Glowbox, Speed Fossil, Modern Day Idols
The Square Root, Roslindale, MA
October 15, 2022
Speed Fossil
|
The Square Root hosted a night of solid power pop and roll
out on the periphery of the territories. Loquacious lyrics, busy drums, hot
licks, and melodic bass are on the menu.
Glowbox
|
Glowbox has been getting some attention lately and they deserve
it. They kept it lively with three vocalists and tunes hinting at the Beatles,
Big Star, and an ass-shaking cover of the Cars' "Bye Bye Love." Jim
McGroddy's pushy drums and Sean Sullivan's melodic
base gave Kevin Drinan and Mike Fiore's songs
and guitars a foundation with just the right amount of snap, crackle, and pop.
Glowbox is the kind of band you would love to discover by accident
in your local brick-and-mortar surprising the uninitiated with catchy pop smarts.
Speed Fossil
|
Speed Fossil didn’t let things lag. They jumped right
into it with Livin’ the Dream with the Crow Follow horn section
providing a bit of sax and trumpet swing and punch to the horn lines. Leader
Garret Vandermolen appropriates from the best, John, Paul,
Ray, Graham, Elvis C., and the Smithereens to up the variety quotient through
slow, fast, and in between. The horns come back for a rollicking three-song
coda.
Modern Day Idols
|
The Modern Day Idols keep the tune quality high. Of all the
bands they seem most likely to be heard on your trip up the dial. Leader Chris
Wagner’s songs are less quirky power pop and have a singer-songwriter’s
honest, emotional core supporting the abundant hooks. Stephen Hart
mugs and plugs on drums. Bruno Giordano does a fine job playing
substitute teacher on lead guitar.
