Sad sad news ...Michele Haber, lead guitarist for The Bristols has passed away. Michele came to Boston from New York to go to Emerson College. She quickly made deep friendships and formed The Bristols who played around Boston and beyond in the early 80's. Everyone has missed Michele since she moved to California in 2015 but she remained close to her Boston music community and friends ... oh, and friends...Michele had so many ...she was deeply loved and was a truly sweet, friendly, down to earth person as well as an awesome guitarist. So many are heartbroken over the loss of Michele, but she will live on in everyone's heart and in her music. RIP Michele! Michele worked with a number of animal rescue organaizations out in California, to donate in Michele’s honor go to Tragic to Magic Dog Rescue - San Diego, or Rancho Coastal Humane Society or to the Musella Foundation, the organization that provided care for her while she struggled with a brain tumor Here is a video of The Bristols playing the Viva La Eva benefit in 2016. and at the TT's Farewell show John Keegan was at the Midway on Saturday 8/12 to catch a wild show. No one does metal like the Humanoids do and they don't gig often these days. They were in fine form this day. The Electric Street Queens followed and were even more outrageous. The photos tell a story themselves. Then it was psych out time with Dyr Faser. To read about it and see the photos, hit the photo link below.
And clear your calendars for Friday, October 6th because that's the date of the "Night for Justine, A Tribute Concert" for the much missed Justine Covault, at the Crystal Ballroom in Somerville. Facebook event page Performing: The Bags, Baker and the Double Down, The Croaks, The Black Threads, Quest for Tuna, David Minehan & the Pelvic Trust and the Unclean will play with friends. Tickets are available at the Somerville Theatre and Crystal Ballroom box office with no fees or online via Ticketmaster. The Crystal Ballroom will be a nice backdrop for this perfect line up.
Pavement drummer Gary Young died this week. He was the group’s first drummer from the 80s to 1992. He was an essential part in the whole idea of the lo-fi esthetic. Gary was also subject of the film Louder Than You Think. The description of Gary’s mindset in film blurb is revealing: “Gary teeters the thin line between free-form self-expression and chaotic self-destruction.” You can read Pavement's tribute on Brooklyn Vegan They said he was, “… a fearless fireball. His enthusiasm for playing live music was relentless and unrepentant.”
Photographer Steve Latham has been shooting local bands along with national acts in Boston clubs since the early 90s. You can spend time looking at his photos and videos on his site Steve Latham.net It’s all set up to easily peruse from his main page. He's got The Neighborhoods, The Bristols, Sex Pistols, Bow Wow Wow, The Dents, Downbeat 5, The Young Snakes, Dogmatics...the list goes on and on....so check it out. And you can buy prints if it moves you.....
The Last Ones have a very limited edition vinyl 45 posted on Bandcamp. We are told it's two classic songs “originally recorded in 1982. Taken from the original 8 track master tapes and remastered in San Francisco at Hyde Street Studios.” Which songs?? we assume “Number One Again” is one of them. There is no contact info or way to buy it on the page. So, um, we're waiting on more info.....but check it out here. The Acadian Sun Recorders Facebook page states that only 75 will be available!
Dave Tree will be on The New York Hardcore Chronicles with Drew Stone on August 20. The combo of Dave and Drew should be volcanic! Here’s the Facebook event page and the New York Hardcore Chronicles Joanie Lindstrom heads over to Spain and visits the gorgeous cities of Madrid, Seville and Granada. There is the classic Alhambra but also some record stores along the way and nights with the Stranglers and the Fleshtones. Not to mention plenty of food and drink photos. All on Joanie Lindstrom's Madrid/Granada/Seville Vacation - Click Here. VIDEOS...... The Rat Tales podcast got Fred Pineau (Atlantics, Little Billy Lost) into the studio for an interview. Like a lot of musicians Fred got the bug with the Beatles. As punk began Fred was playing with the Count in Astral Projections and then his own band Bonjour Aviators who went to play in NYC at CBGB’s and opened for Talking Heads and Television. The band also played one of the first gigs at the Rat after Jimmy Harold took over. Fred tells the story of joining The Atlantics. Soon the Atlantics has a record contract and the good times had come. Fred has stories of recording the album and touring with Roxy Music. All the Atlantics talk is timely as the band is being inducted into the New England Music Hall of Fame this year. Fred has been a few bands: there was Third Person, which we never heard of, they opened for the Tubes at the Channel. He was in a band called the Syphlloids that opened for Rancid, he was also in the Kenmores who covered punk hits, then the band Five Point which had Mark Kennedy on vocals. The interview is two and half hours and it takes that long to get the whole Fred Pineau story. The last year or two has