Gretchen and the Banshees, ScroogesNotch Brewery, Brighton, MADecember 22, 2022
Gretchen and The Banshees and The Scrooges lit up the Christmas lights at Notch tap room on a rain-soaked Thursday night. The crowd was solid, the beer selection was excellent, the sound was decent. The familiarity of the repertoire made it easy to jump on board Santa’s rock sleigh for the run over the river and through the woods to grandma’s house.
Gretchen and the Banshees mixed the hits with deeper cuts. Love the back-and-forth between Ronan Fahy’s and Richard Cramer’s guitars. They both rock it with controlled abandon. Cramer’s pedal board probably has its own transportation. He deploys it with subtlety, sparkle, and taste as he lays on gauzy synth and key lines to darklight the goth in the night.
Lillian Edith Martin on drums and Killian Carcosa on bass help the crowd loosen up their hips a bit. Gretchen brings her powerful pipes to the big numbers like Cities in Dust, Monitor, Isreal, Passenger and Christine while keeping the slow burn on the Cure-esque Happy House and the groovy Beatles' cut Dear Prudence.
Can’t go wrong with the Dave Unger-led Scrooges. They rock the back flap off their red Santa’s Elves' union suits. The crowd is bouncing and hollering choruses like Charlie-in-the-Boxes sprung from the Island of Misfit toys. "1969", "1970", "Raw Power", "Fun House", "Yr Pretty Face is Going to Hell", "Loose" and I could go on. Tom Quartulli pushes the middle of the set even higher with some well-placed Steve Mackay tenor honk and skronk. They usually pull the red hats out of the closet every year around Christmas time.
