Prime Movers
Prime Movers at the Burren

The Prime Movers reunion gig at The Burren was a huge hit!! John Keegan was there to take it in and write it up. He has one of his slide shows to give you the whole sweep of the action. The Prime Movers get you as close to the real experience of sixties garage as you can get.

We didn’t think there was an end to the phenomenon of The Mess-Around. But time proves otherwise....

They say: “Yes, sad to say we will be ending our '3rd Sunday Afternoon of the month' residency in December. We have 3 to go and killer guests for each show. Join us Sunday Oct 20th, Sun Nov 17th and Sunday Dec 15th for our last three Messes. Details to follow but we will go out in our own unique Messy style.” Facebook page

The Messes have such a dedicated following....what will take its place??

Something in the Way FestSomething in the Way Fest is coming to Roadrunner on February 1 and 2. There are 24 bands using two stages so the sets never stop. The Run for Cover record label started in Brighton in 2010. They feature young bands from all over the world. Vanyaland and Brooklyn Vegan have the story.

Facebook page for Roadrunner FB page, and You can "join" the FB group for the event as well.

The International Pop Overthrow is in town this year again. It's at the Square Root from October 30 to November 2. That’s four days with 21 bands. In there are: Hummingbird Syndicate, Corin Ashley, Speedfossil, Cold Expectations, Fezztones, Sal Baglio, Kelly Knapp, Girl With a Hawk and many more. For more info and links scroll way down to the Gig Listings.

VIDEOS......

We like the simple message of Night Court’s new song/video for “Captain Caveperson.” Everything is screwed up but rather than complain “fix something today.” As example they give you the caveman who, if he doesn’t do anything else, will clean up the cave a bit, or invent the wheel, or paint a bull on the wall.

Night Court, who are from Vancouver, keep it brief at less than two minutes. It’s punk and catchy. The singer’s voice is made for punk, where else would that tone sound right?

We're staying with short and sweet here. This vid is 54 seconds long! The group is The Dumpies the song/vid is “00:00” (or zero zero, double zero, as the band sings it). The song bounces along as the video seems to run its introduction credits but when the credits end, the song does. The video is a homage to The Adventures of Pete & Pete TV show which began with short minute clips.

The Dumpies are originally from Austin, TX and are now in Oregon. A 19 cut album will be out soon on Dirt Cult Records

The long running Dictators have a new album and a video for the song “Thank You and Have a Nice Day”. The Dictators still sound like the Dictators and their New York attitude is undiminished these 50 years later. They still have two original members Andy Shernoff and Ross Freidman. Dick Manitoba played Sammy’s Patio in December of 2023.

RADIO......

Skybar was drunk with joy as his show went from one hour to two this last week. He’s now on from 7 to 9pm on the same day Tuesday on WMFO 91.5FM. To celebrate he played all local music both old (Neighborhoods, Outlets, Face to Face) and new (Daylillies, Already Dead, Linnea’s Garden).

The Rising show is on WMFO 91.5 FM on Tuesdays at 8pm. After that go to the WMFO schedule page Hit the Rising show on 8pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

PODCASTS.........

Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico had two podcasts posted this week. One was a short show that was Steev’s review of the Rat Reunion show at the Bellforge Arts Center last week.

The other show had guests drummer Jesse Mayer (Diablogato) and Tom Wilson stage manager of many high profile acts. They talk about some topics like Dickie Barret, what lyrics can say today compared to when punk started and musicians advocating political candidates.

Jesse revealed that Diablogato will have Snake Oil Salvation, a six song EP on Rum Bar, in November. We also hear Tom Wilson relating some crazy things going on during band tours.

Elastic Glam After the T Rex (“Ride the White Swan” live) opener Sethyspice played a Giuda cut to begin the Elastic Glam show this week. We’ve seen Giuda a few times with Unnatural Axe. Sethyspice played a new release “It’s Not About the Money.” Then it was a song by Bobbie Dazzle another new glam artist that we like. We are always impressed with the hard rockin’ Slady and the song this week “Dig Me” was another notch in the belt for them. There was plenty more new glam with Palaye Royale, Starbenders, KillerStar and Chappell Roan.

On Sonic Overload, Al Quint played a set of four Buzzcocks songs to celebrate the 45th anniversary of the album Singles Going Steady. Those songs are still amazing and bring back the era.

