Tiget Bomb, The Cynz, Mach Bell Experience

Geno's in Portland , ME

March 18, 2023

The Mach Bell Experience

A brush with fate goes to show you how fragile life can be, and those who are lucky enough to come out of a potentially fatal situation are quickly reminded to not take anything for granted. A sense of real urgency and determination is needed to keep the music alive and flourishing despite the dreadful trends of gentrification and transitioning of original rock practitioners into the afterworld. Tonight’s show at the revered Portland, ME venue Geno’s was a much needed affirmation of the power of the rock scene and the endangered resources available to provide this new lease in life. Cowboy Mach Bell, who a few months ago suffered a heart attack and underwent quintuple bypass surgery, put this and more into perspective with his first show since cheating death.

Tiger Bomb

Kicking off Mach’s rise from the ashes was two acts that more than hold their own in the pantheon. Portland’s premiere all-girl band Tiger Bomb set the tone with a hard-hitting but melodic set of original garage punk songs, mostly from their two releases Uproar and Sugar Buzz (both highly recommended and on Dionysus Records). The band combines the talents of two female punk rock legends, former Broods singer/guitarist Chris Horne and former Fabulous Disaster singer/guitarist Lynda Mandolyn, and their shared respect and complementing personalities and styles is palpable and pleasurable with Chris’s harder edges and Lynda’s sweeter tones. They deftly displayed both beginning with “Turn It Up” and “Only You” and ending with “One Thing’s For Sure” and “Tell Me More.” Oh, and the rhythm section of bassist Amanda Ayotte and drummer Jessica Smith is also a force to be reckoned with as well!

Cynz

The next band was New York City-based the Cynz, who have been tearing up the club scene at the Big Apple and New Jersey and this was their first time playing in the New England area. I actually caught their earlier show at Square Root in Roslindale two nights earlier and they absolutely killed it! And, this evening, they proceeded to do it again, this time up in Vacationland! Lead singer Cyndi Dawson brought her charismatic personality, vocal chops and ferocious songs, written with guitarist Henry Seiz. Bassist Anne Husick holds it all together with her big bottom sound and powerhouse drummer Mike Wretched raises the threshold of pain through the roof! They’ve been called the closest to the old school CBGB’s era band around today, and with such rousers like “Superfan,” “I Need Fun” and “Quick Fix Man,” they certainly have a case in point!

The Mach Bell Experience

The big attraction of the evening was highly anticipated in light of his aforementioned health scare and when Mach Bell hit the stage he was still every bit the energetic rock showman and didn’t miss a beat, tearing through his body of work with Thundertrain and the Joe Perry Project! His Experienced band included Johnny Press and Jeff Trembley on guitar, Joe Black on bass and Al Dallesandro on drums and they brought the muscle and bustle to his classics “Four Guns West,” “Cindy is a Sleeper” and, of course, his signature songs “I Gotta Rock” and “Once a Rocker, Always a Rocker!” And, this time around, he managed to destroy his maracas! Thanks to the miracle of science, medicine and rock ‘n’ roll, the Cowboy was saved from the jaws of hell and will be around awhile longer to stirrup the scene!
