Dress Like a Rock Star

The French Club, Waltham

October 30, 2021

Justine Covalt
’s and David Minehan's new venture, Red Mammoth Productions, had a way successful kickoff bash last night at the French Club in scenic Waltham. From the outside, the building is nondescript, grey, and low-end industrial. Inside it has function hall ambiance and decor that gives it a familiar, Once West feel, complete with a disco ball, a decent amount of mirrors, glitzy chandeliers, and a bar in the back corner. The right size stage is at one end. There is a good size dance floor that stays busy all night. There are tables for seating in the back. Finally, there is a very welcome site - a large parking lot.

It was raining torrents and the stars still came out to play. Nancy Sinatra and Tom Jones made the scene. There was a knight in shining armor. Suzi Quatro pulled her leather jumper out of the closet for one last dance. Moulty hurt his leg so he and his hook kept a low profile at a back table. Johnny Ramone had a number of doppelgangers. John Lennon looks fab in his Sargent Pepper get-up. Smitty sported his best black dress kilt and came as his Rockstar self. Check out the slideshow cuz every picture tells a story.

Skybar Lusardi and Paula Worsley

To my regret, I missed the first two bands, Key of Caustic and Speed Fossil. Kid Gulliver has a new rhythm section. Andy Excuse's bass rings out and the combination gives their charmers a little more rock edge. It didn't obscure their power-pop cool or Simone and David's genius confections. From "Pop Star" to "Beauty School Drop Out" from "Suzie Survived" to my long-time fav "I Like Your Hair" the dance floor was definitely open.

Justine and The Unclean kick it up another rock notch. They get "Passive Aggressive", hang out over "Margaritas and Second Hand Smoke", engage in some new "Drug Seeking" behavior, chase it with a "Scorpion Bowl" and engage in some "R & R Blackmail". They broke things up with a 4 Song semi acoustic set in the middle and then kicked our dancing asses with guest red devil Linnea on more cowbell to the break.

A lot of people poo poo cover bands. Given that the goal is harmless nostalgic fun and my notoriously low bar for what constitutes fun, who am I to disagree? When the band includes the creme-de-la-creme of Boston Rock and they are fully committed to reinvigorating their youthful favorites, you can't go wrong.

Charles Hanson and Johnny Lynch - Beth

Johnny Lynch moves from the kit to the all-night mic with his Kiss tribute band Beth and black book band picks you can’t lose. They cherry-pick the best of Kiss’s first and second-tier hits. "Gotta Choose", "Rock Bottom", "Firehous"e, "Cold Gin", "Black Diamond", and yes, you gotta play "Rock n Roll All Night". The stars in the crowd sing along loud and proud and play their air guitars.

Linda Twiss Gioscia - Hey Blondie

Hey Blondie ends the night with a mucho caliente new wave disco infusion - "One Way", "Call Me", "Rip to Shreds", "Dreaming"," Rapture" and "Heart of Glass" - that left the Halloween stars shaking it up into the night.
