Fasten your seat belts - it’s gonna be a bumpy ride!! There's a new GG Allin biopic on the way...... GG Allin: Live. Fast. Die. will be directed by Jonas Akerlund, a music video maker and who also directed the film Lords of Chaos. The screenwriter Richard Schenkman spent a year researching, he interviewed GG’s brother Merle Allin, his bandmates and his now-deceased mother. Here's the interesting note: "The producers have acquired Allin’s life and music rights" Gee, I wonder who got the wad of dough for that!! There's sort of contradictory info going on here - The producers say they "plan to tell the true story of Allin as what happens to a borderline personality when the reach for fame exceeds the limits of talent… when substance abuse goes unchecked and mental illness undiagnosed and untreated… and when a fictional character takes over a real person’s life, driving GG beyond limits anyone could possibly endure.” Screenwriter Schenkman said: “I read hundreds of articles about him, arrest and trial transcripts, even his unpublished memoir. I watched hours of videos and endured (oh the poor man!!-ed) track after track of his assaultive music. I wanted everything in this movie to be accurate and true. And it is.” But ..... here's the kicker Schenkman is a writer of low-budget horror fare such as Mischief Night, Zombie Night and The Man from Earth: Holocene, the latter of which he also directed. UGH! We shall see.... Here’s an article on the Hollywood Reporter
Captain Easychord took in a night at The Jungle. Things are rough out there and add the Captain's apartment getting burnt out, it becomes a necessity to distract the mind and calm the soul with some music. Easychord found a community feeling in the groups who exchanged members all evening. The line-up was Linnea's Garden, Emily Grogan Band, Crow Follow and Lights Out. See the photos and read what Captain Easychord has to say by clicking the photo link below. This year in the rock area they have Michael Kane & the Morning Afters, Walter Sickert & the Army of Broken Toys, Motel Black, Linnea’s Garden and The Chelsea Curve.
They also have Tysk Tysk Task, a band just doing their own thing. There’s no template for the chances they are taking. It seems like all is up for grabs. You can hear their album You’re Sorry More below.
Skybar is turning the tables on Steev Ricardo of Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico by interviewing him this Tuesday, 12/6/22 on his Rising show on WMFO. Steev had a long career in the record industry and was the man behind a lot of groups you probably love. To hear the show tune in to WMFO 91.5 FM on Tuesday at 8 or listen to the archive version after Tuesday by going to the WMFO archive page and hitting Tuesday at 8pm then hit the archive button. VIDEOS... It seems like it's been a while since there was a new Shang Hi Los song. That’s rectified with “Takes One To Know One” and its video. The song takes up a marching beat as it seems to refer to the rat race and workplace relations. It has a very together group sound with a wide sonic palate. It hits hard, and that fits the lyrics which have a sharp bite. The visuals have office workers in lock step and they don’t seem like they’re having a good time. The filming, by Joan Hathaway and Alex Bandow, (Joan has been doing some fine videos recently) takes full advantage of the office backdrop. The Shang Hi Los just seem to have it all together. With all their talent and their ability to put quality into every phase of music making they are poised for even more success. Bang Camaro wants you to know they are BACK! Their mission is to bring the '70s back with them…that’s always been their mission. “Too Fast to Fall In Love” sounds like what we would be listening to if punk never happened. The video is a clever conceit too. It’s sketches in a school notebook done by a heavy metal hands leads one through the song. Rum Bar’s Street Walkin’ Cheetahs have a new video for “Know Your Product” the Saints song off the All The Covers album. It’s a live performance video from a show at The Good Bar in Long Beach, CA which looks like a cool place with all the skateboards hanging up on the walls. “Know Your Product” is just a nice hunk of rock. The Cramps are back in the music charts. And you know why.... it's because the Netflix show Wednesday has a scene where Wednesday Addams dances to “Goo Goo Muck.” It’s very well done. Now all the viewers who never heard of The Cramps have gone searching for it, hence it’s back in the charts. Jenna Ortega, who plays Wednesday, talks about where she got the dance moves “Thanks to Siouxsie Sioux, Bob Fosse’s Rich Man’s Frug, Lisa Loring, Lene Lovich, Denis Lavant, and archival footage of goths dancing in clubs in the 80’s. Helped me out on this one." she wrote. The Cramps scooped the song up from the Ronnie Cook and the Gaylads 1962 version. There’s a story about that now too and where the money for all this goes. That story was in Billboard How do you do a video for a 25 second thrash hardcore song with a super speedy tempo? Here’s one way and we think it does the job well. This is “Destroy” by Banda Destruida, from Chile. RADIO...... Angelle Wood had a new Boston Emissions show this last week. The last show was in July. We never feared Angelle that wouldn’t come back. She’s dedicated!! And she’s all revved up with the Rock and Roll Rumble finally returning after two years too. She had an opening set that was attention getting loud with Kid Disaster, One Fall and Gretchen Shae and the Middle Eight. Then Oh The Humanity’s “Worth Nothing” which sounded fine in the flow of music.
