The BGN News Archive

February 21, 2022

Vanyaland reported that some Cambridge bars are lining up the music again. They talk about Toad, Atwoods and Charlie’s Kitchen.

ManRayWe’re most interested in those Monday nights at Charlie’s where we’ve seen some great shows. They plan on starting on March 21 but havent' announced any booked bands as yet. The Vanyaland article

We Are But Your Children, the book about the club ManRay, sold out in two weeks. Now, they are up and running again with a second printing. You can get it here. And what happened to the new space that was supposed to open last October? That never happened. Why?

Last week we linked to a story that had Steve Jones admitting he listened to Boston and Journey during the punk years. This week we have Captain Sensible listing his favorite prog tracks. He loves his prog: Caravan, King Crimson and Gong! To read it and weep go to the LouderSound website

The Dents

The Downhauls

This week Joanie Lindstrom was at the Notch Brewery on Thursday for The Dents, The Chelsea Curve and The Downhauls:

"Thursday night at Notch, it's a nice little fallback to have if you want to venture out, for free! An abnormally warm Feb. evening (things got going at 7:30) brought out a good crowd to see the Dents, Downhauls and Chelsea Curve. Lots of rocking girls (and a few guys) entertaining us, no one sounding worse for the wear (the Downhauls were just shy of two years since their last gig). Someone thought it felt like being at The Abbey, a bit of the same vibe with lots of us old timers, but obviously the spacious room at Notch and large outdoor area is completely different than the Abbey. I highly recommend checking out this Thursday series, especially after starting with a nice drink and snack at Article 24 down the street (for those of us who don't care too much about beer).

Joanie in Greece

Joanie is always out and about and she took off to Greece while the fares were cheap ... and we have the report. She says that Greece has lots record stores and she went to many of them. A good cure for the winter blues is to see the deep blue skies of Greece. The report is here

Iggy and skater

One of the last places you think you would hear “I Wanna Be Your Dog” is the Olympics…but there it was, halfway into Alexandra Trusova’s figure skating program. It was the John McCrea version of the song on the Disney’s Cruella soundtrack but still, what a surprise. Does Alexandra know about the original and from whence it came?? Pitchfork writes about the event

The Damned are releasing an exclusive re-issue of their Strawberries album for this year’s Record Store Day (April 23, 2022). It's only available in shops April 23rd.

And Happy Anniversary to The Damned's first LP, released 45 years ago!!!

VIDEOS.....

Smitt E Smitty Buzzkill Baby

Smitt E. Smitt y has his own look and takes a different musical road than most. His group sound builds up from a tribal drum rhythm. He draws detailed characters in his lyrics like his last one “Tall Man Dreams” and his newest - “Buzzkill Baby”.

Smitty has the know-how when it comes to videos so “Buzzkill Baby” has rich controlled color and stiking images. There are some fun cameos at the end. You can just see the whole “Buzzkill Baby” clicking and becoming a catch phrase. Smitty is going to hit pay dirt with one of his efforts, this is a good chance here.

Wreckless Eric

Wreckless Eric’s “Whole Wide World” was in Expedia's Super Bowl ad starring Ewan McGregor this year. The song comes in at the last 10 seconds. The ad can be seen on YouTube “Whole Wide World” is such a simple yet resonating song. That’s been true from the minute it came out. It’s rewarding to see its longevity. There’s a little on the song and ad here

Gorilla Toss have a video for their song “Famously Alive” which will be the title of their album on Sub Pop. The video was premiered on the Our Culture. The group says: “‘Famously Alive’ is about living with purpose and excitement whether you’re famous or not, accepting your strangeness and thriving even if your successes look different than other people’s.”

PODCASTS.........

Blowing Smoke With Twisted Rico talks with WMBR’s Late Risers Club DJ Joanie Lindstrom on the occasion of her 35th year on the show. Joanie who lived in Kenmore Sq. mentioned those stairs in front of the Strawberries on that side of the square. People used to hang over there. It was in the shade in the summer. That’s one of the things that made the Square a comfortable place for people ... that's gone now because of the renovation.

Joanie obviously has the perspective on how the scene and radio has changed through the years. There’s a lot of talk about the other college radio stations and the relevance of radio today.

Only Sonic Overload would have a GG Allin song on its Valentine Day show. Al Quint also has the Dead Boys “What Love Is” and the Pagans “What’s This Shit Called Love?” and the Gang of Four’s “Love Like Anthrax.” That’s makes us feel better about the holiday. He also has the soon to be released “Lord of Chaos” by Killing Joke which sounds massive. The show is at Sonic Overload.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

Winter Project Jay Prozac

The Winter Project guys stopped the beers and banter and got a new song recorded. “Taste the Color of Your Lipstick” has more of a roar from the guitars than other songs of theirs.

They have Tanya Venom from Stormstress as guest vocalist. They don’t just use her as a back-up singer but set her up as a character in the lyrics. There’s a real sexy exchange as the band singer fixates on Tanya’s character and Tanya sings “You want to taste the color of my lipstick.” It puts you into a scene like “Paradise by the Dashboard Light” but with taste. This is writing outside the box and it works. It's a lot to accomplish in less than three minutes and sure enough as they sing “Scream out loud,” repeatedly at the end, you don’t want it to end. You want more of the story.

J Prozac now has six songs preleased from his album Won’t Let Go. The Rum Bar release is on Bandcamp. It has 11 songs and 6 bonus songs for a total of 17.

We’ll revisit this LP when all the songs are released but till then check out “Number One”. When Prozac does his melodic punk thing like this and it has that innocent romantic feeling, it’s impossible to resist.

Brad Marino Crow Follow Shirts

Brad Marino has another one of his pop rock stompers. “She’s Doing Her Thing” is Brad at his best. It’s bouncy and breezy and will make you get up and dance across the room. Everything works in this recording: the bass/drums are locked in, the guitar riffs ring, the whirly organ adds interest, as does the background vocals near the end.

The impression is that Crow Follow wanted “Indiana Line” to sound like an 18 wheeler with a loose load barrel-assing down the highway chased by a skeleton army on Halloween night - and it does. The sound is thick and heavy with some clanking going on in the background. This band are the masters of gothic atmosphere. Morphine is the obvious comparison but they are doing their own thing and are compiling a fine catalog of material.

The Shirts were a Rat favorite in 1977. Boston really took to them. The singer Annie Golden went on to acting. She was in the movies Hair and Twelve Monkeys and on TV she was part of Orange is the New Black. This comes to mind because Arthur Lamonica, the guitarist/songwriter for The Shirts has a few albums of his own under the name Rome 56. The latest is Days of Carefree Living. It was done in a home studio during the pandemic.

Even though it’s low key and done with a drum machine the songwriting carries the work. He does both serious (“In This Place” and "Coffin Song” and light songs (“Platinum Girl” and “Girl From Outer Space”) .

We played “In This Place” more than a few times. It captures the solitary life many of us have been forced into these last two years.