Sonic OverloadTo give you a hit of hardcore, we’ll embed a song by Bloodkrow Butcher, a local Chelmsford band doing “Anti-War.” They were together from 2009 to 2014. Bloodkrow Butcher on Bandcamp and on Metal Music Archives

“Anti-War” began a powerful hardcore set. We'll give you the two following songs to give you a taste ... Innuendo doing “Never Going Back” and Vaxine with “Presence of Oppression”. We have that embedded below.

Al’s Last set was classic punk: Flipper – “Sex Bomb”, Gun Club – “Sex Beat”, Blasters – “So Long Baby Goodbye” and X – “White Girl”.

We were listening to the podcast called The Ledge because they were right on the new Dogmatics “Library Girl” release and played it as their first song. They are big Rum Bar fans and this episode played Hotbox, Laissez Fairs, Junior Varsity, Cheep Cassettes and Joe Jennings new releases.

One song that stuck out was New Jersey’s The Weeklings doing Neil Young “Mr Soul” mashed up with “Satisfaction” by the Stones and it was sung by Peter Noone of the Herman Hermits. Pretty wild and makes sense musically.

Here’s an article on the song and group. Mr. Soul you can hear on YouTube

The rest of the podcast is all new quality releases. You can listen at The Ledge

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

2024 Rumble winners, The Ghouls, have released a new song. This is only the second song they've released. These guys are not rushing into anything! Afraid it might be a letdown? No way. As a matter of fact there’s a lot packed into this 2:38 minute song. It has lots of rhythm changes and loud/soft dynamic change ups. At the center of it all is a four chord punk progression which they bash out with punk abandon. The main temp is fast and frantic.

It’s going to be a pleasure to hear their other new songs come out.

We wish Tiger Bomb were a Boston band but they are close enough in Portland, ME to be on local bills frequently and Geno’s is a fave short road trip.

They have a new digital single out. “Ready to Go” is primo Tiger Bomb. It’s got the garage sound the band owns and then those vocals. That’s what makes this so cool. The lead singing is so sweet and has so much character. The background vocals are boss. They slot in a beefy solo in the middle and end to seal the deal. Ready To Go on Bandcamp

Bob Cenci of Jerry’s Kids will just not be stereotyped! He’s been taken stylistic chances for a while now. U-ey at the Buoy doing blues songs is the example. This new effort is under the name Bob Cenci’s Orange Guitar and the song is “My Guitar is So Cool”. Bob is singing praise for his acoustic orange guitar. Even though the song starts with some acoustic the arrangement soon enough brings in some electric and then multi tracks them.

The arrangement and recording is very detailed and well done. It has a wonderful overall sound that matches the spirit in Bob’s voice. He LOVES that guitar!

Right now it is available as a dollar download on Bandcamp so get over there and check it out!!

The Cretins have a split EP with The Rip Taylors from Nashville.

The Cretins side is “Beach” and “Song.”“Beach” is a Ramones type song but the switch here is that it’s not a ‘beach’ song per se. It is actually an anti-beach song. The singer doesn’t want to go to the beach and doesn’t understand why the girlfriend keeps asking. Punks just get sunburn on the beach anyway, isn’t that true?

“Song” is a melodious pop punk effort that The Cretins do so well.

The Rip Taylors must be wonderful to be around. “I’m a Fucking Delight” they claim. It seems they hear that a lot. The song is a short pop punk hit and that’s fucking delightful. We have the song on our Top Ten Songs

In “I’m Not the One” the singer tells the girlfriend he’s no hero and he’s not ‘The One’ for her and guess what? She’s not ‘The One’ for him. We don’t care as the pop punker pumps along. The Rip Taylors are like The Cretins, they just have the knack for these funny upbeat shots of punk.

The Man-eaters out of Chicago give a full throttle rock out with “Creepy Crawl.” The sound is punk/hardcore with some traditional rock in the mix. We’ll be interested in hearing the rest of their album Quatro Muchachos to hear other songs like this.

In their write up on Bandcamp they stopped us short with this: “Bringing to mind the best elements of “Hot Steel and Acid” era Nervous Eaters” but that was part of joking about groups with Eater in the title like Flesh Eaters and Eater.

Finnish band The 69 Eyes has teamed up with Cheetah Chrome for a new version of “Sonic Reducer”!! It’s coming out on Cleopatra on November 1st and it sounds massive!

Here’s an article on the Cleopatra website about it. You can preoder on various site like Amazon and even Target but on Cleopatra Records site you get 10% off...and its on RED vinyl. And here it is on YouTube
