Real Kids

We were having a good winter run with next to no weather issues until this week. We got cramped with snow falling on good gig nights. We scooted out to see the Real Kids after the Thursday night/Friday foot of snow even with a forecast of snow for that night at midnight.

We were happy to see the Midway was on the full side. With this bill it seemed that no way were people gonna skip it. We missed Richie Parsons. For his set he had a guitarist and cello player up there with him doing his popalicious material. He has even more new material in the works. This whole new second wave of music from him is an unexpected pleasure. We can’t wait for the new songs.

The Real Kids played the next set at 10 pm. We saw Artie Sneiderman in the crowd. He tried to go the Worcester show that got cancelled because John got hurt during the load in. The group seemed energetic and in good spirits even while setting up.

They proceeded to play a edgy rocking set. The playing was sharp, the guitars biting and the vocals strong. John Felice said later that he tried to make the set all upbeat rock with just the slow version of Common at Noon as a change of pace. We were amazed at how many songs they didn’t play which tells us they have a large set list to draw from these days. They also did a few new songs. They fit in the set seamlessly. John says he’s got plenty of new songs in the pipeline too. Rick Harte said the new recorded material is getting to the finish line.

The set seem to go by super-fast. There were standout versions of All Night Boppin’ and Shake Outta Control. They never got to Baby Blue and All Kindsa Girls that were on the set list. Solid Gold from the first LP was the encore song. That seemed to have a whole new life as they rocked it home.

It was a wonderful crowd. When the songs ended it wasn’t just applause but that sort of din that comes in a wave full of clapping, whooping and yelling. John said after the set that he loved playing with that response.

Judd on drums nailed all the fills that make the songs pop out. He’s an interesting musician with a long history that should be written up. We were standing in front of Dickie on bass and hearing that warm tone putting out the moving and melodic bottom is a treat. It was that warm tone juxtaposed with the harsh treble of the guitars that made the gig for us.

If you are a long time Boston punk fan you can’t help but get caught up in the whole history of it when you see Billy Cole and John side by side playing the songs that we now know will go on for a long time to come. We have a lot of notable front men but they are the one duo that inspire.

It was a set not to miss. I feel bad for the Worcester people. Maybe they can reschedule that.

Muck and the Mires

After the Real Kids set it was talking with friends as Muck and the Mires did a fast set up and before you know it – they’re off and running. It’s like a needle hitting the groove and it’s going to play to the end…with no space between the songs. You know what it’s like. It’s a rush of British Invasion like songs. They are irresistibly catchy and flying by one-by-one. Like they say in their own song, it’s “hypnotic”.

We are always drawn to and entertained by Linda’s fills and accents. Somehow they capture your ear as if they were melodic. It’s a wonder and she always smiles and does back ground singing also. Amazing!

The group Badass Mother Fuzzers

The Badass Motherfuzzers came across the pond from France. It took them a couple of songs to sink into their trio of meat and potatoes garage punk chops. A decent if unspectacular end to a another rockin' night at the Midway.

We never stop appreciating how we have easy access to groups like the classic Real Kids and gems like Muck and the Mires. It’s nice to be a Boston punker!!
