Giorgio Murderer / King Khan and The Shrines The Sinclair June 13, 2016
Giorgio Murderer nee Rob Craig has a back story worthy of Sun Ra. Check out Lorena Cupcakes excellent write up on Bandcamp for that rundown. The lyrics on his current disk, Holographic Vietnam War, drop the rose colored glasses and layout snapshots of small worlds teetering on the edge of control. GM did all the instruments on the disk. He brought a taut band to flesh it out at the Sinclair. Live, the synth was less loopy, more stabbing. The already tight, simple guitar riffs and chord changes were pushed even harder. GM sported Devoesque overalls and plastic shield eye glasses. Craig was tightly wrapped in orange long sleeve tee and black stocking over his head. The tweaked up vocals add a touch of menace to the excellent rockin foundation.
King Khan and The Shrines stir up a huge garage-soul-r-and-b-psych-gumbo. In addition to the flamboyant big gutted Khan strutting around on vocals and eye catching outfits, he carried guitar, bass, keys, percussion and a full bari anchored horn section. It was a big, sweaty and sexy party. The horns punctuated and shined light onto the big kicks, and the J.B. moans, screams, pops and riffs. The organ stuck a swizzle stick into the crowds collective head and swirled their syncopated brains. The pit was small, a bit mannered but up for ping pong. The King swooned, crooned and more or less mooned. All hail the king.
