Vintage Crop from Australia played their first set in America at the Lily Pad. That was a long way to go to such a small space but that could also be a legendary date to catch…you were there! In this case Joanie Lindstrom was there. Al Quint was the DJ for the night and locals Landowner were the opening act. CLICK HERE for a few photos, a video and a short review of the gig from Joanie. The Nervous Eaters show at the Middle East on Tuesday 9/28 with The Dead Boys and The Plimsouls has been moved to Sonia from the ME Up. Looks like that opened up some more tickets. Here's the Middle East Ticket Page. You might still get in. We had the British TV series Pistol based on Steve Jones’ book Lonely Boy. Now we have I Was A Teenage Sex Pistol., a film on based on Glen Matlock’s book. There's more detail and recall in Matlock’s book than Jones’ more personal and sensational take. For instance you learn more about the goings on of the McLaren/Westwood’s SEX store in Matlock’s book. The film will be a documentary with interviews. The men in charge according to the Hollywood reporter: “I Was a Teenage Sex Pistol will be directed by Andre Relis (Randy Rhoads: Reflections of a Guitar Icon, NWA & Eazy-E:Kings of Compton) and Nick Mead (Clarence Clemons: Who Do I Think I Am?). The film will be produced by Matlock, Jessica Bennett (Darkness of Man, The Price We Pay) and Nick Mead, with Stephen Nemeth (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, Dogtown and Z-Boys) serving as executive producer.” Article in the Hollywood Reporter website
The Dogmatics have had some issues with Brown Paper Tickets company, mainly non-payment. In fact they owe the Dogs $4605.00!! It looks the company has a history going back a few years. There have been complaints to the Better Business Bureau. We mention it here to caution any band to check them out before they use them.

We’ve been posting a lot on Geoff Palmer lately because his album is on the verge of release. Geoff not only plays rocking good pop punk he also has good taste in spotting others doing it. Geoff's "2023 – Best of (so far) Spotify list" is 170 songs long!! He’s included a few of his own songs and his mates Kurt Baker and Brad Marino. There are a few other recognizable bands but most are new discoveries for us.
Then there is the 40 song list that Spotify calls "This is Geoff Palmer." These are songs that encompass all of Geoff’s releases.
Brad Marino's (also Connection) new track "Grin and Bear It" is now on the New Noise website. It has a stomping commanding beat aznd we love the guitar work. His album (as in actual vinyl!) of the same name is out on November 3 from Sioux Records. The CD will be available from Rum Bar.
There always seems to be questions about what Pixies songs are about. The American Songwriter website offers an explanation of “Where Is My Mind”. Black Francis says, “The song is about a high-school trip to the Bahamas. I was swimming in clear water and there was a small fish – about four inches, not dangerous at all – that was aggressively following me and poking me,” he explained to The Guardian in 2020. “It kept doing it – it freaked me out. I was like, ‘I have to get away from this fucking crazy fish." .... Gee, that seems so deflating. The title of the song and the atmosphere of the song seem to indicate some existential doubt going on. We still think it does, even if prodded by a fish. VIDEOS...... The Dandy Warhols debuted a new video/song on Brooklyn Vegan. “Summer of Hate” is their “homage to the sounds of The Damned, The MC5, and probably a bit of the Stooges in there as well.” We think you can hear all that in there too. It’s fuzzy, garage-y and a little cheesy. They admit the visuals were controlled by AI. You can see that right off. It looks very different. Das Damen are reissuing their 1986 album Keeps Me Wild. As part of that, they retrieved some unfinished songs and had guest singers in to complete them. One of those singers is Thalia Zedek. Boy, what a powerful performance she does on “How Do You Measure.” She’s a wonder!! There aren’t many singers that could pull this off. The video itself is a bit vertiginous. We stopped looking and just listened to it. Here’s a little about the reissue on the NYS Music And some more on The Vinyl District Go Betty Go are a Southern California punk band that started in 2000. They made their name on a few Warped tours and then had a few stops and starts. Now their new album Black and Blue coming out in 2024 on Wiretap Records. This video for the first single off the album, “Keep Up”, it’s a good way to see what they do. The guitars are thick and distorted the vocals are clear as a bell. That’s a nice combo. A mention of a song titled “The Rat” in the London Review of Books caught our attention. It's a song by the NYC group The Walkmen who were part of the New York scene that has received attention because of the book Meet Me In The Bathroom (which later became a documentary of the same name). But the song is not about our beloved Boston club. The Walkmen were just before that era of The Strokes and the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. “The Rat” doesn’t sound that far from The Strokes doing “Last Night”. The Walkmen bear down with their intensity which makes The Strokes almost seem detached by comparison. It was worth searching out the vid. Here’s another clip of their performance on the David Letterman show to hear more RADIO......
Our ears perked right up when we heard DMZ's “Ball Me Out” on Ron’s Monday Late Risers Show. It wasn’t DMZ!, it was a cover by the French group NC Five. It is rough, but it should be rough to be real.