This week on Crash Course for the Ravers Brian Young had Joe Mazzari and Dixie Deadwood of 61 Ghosts and Simon Ritt playing in the studio. Simon Ritt mentioned he’s on the long waited for tribute album for The Dawgs. He does a version of “Hit the Fan.” We’re been waiting for that album for a few years. 61 Ghosts had plenty of time to play both live and play recorded material. The rest of the show had the rock we like with: Lou Reed, Stiff Little Fingers, REM, Dogmatics and T Rex. To hear the show go to the WMFO schedule page hit CCFTR at 1pm on Saturday and then hit the ‘archive’ button.
There was a load of local music on On the Town with Mikey Dee on WMFO this week. That’s nothing new, there always is, but this time it was parceled out by Smitt E. Smitty of The Feztones and Little Billy Lost. Smitty gave an advance play of two singles of his bands. One is a cover of “Rebel Rebel” by the Feztones and “Wash Your Sins Away” by Little Billy Lost. The rest of the show was mostly new local releases. It’s a good show to take in to get up to speed on that. To hear the show go to the WMFO schedule page hit On The Town with Mikey Dee at 1pm on Wednesday and then hit the ‘archive’ button. PODCASTS........
This week on Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico Steev Ricardo interview members of The Dogmatics: Jerry Lehane, Peter O’Halloran, Jimmy O’Halloran and James Young. They talk about their early history and where it all started…the parish and school…these guys go way back. It eventually leads to Thayer St. They said there was only heat from Monday to Friday and the weekends they would freeze. With a freight elevator they were able to bring up their guitar equipment and motorcycles right into the loft. Their first club show was at Cantone's on a Tuesday. They have lots of colorful stories from the club scene in the first half of the '80s. They end talking about The Dogumentary the documentary about the group. It’s been completed and should show up early next year.
Sonic Overload had its annual covers show. It’s a fun show to take in. Al Quint’s collection and knowledge are a deep well. He has Paris 1942 doing a version of “She Cracked” by The Modern Lovers, Le Shok does Delta 5’s “Mind Your Own Business,” Rocket From the Crypt does Adam and the Ant’s “Press Darlings,” The Satanic Togas go back to“Lights Out” by the Angry Samoans, Sonny and Cher’s “The Beat Goes On” is done by The Screamers…and it goes on. There’s a lot to hear on this. Al even gets to the sixties with The Litter doing an extended “I’m a Man” the Bo Diddly song. You can hear the show on the Sonic Overload webpage
The Rat Tales podcast have been busy lately. They posted a new Jon Butcher interview this week. Jon was playing the Rat in the early days beside the punk bands. He took his blues-based rock and went on to a successful career. He has a good handle on what was going on in those early days. Then they have a lot of videos posted of local acts, both new and old. It’s worth getting in there and checking out their shows on the Spotify page.
NEW MUSIC/CDs...... Brad Marino just released a live set from his show at the Down South Showdown from January 2022. He played with Geoff Palmer and Zack Sprauge. The songs include some recent rockers we love: “C’mon, C’mon, C’mon”, “Girl, I Want You” and “Local Show”. Everything sounds nice and gritty. These guys never miss.
Dream of a Man in a Top Hat is a group that has two members of Native Tongue. They were doing cutting edge music then and still are. In "The Destination" thier latest effort the guitar has a classic post punk slash to it, a la Gang of Four. There’s a nightmare quality to the lyrics, like someone desperately trying to think their way out of confusion. This would have got plenty of air play back in the alternative radio days. We’d love to hear it on the radio now.
Highway Chapel’s last album came out in 2020. It’s nice to have some new material. The Reverend Joe Fagan has his thick (and cheap) guitar tone all over this. He also likes a good riff so some songs are built on those. Joe’s voice is very effective in the song “Visitor.” What a tasty tone on the lead guitar line, it digs in and leaves a mark. The song “Lost Something” has stuck in our heads. One because of the heart thumping rhythm guitar and the simple lyric “we lost something here” which gets repeated so insistently that it resonates. The Rev has the beginnings of the sermon on “Walked Upon the Earth”. A sermon backed with plenty of guitar.
The Toeheads' single “Told You Twice” from Big Neck Records is a blast of hysterical garage rock. It’s like DMZ but even more unhinged sounding. "The Toeheads represent the genre in the vain of their forefathers like Jay Reatard and Ty Segall, bestowing monstrous, impermissible anthems. Their fuzzy rock resembles the effects of amphetamines and hair of the dog, and just when you thought Detroit was on the threshold of demolition, Toeheads successfully salvage any lost hope you had in the Motor City and in rock'n'roll." The Detroit trio will have an album, A Cruel Winner’s World, out soon!