put Code 213 Records on our radar coz of bands they've signed like Key of Caustic, Lix Borden, Smitt E. Smitty & the Fezztones and Little Billy Lost. Now they have a video channel on YouTube. They call it IMTV – Indie Music TV. They have videos of bands on and off the label. They initialized the series with “Rebel Rebel” by the Fezztones. Looking through the channel’s 40 posted videos we noted this vid by Tommy Ray and the song “No No No No”. Tommy has a bit of a Johnny Thunders look – he’s got style. The song is a messed up pop rock. We love it. The video is above left. Now what if you took the urgency and rock out of a Ramones song and slow it way down? We get the answer from Weird Nightmare with their vid/song “She’s The One”. You may hate it or love it. Video is above right. They have Knee Hi’s doing some glam with “Action!” They also have more locals in there like Nervous Eaters, Cold Expectations, The Chelsea Curve, Diablogato and J Prozac. RADIO..... Brian Young on A Crash Course for the Ravers show had Ray Paul on as a guest. Ray, originally from Rochester, NY, has been in the Boston area in 1976. He was playing power pop as punk was ascending. He got lots of airplay with “Lady, Be Mine Tonight” and “How Do You Know.” He played the local clubs. At some point he moved back to the Rochester area. He’s been in town for one or two International Pop Overthrows and was playing The Square Root on Saturday 8/19. It felt like a homecoming to have him on Boston radio again. Brian played a generous nine songs including his new one “Hold Tight.” Ray Paul website and his Ray Paul Facebook page
Brian also played an early song, “I Need a Cigarette” from Greg Allen’s Fringe Religion’s next album out in the Fall. To listen to that show go to the WMFO Schedule page and the Crash Course for the Ravers show at 1pm Saturday then hit the archive button. PODCASTS......... Blowing Smoke with Twisted Rico has Juliana Hatfield (Blake Babies/Lemonheads) in for an interview. Juliana latest album will be an ELO cover album (previous cover album were Police and Olivia Newton John). The first music Juliana heard were her parents playing piano; both Scott Joplin and Bach. Her early rock was main stream on the AM radio band in the seventies. She got a guitar when she was 10 years old. She met the members of Blake Babies at Berkeley and soon after met the Lemonheads and started to contribute to that group. Steev and Julian discuss the many local musicians and also talked about the Olivia Newton John and Police albums.
The Dogmatics: A Dogumentary film is still going the rounds of film festivals. It recently won ‘Audience Choice Best of Festival award’ at the Manchester, NH film festival. This week the film was reviewed on The UK Film Club, a film podcast from England. It’s a 45 minute podcast and they talk about the Dogmatics documentary at the beginning. It’s a real treat to hear them not only review the film from a completely objective point of view but to hear it done with British accents. They loved the whole vibe of the film and the group. They make the point that the tone of the film matches the feeling of the band. We love the idea of this film getting shown overseas. After that the next step probably will be to get it on the streaming platforms. And as a reminder ----THIS Saturday August 26, 2023 WRPS Rocks - Scholarship Fundraiser: A Dogumentary & The Dogmatics at Rockland High School Auditorium - Doors at 6 pm, Movie at 7 pm (90 min), followed by The Dogmatics- Facebook page Buy tickets here!!
Here’s this week’s Elastic Glam Breakfast Show. They always start with a T Rex song. This week it’s a live cut of “Baby Strange.” A new fave this week is “Cosmic Lover” by The Foreign Films. Elastic Glam also supports the Trevor Project. They give help and resources to the LGBTQ community.
NEW MUSIC/CDs...... It’s been two years since the last new material from Dutch Tulips. Their album Double Vision came out in April 2021. We know from that album that they write very intriguing songs. The lyrics can be oblique but seem to have meaning in them. That’s the way this new song “Gold Chains” goes. The meaning of ‘gold chains’ is hard to nail down. They appear to be a positive trait is this song. Like the chains that bind friends. It’s fun to get in there and try to parse it out. The playing is subtle and everything is in its exact place. The rhythm section is tight and the song is always forward moving. It’s a very wordy song and those lyrics flow easy with the singing just urgent enough to make you want to understand what they are trying to convey.
Kooked Out are a duo from Stoneham, MA that started in 2013. The group sound is bright and punchy with raw edges. It’s hard to nail down some of the influences but the songwriting and playing are both quality work and make this a good listen. They do have surf influences that go full blown on the instrumental “Bugger
Off” and on classics like “Penetration” and “Apache.”
They manage to put energy and sharp playing in those well-worn covers to perk
them up anew – no small feat. They don’t sound like anyone out there which is in their favor. They are around playing live and sound like they are worth checking out.