Speaking of covers Ron then played a cover of Devo’s “Girl You Want” by UK group Get the Fuck Outta Dodge. They have a whole album of covers called These Songs Aren’t Ours Either. They pick from a wide range of very roughly done covers like “Kids in America” and “Ever Fallen in Love”.
We liked this song “Pink Bikini” by the Drama Dolls
from LA. It’s on You
Tube. To hear Ron’s Monday LRC show go to the WMBR archive page, hit the LRC show for Monday 9/18. PODCASTS......... This week The Jacklights were interviewed on Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico. Nilagia McCoy grew up in San Diego and heard a lot of skate punk growing up. Drummer Mike Gaylord is from Newbury, VT. His early influences were Nirvana and Tool then ska and So Cal punk. Bassist Mike Allen is from Upton, MA. He was in bands from early teenage years. Mike also plays with the Instamatics. The Jacklights are Nilagia ’s first band. Before that she only played solo. She found her bandmates on Craigslist in 2019, just before Covid. She was impressed with Justine Covault’s Whistle Stop shows and felt the band would fit in on Red on Red and submitted their music. They talk a lot about the upcoming EP Final Girl (out October 3. See Bandcamp), the title song “Final Girl” and the video for the song. This is a good way to get up to speed with the group who is getting a bigger presence on the scene all the time.
Steev also logs a session with Corey Loog Brennan of Bullet LaVolta and The Lemonheads. Corey has many interesting stories starting right of the bat with stories about his home town of Scranton, PA. He was into punk from 1977. He lived in London in 79 and 80 and saw tons of live punk then. We love that he lauded a 999 show in Philadelphia that he rates as an all-time best. Corey is also a professor which has involved travel so his stories involve playing in bands, seeing live bands and teaching. He was also a DJ at the Record Hospital on WHRB. What hasn’t this guy done? The show is an hour and a half and the stories never stop.
It’s about a year old but It’s Another Sunday Podcast has well done interview with Liz Borden. There is some Rat stories which we always like to hear. Some stories of unfair treatment to female bands that The Axes had to endure. There was some new news for us. We didn’t know that Liz has written some books. If you go to Amazon you'll see she has four books: My Life in Poetry & Short Stories (Volumes 1 and 2), Photos from the Road of Life Series #1 and The Facts & Importance Of Bees, Bugs & Butterflies for Kids. As Liz says in the interview, she’s always keeping busy. That’s why she started acting because that is something she could do on her own without a group.
Here’s your weekly hit of Glam from the Elastic Glam Breakfast Show. New faves this week was “Boogie Star” from Velvet Insane, “Rockstar” from The Struts and an older one, “Motor of Love” by an Australian group Sherbert.
NEW MUSIC/CDs...... This band, “…transcend mortal constraints to traverse the cosmic tapestry. They are the embodiment of sonic divinity, revered as the Gods of Rock who defy the limitations of time and space.” That’s how Bang Camaro defines themselves. We think no stage is big enough for them…because there are so many of them. Their new album is Bang Camero III. Two previously released singles start the album, “We Know You Know" and “Too Fast To Fall In Love”. The music is hair metal coupled with fantasy. You know what you’re getting with Bang Camero and it’s fun. It all comes together in “Never Stop the Rock” where they build up to a frenzy as they pledge “We’ll never stop the rock”.
The Tearaways have Blondie’s drummer Clem Burke which makes them notable right there. They had a few singles and vids out, now it’s the whole album; And Now For Our Next Trick on Dirty Water Records. This is some Power Pop old school style. The singing is one of the major pluses. It’s so full and saturated sounding. “Are You Effing Kidding Me” is getting attention – great title. “Charlie, Keith and Ringo” has a notable video featuring Clem who gets a chance to show off a bit. Here’s the video on YouTube Our pick to click is “No Love Lost.” Some songs just get to us and this is one. It's Pop with full vocals, power chords and some 12 strings ringing out – sold! We played and replayed this to death. That’s why we have it on our Top Ten Songs
Australian punks The Square Tugs have a new tune “One Minute Love Song.” As advertised it’s one minute long (short). But it only takes a second to visualize the instant mosh pit for this song when done live. Way to go guys!! It’s on our Top Ten Songs
From the Roslindale area: Double Star are a poppy ska. They're a little quirky and that endears them to us. Their latest is “I Know U Say.” The vocals are so well done and that nasal guitar tone!
We were in the mood for this. It’s Bulldoze on the album The Final Beatdown on Triple B Records. The song “Nothing But a Beatdown” is sludgy hardcore. Nuff’ said. It’s on our Top Ten Songs
We spotlighted The Young Rochelles before with their song “I Never Saw the Ramones” - done in Ramones style of course. They have a new song out now, “Breezy” as the title would suggest, is less punk than that last song we posted. This is light and sweet and poppy. Their new album is Kicked to the Curb.
