We caught the Plymouth Punk Rock Market on Saturday 7/30, at the Mayflower Brewery. There’s never enough punk events down the South Shore! There were a good amount of customers moving around a dozen vendor tents, a food truck, a band playing, and more vendors inside the Mayflower Brewery loading dock. And we could see thirsty customers going in and out of the Brewery which was a good way to cool of and take a break. The Gobshites played and there were a few record vendors…we didn’t see CD’s for sale…which again shows the popularity of vinyl. One place had a GG Allan 45 for sale. Price was $12.00 , but a Angry Young Bees’ 45 was going for $28.00. Portland Distro from Portland, ME had a table. They had shirts and LP’s. They had two Bad Brains LP’s. These were new pressings of the albums. Wild Planet had a table and area with full on B 52’s style. Other items we saw were "Don’t Talk To Me" hats and shirts - is that from the GG Allin song? ... flower pots with Wendy O. Williams and Aladdin Sane pics ....tons of Goth and Halloween related items ... goth pot holders and skull shaped soap dispensers. All the vendors were excellent! The quality of all the items was high, nothing amateurish here. We met Leandra Kelly, who organized the Market. Check out her Etsy shop My Rock'n'Roll Baby (cool handmade accessories and housewares) she even has Safety Pin Earrings!! She plans to make the Plymouth Punk Rock Market a regular thing - hopefully even monthly!! Many of the customers were not only buying punk items but wearing them and there was lots of blue and purple hair. It's so great to see the South Shore punk community come out for this. You could see that forty five years after its banner year of 1977, punk is still not only a form of music or fashion but a way of thinking and a lifestyle. People say "Punk Is Dead" ... but that's not true, not even close!! John Keegan hit the Rockwell for Frankie & the Witch Fingers. They formed in Indiana in 2013 but now are operating out of LA. Nikki Pickle from Death Valley Girls plays bass. Even though they have seven albums out they're not well known around here. That should change now because John describes a night of deep psych music!! Click the photo link for the full review. Also this Saturday (Aug 6) is the rescheduled New Years show with Four Point Restraints, Time and Place, and Haley Day at the Canadian American Club in Watertown. After the bands play DJ Greg Zapata sets up the booth and there will be dancing past midnight! and it's Free entry and snacks, and cheap drinks all night. This occasion is also to celebrate Will Barry of Four Point Restraints who is leaving Boston for South Carolina. Reclaim Rock City Community Fair is this Saturday August 6th– Live Music, Sports, Games, Freebies, History, Live Poetry, and It's FREE!!! at Ringer Park Allston, 12-6PM Bands: Pink Navel, Tiny Deserts, Alexander, Really Great, Puppy Problems and Kind Being. For all us O Positive fans!! Dave Herlihy, lead vocalist and principal songwriter for the legendary Boston band, came up with more than forty songs during the pandemic…and then he got busy with his friends in the studio. Lunch Records will release Dave’s 5 song EP, Postcards From Kindergarten (Volume 1) this summer. Friday, September 16 Dave will be at the Burren doing a solo set from Dave, and a finale with a full band. We're warning you now...get your tickets: September 8, 2022 (Thursday) GUTTERMOUTH, The F.U.'s, Wimpy Rutherford of The Queers, Baabes - FB page. Appropriately, because of their legacy - The F.U.'s are at some pretty excellent "fests" - SkullFest 12 in Pittsburgh, PA August 18-21 - They are on Friday Aug 19 along with The Adolescents, Delco MF's, No Time, Silence, Hajj. And .. Rebellion Festival 2023 in Blackpool (UK), August 2-6, 2023 along with (so far) The Only Ones, The Dickies, Bad Manners, HR-Bad brains, DRI, FU’s, Toxic Reasons. The Midway got some attention from Vanyaland. It’s nice to see them get appreciated. They talk about Heather Timmons who used to do the sound but now does the booking with her TinyOak Bookings. She was also responsible for keeping those live feed concerts going during Covid. She is a marvel!! The article in Vanyaland
