Faces in Malden continues to improve my suburban daydream. It’s less
than a ten-minute drive, I can preshow with Sushi at All Seasons Table, parking
is usually free and close, and they have bills like tonight’s. I’m having trouble keeping up with photos and writing so I’m going to try to keep both tighter from now on. We’ll see how that goes. Anyway -
The Shang Hi Los kick it off with the Kopko/D’Angora charm offensive. The harmonies, handclaps, and the "Ohhh Ohhhs" highlight the tunes' early girl group, power pop roots. You can get your musical angst out with some other band - well, there is that bad boy Billy and his gun.
Diablogato pulls up in their flaming pickup truck full of “gasoline, lust, and larceny.” Jesse Mayer keeps the pistons pumping at the red line hoping that that smoke doesn’t turn blue. Drew adds the high octane on that pretty Gresch. Johnny rides the upright bass all over the bed, bucking with the leaf springs. Drew I. is behind the wheel - he don’t need no Waze to get where he’s going down that Devil Road. If you’re hitching - jump in the back.
Hammered Saint schmere red paint all over the top of the bill. Wham, Bham, thank you schlam! They build a teetering house on Mark Enet’s kit. Andy Excuse stokes a fire from the logs in his deep bass backyard, Curt Florczak - arguably the best-dressed man in local rock - welcomes guests with guitar slashes as tight as his skinny suspenders. Emily Doran is one of the most compelling frontwoman in town. She yelps and howls, she lurches and flies across the stage. She’s the cat on the hot tin roof.
