The Schitzophonics
Schizophonics at the Middle East

It's great when a band gets a ‘buzz.’ When a band gets the attention of everyone at the same time and people want to see and hear them. If they're an out-of-town band and they get a show scheduled then people are talking about and dying to go.

That’s what happened with the The Schizophonics this last week when they played the Middle East. Front man Pat Beers is the man everyone wants to see. He did not disappoint in Boston.

Hit the photo link below to see John Keegan’s photos and write up of the gig. Check out The Schizophonics web page Schizophonics Facebook page

John was also at The Dictators show at Askew in Providence a week ago. There's no Handsome Dick Manatoba but John checks out how there doing. Locals Little Billy Lost and The McGunks were on the bill. Click the photo link below to see the review.

Mach Bell announced on social media that he was having open heart surgery this week ... a quintuple bypass!!! Yup, Mach does everything big! We are all nervous for him. Open heart surgery has a long recovery time.

Mach Bell

The first post op message was from Friday: “Hey! I’m not eating yet , still in ICU following quintuple bypass heart surgery. Internet service had been sketchy these past couple days but i got to see a bunch of your nice messages come thru. Thank you! They gave me a nausea patch so I’m feeling better but unable to clear my throat or breathe deeply. “

Then Sunday another update “Mach is steadily making progress in his recovery.

Julia said Mach has a great team working with him at Beth Israel. "He still does not have a great appetite but time will change that. Keep the good vibes coming for Mach!!”

Nervous EatersAnother week, more Nervous Eaters news. The song “Chad” off the Monsters & Angeles album was the Coolest Song in the World this week. You can hear the show here

The Eaters have another show lined up with Barrence Whitfield and the Savages at the Regent Theatre in Arlington on Dec 16. Facebook event page

There’s a new Tree album on the way! It seems the group was at Galaxy Park Studios and indeed are making another album. They had Chris Doherty from Gang Green in for some vocals. Chris seems to be everywhere these days.

Shang Hi LosThe Shang Hi Los have a new single coming out on Dec 3; “Aces, Eights & Heartbreaks.” It comes with a video. The video was done with Joan Hathaway, who did the last Cold Expectations vid. Shang Hi Los Facebook page

Cold Expectations had a short interview on the Flex Music Blog. One question describes the band as “fresh, yet vintage”. We think that is an excellent assessment. The elements of the group's music are familiar but the result of the mixing of sounds seems very new.

Read it on the Flex Music Blog website

We were glad to see that one of our favorite musicians Artie Sneiderman (ex of Crybabies) has formed a new group called Swamp Roots that debuted at the Steel & Wire in Worcester last Friday. He is too talented to be out of action.

Monster Mike's Guitar store was closed this last week for the filming of a movie called Any Day Now. That’s a great setting for the appropriate movie!! Hey, I hope they put Hambone Skinny on the soundtrack, it’s only right! Monster Mike’s Guitars Facebook page

Beautiful was the FightBeautiful Was the Fight is a documentary focused on women and other marginalized voices in the Boston music scene. It's produced by David Habeeb

The film had a premier showing at the Landmark Kendall Theatre. There are loads of and bands in the film including: Sapling, Stormstrees, JJ Gonson, Carissa Johnson. Nicole Tammaro has some photos in the film. Habeeb's Facebook page

Here’s an odd one, a musical theater production about the group Pavement. Seems unlikely (and there’s choreography too), it's directed by director Alex Ross Perry. They state: “The majesty and mystery of Pavement, one of rock music’s most unique treasures, brought to life on the stage for an abbreviated, unforgettable stand.” There will two performances of Slanted! Enchanted! A Pavement Musical. That title is so perfect. It’s Dec 1 and 2 at the Bleeker Street’s Sheen Center. Read more here.

VIDEOS............

We got this video from Brian Goslow. It’s a half hour early punk show from 1977 called Impact. It starts with the Damned doing “Neat, Neat, Neat” “Problem Child” and “Fan Club”. That’s followed by the Rich Kids, Generation X and The Adverts. Classic stuff.

I Will EMBED

RADIO......

Already Dead LPWe were glad to hear the Already Dead interview on Skybar’s Rising show.

We featured their video for “Stability” last August Their 7 song EP is called My Collar Is Blue. That's also a song and a video which is here.

“Hypocrite” is a fast 1:20 hardcore song. We like that a lot and we have it on our Top Ten Songs
“Bruises and Bottles” is another strong hardcore number. They played “Stability” acoustically in the studio.

To hear the Rising show go to the WMFO schedule page and hit the Rising show at 8pm on Tuesday, then hit the ‘archive’ button.

PODCASTS.........

Podcast Stuggling ArtistThe Struggling Artist Podcast took on Baabes this week. The band tags a few hardcore groups as their influences. We expected a garage band or two but they didn’t mention any.

Baabes' live shows can be exciting, maybe too exciting for club owners. One club owner in Worcester said they would never play that town again! It was like a bad movie.

Trev is obviously a big fan of the group. It seems to us that even though Baabes played a lot before the Covid shutdown, it’s been the shows they've done after (and the album) that have gained them the fans and rave reviews they deserve.

The Rat Tales podcast has Jon Macey in for an interview. Jon has a long history. A version of Fox Pass played the last Cambridge Common concerts. This is a good chance to hear what Rat Teles podcast the thinking was and what influences were around when the early bands that made up the Boston scene started out. Fox Pass existed years before punk started. The Velvet Underground and Jonathan Richman were the models. Jon was recording from the start. It’s great hearing “Laura” which is so much like Lou Reed.

Jon gives a picture of the clubs that existed just before punk started and that’s enlightening. There was a good scene set up then.

Fox Pass were very popular in the early punk days. At the Rat Talking Heads and Mink DeVille opened for Fox Pass.

He tells the story of how he created the Boston Groupie News, always a great tale, and the reception it got. HA! Yup, Jon did the very first and very mysterious BGN!!

He outlines his bad drug days in NYC. That’s was a scary period, but he did come out of it. This was a very frank discussion.

NEW MUSIC/CDs......

The Beatersband from Italy are back with another album of punked up 50s and 60s rock hits. It makes you see how some of those hits had simple chord structures that make them line up with later punk sensibilities. They cover “Burning Love”, “Be My Baby”, “C’mon Everybody”, “Wild Thing”, “I Only Want To Be With You” and “When You Walk In The Room”.
