goes out on a date he does Zombie things, eat brains etc, and that’s the end of the girlfriend. What a woeful story. Recorded at New Alliance it’s a nice piece of rock. It has the Taken by Vultures sound which they describe as “metal, punk and silly”.
You would hard pressed to find any music more intense and in your face than Miracle Blood these days. The band just released a live set which is even more assaulting than their studio recordings. The group has been our go to group for noise music. It’s for when you need the volume to rinse your mind clean. This was done at the New Alliance Studios. They have two videos included on the page too.
Cherry Red Records in England is the king of reissues. The latest is Various Artists: CBGB - A New York City Soundtrack 1975-1986. It’s 101 cuts over 4 CDs. We got a kick just out of looking at the artists names. We knew most, others we have heard of at some point through the years. You know who is in there? Jeff and Jane Hudson (doing “Operating Instructions”), that’s so cool! Some others: The Paley Brothers, Mumps, Marbles, Tuff Darts, Milk ‘n’ Cookies, The Senders, Helen Wheels, The Stilettos, The Laughing Dogs, Shrapnel, Cramps, The Miamis, The dB’s, Urban Verbs, The Sorrows, The Colors, The Raybeats, Bad Brains and it goes on and on. The album is coming out on January 30. You can preorder it now. All the info is on the Cherry Red site. We leave punk for a minute here and talk about a psychedelic box set. This is a 10 CD (101 track and with a 48 page book) set titled Journey To The Center of the Mind: A Mainstream Records 60s Psych Adventure. In the 1960s Mainstream records put out a few notable psych records. They did the first Big Brother and the Holding Co record, but that is not included here. The most famous record is The Amboy Dukes album with “Journey to the Center of Your Mind”. Locals will glom onto the Tangerine Zoo first self-titled album. It was part of the Bosstown Sound. It has “Gloria” on it and plenty of wah wah and fuzz through it all. Other groups are The Tiffany Shade, Ellie Pop, December’s Children, The Orient Express, Jelly Bean Bandits and The Superfine Dandelion. The box set on Sundazed will be available on November 28. They have a video about it on YouTube. In Stores November 28th!
We talked about the Canadian label Stomp Records above and now we have the group Calling All Captains from Edmonton, Alberta. Their new album The Things That I’ve Lost comes out in January. They have two songs streaming on Bandcamp now. Their songs swing back and forth dynamically. We love it when they sonically crush it. They bring some strong emotional lyrics ramped up in screamo mode that hit hard. They remind us of Oh The Humanity! at those times. What comes through strong is the band’s all in commitment to the material. Having them care so much makes us care too. We got into both these songs “A New Type of Grey” and “Blood For Blood”.
Southern California’s Moonraker have covered “Rubella” a Smoking Popes song for Halloween. The joke here is to know that Rubella is German Measles. It’s set up like it’s a girl they are singing about who is infectious. The singer is ‘inflamed with desire and it’s spreading like wildfire”. It’s a true horror in our vaccination denying culture and it’s a catchy pop punk ditty too! The robot on the digital sleeve is Cyberman from Dr. Who.
The Chesterfield Kings started doing the sixties thing 10 years later in the punk era. Now those sixties influences are 60 years ago! Now they have an album of rarities titled Loose Ends: 1989-2004 Rare, B-Sides & Unreleased. It starts with the Kinks’ “Rosy, Won’t You Please Come Home” (released in 1966). The Chesterfield Kings rock it up a bit. There is fuzz guitar rather than harpsichord backing. The “Pictures of Matchstick Men” not only captures but revels in the stabbing guitar lines and wah wah guitar wash. Fabulous. They cover and add updated energy to “Hey Joe” – The Leaves version of course. They take Bo Diddly’s “Roadrunner” to a rawer place than any other cover version. They have The Pretty Things’ “Rosalyn”. They cover a summer hit with Frankie Avalon’s “Muscle Beach Party” and a Christmas favorite “White Christmas”. All Bostonians will want to hear the way they cover the Lyres “Help You Ann” and “She Pays The Rent”.
