WilkoJohnson
Wilko Johnson

Wilko Johnson the guitarist for Dr. Feelgood died this week.
In that great wasteland that was rock in the pre-punk years there were just a few groups you could find. Glam was an oasis with T Rex, Suzi Quatro and Sweet. The English pub rockers were another area with some rocking groups. Among them Dr. Feelgood stuck out. They rocked a little harder, the guitar had a wild crunch to it. A lot of punks glommed on to them.

Their name was always thrown around in the early punk years as group to listen to. When they dug into “She Does It Right” they were getting close to punk itself. Look at the video of this song where live Wilko is doing his menacing back and forth on the stage and see the singer, Lee Brilleaux, all tensed up and getting red in the face trying to put real danger into the lyrics. Wilko didn’t use a pick. That sound he got was proto punk too. That’s it right there, either you get it or you don’t.

Here's "She Does It Right" from a 1975 The Gordie Scene.

A good article on the BBC website

The RavenDave from Classic Ruins has started booking the club The Raven on Pleasant St in Worcester. He says it's got a "Pro stage and sound great room. We are currently doing first fridays." Dave's first gig is 12/2/2022 with The Bickersins, Jonnee Earthquake and The Ballbusters. If you are interested in playing you can contact us and we can give you the info.

Sapling are currently recording their second album with Jared Mann at Distorted Forest Studio in RI. They ran out of money though, so they set up a Indegogo fund raising page. As of this writing they are gettiing close to their goal of $2500. If you want to help them along (and learn how to do a tequila shot) go to their Indegogo page

On the Town with Mikey DeeSmitt E Smitty will be on On the Town With Mikey Dee on Wednesday, November 30. On the Town is on WMFO on Wednesday at 9pm. You can listen at 95.3 or on the website

There’s a half hour Pixies gig at the Rat from 1987 on YouTube (audio only). It’s posted by the Pixies so you can feel good about listening to it. The fidelity is rough as you would expect. Lots of nice Pixie moments in this.

Check it out here.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......and VIDEOS.....

Actor|observerWe’re always rabid for any new Actor|Observer material. The've just released a new seven cut album Songs For the Newly Reclusive.

It begins with the previously released “Fool’s Gold” about the gentrification of Boston (and other cities) that are pushing out artists. The song starts with fifly seconds of soft playing that sets you up for the fearsome group sound that crashes in. The roar that emanates from this group comes from every player, they are a true unit. That power along with the emotional content makes for demanding listings. This is music with depth.

“Man Enough” is a screed against those who think they have rules on how you should act as a man. This is delving into the fight that’s going on in society right now. Here, as in the rest of the album, Greg Marquis voice embodies the righteous lyrics as he delivers it with screams and throat rasps.

There’s no let-up in the seven songs. They've been able to get all the live intensity into this recording which is always the goal. This is a major work by a major local group!!

They've also released a video for the song “Arm’s Reach.” It has good quality color and speedy cuts that are able to transmit the urgency of the song ... it also shows some of the group's live intensity which is not an easy thing.

The song is about how people hide away rather than commit and interact with other people. The lyrics really bring that situation home: “I used to be so trusting/Now I can’t trust in anything again” and “I’ve learned there’s nothing wrong with being withdrawn.” You can tell the writer has been there.

Black HalosThe Black Halos, are a legendary glam punk group from Canada. They just released (Nov. 25) their second album How the Darkness Doubled (and that's a line from Television’s “Marquee Moon” very cool!) on Stomp Records. Original members Billy Hopeless, Rich Jones (guitarist with Michael Monroe, Ginger Wildheart, AMEN), and Jay Millette, have reunited, and have added new members John Kerns (The Age Of Electric) and Danni Action (ACIIDZ).

The double album vinyl version is already sold out. You can hear the album and buy the digital on Bandcamp. They make every song click.

The guitars have that glam grind. The drums have a simple stomp that drives every minute. The songs are filled with struggle, street life and searching. There’s no sense that they will ever run out of subject matter for songs – the album seems overflowing with ideas.

They even have Michael Monroe singing on “Ready to Snap,”

Here's with “Tenement Kids”.

They've released a video of the song “Better Days” from the album. The ‘better days’ they sing about in the song are now. The past were hard they say. It’s an optimistic song that way. The video mixes up the band doing the song along with old black and white cuts from earlier 1990's gigs.

Color Killer Stop Calling Me Frank Key of Cautic

Color Killer have a new single with “Skate Park.” It’s a well-crafted pop punk song. They sing about the skate park where they say they are “wasting all my time.” They don’t rush the tempo, and the melody and guitar riffs sit comfortably in the groove. It’s three minutes long but seems to go by much faster.

It’s a sad situation on Christmas, Santa calling it quits. He’s drinking beer and catching up on his CSI shows. That’s the picture Stop Calling Me Frank sets up in “Say it Ain’t So, Santa” a song off their Christmas EP.

There are two more songs that go with this. “C’mon All Ye Boys” has an Irish swing to it. What a great seasonal group drinking song! You can just imagine it happening.

They follow that up with a reprise of “Drinking After Work”, a song for all seasons.

Skybar started his Rising Show (WMFO Tuesday 8pm) with a song that got by us when it was released two weeks ago. It was “Watch It Burn” by Key of Caustic. The beginning reminds us of “Eve of Destruction” but then it goes it’s own way. There’s a lot appealing about this tune. The guitars have a nice ring to them in the fills and it’s got a good bass interlude too.