Forced Exposure is releasing the Dredd Foole & the Din album Songs in Heat 1982. It's early recording by Dredd Foole (Dan Ireton) with Mission of Burma as his band. That should get the fans motivated. It includes the a single released back in the day which has “So Tough.” Listen to that on YouTube and you can hear the MOB sounding a lot like The Velvet Underground. Other cuts are a cover of “Sister Ray,” “When I Was Young” by Eric Burden and “Final Solution” by Pere Ubu. The rest of it is a Channel gig from 8/9/1982. More on the release, some samples of the songs, and preordering (release date is 8/5/22) at the Forced Exposure website VIDEOS...... Motel Black has a video of their song "Humor Balance" from their album of the same name. It’s been a while since we had a real moody band like this. The video casts a spell by mainly being just black and red. The video and the album are something to dig into when you are in a contemplative mood. The Damned just came out with a movie/album titled A Night of a Thousand Vampires. It's the 2019 show at the Palladium Theater celebrating their 40th Anniversary and the departure of long time drummer Pinch. Everybody, band and audience, are in vampire gear. Dave Vanian finally gets his wish as he goes from Dracula to Nosferatu. It’s all very theatrical with fire-eaters and trapeze artists. The trailer shows a lot of that. The list of songs in the film can be seen on the Horror Cult Films site. The list of songs in the album can be seen at Amazon Charles Hansen gets to talk about his amazing double album Pop ‘n’ Rock Music ’22 on a zoom interview by Power Popaholic. They ask – will he play the whole thing live? It looks like no, but we think it will happen someday. Flight Attendant from Nashville (the drummer is a Bostonian) has a combination of disparate influences; they say they are a Psychedelic Space Rock Band. The video for “Crybaby” starts off with low volume but the creepiness is there from the first image. That creepiness continues and the volume goes up at the one minute mark. It’s very over the top and campy…in an enjoyable way. You got to admire the way the singer delivers the lyrics. The song is an earworm if you listen a few times. Flight Attendant will have a full length album out September 30. RADIO......
Ron’s Late Risers Show this Monday 8/1 10am on WMBR 88.1 FM will include a live set by Cheater Slicks from a Pipeline broadcast of 1992. Tim Kelly, one of our fave LRC DJ’s from a few years back has been doing some fill in shows. The one from last Tuesday included a set in memory of Tom Lane. Tim’s got some choice older songs and he always has the ear for new songs like The Helicopters “I Ain’t No Miracle Worker”, Mickey Erg’s “Almost Like Judy Sill” among others. To hear the shows go to the WMBR archive page and click the appropriate day. PODCASTS......... This week Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico talks to Brad Hallen who is now playing with The Nervous Eaters. Brad has been playing in bands since the sixties. He answered an ad in the Phoenix and became the bass player for Pastiche! He moved on to Primary Colors, Adventure Set, Ministry, The Outlets, The Buddy System and The Joneses. He also played with the Eaters in the 80s. He’s recorded with Iggy Pop, Elliot Easton, and Aimee Mann among others. There’s so much more too. What an interesting career Brad has had.
NEW MUSIC/CDs...... dropbear is a new Boston group for us. They have a new album out called Spiralized. They describe themselves as "nugaze." To us they don’t sound like anyone else playing around town. It’s a heavy noisy group sound. It really delivers on a song like “Not the First, Never the Last”. There’s a lot of power in that song. The lyrics are so general; it’s hard to know exactly what they are singing about.
Salem Wolves released a recording of their live show at Once at Boynton Yards done a year ago (7/31/21). Live at Once has 9 cuts. The group is solid and all the songs are hard driving. There’s a lot of songs we like off this: “Titanium”, “Turn to Gold”, “Hostile Music” and “Never Die”. “Titanium” has a slow beginning and the line, “I’ve had a nose bleed for days” that sticks in our head. We’re going to leave you with “Turn to Gold” because it’s got so much power and energy and we love that short repetitive bass riff at the beginning. All proceeds from the sale of this album goes toward the National Network of Abortion Funds. Bandcamp page: https://salemwolves.bandcamp.com/
